New 'Glee' promo still preaching to the choir

There's a new Glee promo making the rounds, giving us another peek at what the chorus comedy has in store.

PWHQ is obvs pretty Glee-crazy, so I'll start with the positives: Jane Lynch is still getting A+ one-liners, Jayma Mays will start the fall as my new girl crush, and the show looks like it's creating some long-term conflict between Lynch's character and glee advisor Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison). Concerns: That Election-style culture clash between the jocks and the glee kids? Message received: Jocks are homophobes, glee kids are dorks. One thing I didn't love in the pilot was Jessalyn Gilsig's Terri character — is our hero Mr. Schuester really married to such an offensively vacant nutjob? From the moments we get in this promo, Terri seems as shrill as she was in the pilot.

What do you think, PopWatchers? Does the new promo alleviate lingering concerns?

I had a terrible high school experience — but one thing that never happened was getting made fun of b/c I did both sports and choir/musicals. That’s what I don’t seem to get about these shows. I mean, jocks aren’t the biggest supporters of the performing arts, I’m sure … but if one of their own was doing it, he/she wouldn’t get crap like all these shows (high school musical, glee) seem to portray. Maybe I’m wrong. I mean, guys would probably make fun of other guys, but they wouldn’t corner them and threaten them like what happened in Glee.

OMG!! The new promo is so funny. I loved the pilot episode and cannot wait for the series this fall.

I just had the chance to see the pilot episode of Glee last week and i was instantly hooked. I immediately downloaded the cast’s version of Don’t Stop Believing. I’m making copies of the episode and handing them out to my friends so that they’ll watch the show come this Fall. The shower scene with Finn was insanely homoerotic i thought my head was going to explode(in a good way). The only thing that i didn’t like was that Terri character as this post mentions. She was shrill and annoying. I can’t wait for the Fall !

I never once got made fun of for being in chorus. I never got made fun of for being on the debate team. I never got made fun of for being on the freaking MATH team. Lots of jocks did both band and a sport. I really think someone needs to send a memo to Hollywood.

I don’t get why we’re supposed to be so sympathetic to characters who marry one-note, shallow, bitchy/belligerent spouses. Lots of TV shows (including “Glee”) do this, like that’s going to make us sympathetic to the put-upon one. Mostly it just makes me think that person is an idiot for having chosen such a rotten life partner in the first place.

A.H. — This show must not be based on your life then. Besides…it’s a TV show, not a documentary! And, it’s really great. Relax and enjoy!

This show has potential (and a great cast) but it embraces the high school (and adult) stereotypes just a little too much. Homophobic, philistine jocks? Check. Overachieving, Tracy Flick-like glee club star? Check. Paunchy football coach? Check. Shrill, materialistic wife? Check. One reason ‘Freaks and Geeks’ was so freakin’ fantastic was that it went beyond those stereotypes and showed a nuanced and realistic picture of high school. The musical numbers in this show are great, though.

I can’t watch the promo here at work, but I echo the concerns raised above. I thought the wife was ridiculously b!tchy, and the jocks were (I hope) caricatures.

That Golddigger cover looks like another hit. But I still think this will only be a “Cult favourite” show, hanging on to dear life.

Was the music playing in that clip a Glee-ified version of Slumdog Millionare?!

  • Tim

Um… the show is set in an deliberate exaggerated world – for dramtic effect. In a sense, Glee is several genres rolled into one: part farce, part parable, and parts drama, comedy, and musical. There are plenty of homophobic, philistine joks in the world, or territorial, petty cheerleading coaches. The genius here is that everything is exaggesrated for effect, and it works beautifully. I’m looking forward to a lot more Glee.

  • Liz

I don’t care if it doesn’t portray real life high school, I just know I’m going to have a blast watching this show week after week. I cannot wait for the Fall.

  • Melinda

Mmm…agree that a jock would not be threatened for performing in theater – but he would be mercilessly ridiculed. In HS, they actually are considered two different worlds – for guys, mostly.

