Rachel isn’t a bad actress- but she isn’t a very good one either. She’s only given one memorable performance, Regina in Mean Girls.
Gosling outclassed her in The Notebook, Murphy did the same in Red Eye. The idiotic Family Stone made no one look good. Wedding Crashers? She was the weak link. Not only was everyone else funnier than her, but her character was the reason for the correctly-derided ending. I mean come on! Isla Fisher was hysterical! State of Play was a weaker version of the BBC original, and Rachel just didn’t compare to Kelly Macdonald. As for Married Life, I found myself wishing Emily Blunt had been cast instead.
Rachel has complained in interviews that she’s never sent scripts for the good dramatic roles, and I have to wonder if I’m the only person who thinks that she’s overrated talent-wise. The bathroom scene in Red Eye? Her character is remembering the time she was brutally raped at knife point and Rachel…stamps her foot and pouts? Yikes.
I am incredibly eager to see this film, though I think that my excitement is due to my love for the novel, not the cast or the expectation of a wonderful film. I often find myself looking forward to film adaptations of novels, but just as often find myself dissappointed. Given the way this story has been handled by the screenwriter and the director, I believe the film has the potential to be a good career move for both Bana and McAdams. They each have the potential to be brilliant in this film. It has often been compared to The Notebook and to Benjamin Button. If it is too reminiscent of The Notebook (that puppies, butterflies and ice cream feel), then it will detract from the depth of the story, and the depth of the performances given by the actors. I personally would have liked to see Johnny Depp and Clare Danes. I am eager to see what Bana does with the tortured man that is Henry DeTamble, and if McAdams can portray the woman who brought him hope.
Strangely enough, I actually pictured Claire in the book to be exactly like Rachel McAdams (I read it a good few years before the movie was announced). NOt sure about Eric Bana though. There’s no question of the film living up to the book – NOTHING is better than that book – but I just hope it’s a fair representation and doesn’t ruin any future re-reads. We’ll see…
i’m actually surprised that i don’t really care how many years she takes off. She’s always awesome to me.
Can ‘Time Traveler’s Wife’ reestablish Rachel McAdams as Hollywood’s ‘it’ girl? – Short answer, yes! We love Rachel.
