New 'Glee' promo still preaching to the choir

Filed under: Glee and tagged: ,

There's a new Glee promo making the rounds, giving us another peek at what the chorus comedy has in store.

PWHQ is obvs pretty Glee-crazy, so I'll start with the positives: Jane Lynch is still getting A+ one-liners, Jayma Mays will start the fall as my new girl crush, and the show looks like it's creating some long-term conflict between Lynch's character and glee advisor Mr. Schuester (Matthew Morrison). Concerns: That Election-style culture clash between the jocks and the glee kids? Message received: Jocks are homophobes, glee kids are dorks. One thing I didn't love in the pilot was Jessalyn Gilsig's Terri character — is our hero Mr. Schuester really married to such an offensively vacant nutjob? From the moments we get in this promo, Terri seems as shrill as she was in the pilot.

What do you think, PopWatchers? Does the new promo alleviate lingering concerns?

I had a terrible high school experience — but one thing that never happened was getting made fun of b/c I did both sports and choir/musicals. That’s what I don’t seem to get about these shows. I mean, jocks aren’t the biggest supporters of the performing arts, I’m sure … but if one of their own was doing it, he/she wouldn’t get crap like all these shows (high school musical, glee) seem to portray. Maybe I’m wrong. I mean, guys would probably make fun of other guys, but they wouldn’t corner them and threaten them like what happened in Glee.

OMG!! The new promo is so funny. I loved the pilot episode and cannot wait for the series this fall.

I just had the chance to see the pilot episode of Glee last week and i was instantly hooked. I immediately downloaded the cast’s version of Don’t Stop Believing. I’m making copies of the episode and handing them out to my friends so that they’ll watch the show come this Fall. The shower scene with Finn was insanely homoerotic i thought my head was going to explode(in a good way). The only thing that i didn’t like was that Terri character as this post mentions. She was shrill and annoying. I can’t wait for the Fall !

I never once got made fun of for being in chorus. I never got made fun of for being on the debate team. I never got made fun of for being on the freaking MATH team. Lots of jocks did both band and a sport. I really think someone needs to send a memo to Hollywood.

I don’t get why we’re supposed to be so sympathetic to characters who marry one-note, shallow, bitchy/belligerent spouses. Lots of TV shows (including “Glee”) do this, like that’s going to make us sympathetic to the put-upon one. Mostly it just makes me think that person is an idiot for having chosen such a rotten life partner in the first place.

A.H. — This show must not be based on your life then. Besides…it’s a TV show, not a documentary! And, it’s really great. Relax and enjoy!

This show has potential (and a great cast) but it embraces the high school (and adult) stereotypes just a little too much. Homophobic, philistine jocks? Check. Overachieving, Tracy Flick-like glee club star? Check. Paunchy football coach? Check. Shrill, materialistic wife? Check. One reason ‘Freaks and Geeks’ was so freakin’ fantastic was that it went beyond those stereotypes and showed a nuanced and realistic picture of high school. The musical numbers in this show are great, though.

I can’t watch the promo here at work, but I echo the concerns raised above. I thought the wife was ridiculously b!tchy, and the jocks were (I hope) caricatures.

That Golddigger cover looks like another hit. But I still think this will only be a “Cult favourite” show, hanging on to dear life.

Was the music playing in that clip a Glee-ified version of Slumdog Millionare?!

Um… the show is set in an deliberate exaggerated world – for dramtic effect. In a sense, Glee is several genres rolled into one: part farce, part parable, and parts drama, comedy, and musical. There are plenty of homophobic, philistine joks in the world, or territorial, petty cheerleading coaches. The genius here is that everything is exaggesrated for effect, and it works beautifully. I’m looking forward to a lot more Glee.

I don’t care if it doesn’t portray real life high school, I just know I’m going to have a blast watching this show week after week. I cannot wait for the Fall.

Mmm…agree that a jock would not be threatened for performing in theater – but he would be mercilessly ridiculed. In HS, they actually are considered two different worlds – for guys, mostly.

It’s a satire people. Say it with me: SATIRE. sat⋅ire  /ˈsætaɪər/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [sat-ahyuhr]
–noun 1. the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc.
    2. a literary composition, in verse or prose, in which human folly and vice are held up to scorn, derision, or ridicule.
    3. a literary genre comprising such compositions.
It’s the use of stereotypes as social commentary…if you don’t “get” it, you’re missing out and should probably just watch something else.

For the love of all things harmony, why isn’t it Fall yet?!