It’s a satire people. Say it with me: SATIRE. sat⋅ire  /ˈsætaɪər/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [sat-ahyuhr]
–noun 1. the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.
    2. a literary composition, in verse or prose, in which human folly and vice are held up to scorn, derision, or ridicule.
    3. a literary genre comprising such compositions.
It’s the use of stereotypes as social commentary…if you don’t “get” it, you’re missing out and should probably just watch something else.

For the love of all things harmony, why isn’t it Fall yet?!

“Mr. Shu” can’t kick his wife to the curb soon enough for me. I know they were high school sweethearts, but she seems to have no redeeming qualities. I’m sure the show will drag her “pregnancy” story on and on for way too many episodes, though.

  • AH

I agree that they’re going for silly here. I’m arguing that that specific element of the show is lame. The singing part is awesome. Charlie from Ugly Betty is awesome. The principal and the coach are awesome. Lea Michele is really awesome. Loved the show and downloaded the song 38 seconds after the episode ending. Just noting that one specific element is a Saved By the Bell cliche.
    Chill out.

  • Dee

I am ridiculously excited for this show….

  • Vette

Totally addicted to this show already – and I was SUPER mad after I watched the pilot to know i couldnt watch the next episode until the FALL….cant wait though – it will be great to watch – Characters are great – over the top for sure – but fun!!!

  • J

I didn’t like the wife either, but I thought it was interesting when he talked about her how she’s the same person, but without the joy she used to have – someone whose life never bloomed after high school. If they play it right, it could be cool to explore his mixed up emotions – his idealized version of who she was, the reality of she is now, loyalty to someone even when life didn’t turn out the way he wanted, the desire to be a father. I’m afraid, though, that she’ll have turned out to have had an affair with a co-worker at Sheets and Stuff and the baby won’t be his, opening up the way for him to hook up with the guidance counselor over the the course of a season.

  • MEL31602

    SPOILER ALERT!!!!
Purposely left lots of space so those who don’t want to read this can skip down- but the commercials show that the wife is not really pregnant, but has some kind of fake pregnancy where she seems pregnant but is not- so there will be no baby keeping the two together (at least not yet…)

  • Jason

I love this show already, even with just the little clip of Mr. Schuster singing ‘Golddigger’ the singing is great. The comedy is better, with Jane Lynch’s digs, Jayma Mays hilarity as the timid guidance counselor, even the kids, with Chris Colfer as Kurt, auditioning for kicker, and Cory Monteith’s Finn learning to drive, and Lea Michele as Rachel she is just too perfect for that role. I cannot wait for Glee to reaturn.

  • Gina

AH… you’re fortunate then, because myself and others I know were made fun of for many things, not to mention simply not having any interest in being friends with the “cool” kids.
Anyway, I just want to second what AngieLam said – “It’s a satire. It’s the use of stereotypes as social commentary…”

  • Jay

I am going to repeat. It is satire. They are suppose to caricatures.

  • Juj

    What a great show!!
This has to be this fall’s biggest hit!
If each person who watched the preview last May tells 1 or 2 friends about it, then the ratings will be close to 16-17 million…

  • Sara

I am in love with this show already, but I agree that they should bring some more “cool” people to the choir pretty soon… let the nerds and football player bond, sure, but recruit some cool kids (who are NOT athletes, just spirited/popular). Also, obviously the teacher needs to get with that adorable redhead…

  • invalidname

Do I get positive or negative geek points for not even knowing about this until the Glee version of “Don’t Stop Believin’” was used as interstitial music between sessions at Apple’s World Wide Developer Conference last week?

  • Luisa

This makes waiting for September to roll around just that much harder. Yes, Glee is a slightly over-the-top portrayal of high school, but it’s sure a hella lot more entertaining than high school really was, which is all I’m asking for. Mr. Shu singing “Golddigger”? PRICELESS.

  • Nick

“J,” she’s not pregnant. There’s another promo with a doctor telling her it was a hysterical pregnancy.

  • Stephanie

Sheesh it’s a satire people, it’s supposed to be exaggerated (and makes fun of HSM on purpose). Just because you don’t get the humor doesn’t mean it’s not great.
