"Oh I'm the arbiter, I know the score! / From square one he'll be watching all 64!" That's my favorite line from Chess, which should tell you a few things about me: One, I love wordplay, and two, I like Chess enough to have a favorite line. It's almost tough to believe I'm convinced I'm going to die alone excited to watch Glee. Anyway, good news, fellow dorkus brethren: The 2008 Chess in Concert, starring Josh Groban and Idina Menzel, is finally coming to PBS! June 17! Check local listings!
If you hate checking local listings, the DVD and CDs come out June 16, and the rest of the cast includes Rent's Adam Pascal and Jerry Springer: The Opera's David Bedella. Aaagh, it's like the inside of my iPod is having a party.
PopWatchers, tell me some of you know the words to "Someone Else's Story." There are other Chessnuts out there, right?

“Long ago
In someone else’s lifetime
Someone with my name
Who looked a lot like me…”
I LOVE CHESS. I’m so excited for this DVD. I’ve been waiting for so long. Thanks for posting this to remind us!
I used to have that song on constant repeat. My neighbors must have hated me.
I’ve been counting down the hours!!! Josh Groban, Idina Menzel, and Adam Pascal?!? This cannot get any better!
I’m with you, Margaret. Saw the original cast production in London back in 1987 and have been a fan ever since. I’ll be buying the CD and DVD tomorrow.
Oh WOW. I did not know about this, but now I’m TOTALLY excited.
I’m really bummed … just found out it will not be airing on the West Coast. Unbelievable!
I’m not a Josh Groban fan, but this actually seems like a good fit for him. Combined with the other star power, I’ll be buying my cd tomorrow and watching on Wednesday. Chess is one of my all-time favorite musicals and I’m glad it’s getting some attention beyond “One Night in Bangkok” and the old Whitney Huston cover of “I Know Him So Well”.
Who needs a dream?
Who needs ambiiiiiiiiition?
Who’d be the fool
In my posiiiiiiiiition?
Once, I had dreams
Now they’re obseeeeeesions
Hopes became needs
Lovers, posseeeeeeeeesions.
Love Chess. Love it. Lerve it.
Thanks for the heads-up! Just told my DVR to go get it.
Can’t tell from the album’s track list if this is more like London / concept album “Chess” or rewritten-for-stupid-Americans “Chess”. Still, first American release of obscure stuff like “The Soviet Machine”… yay.
Speaking of “Glee”, I was thinking last night… when they finally get the characters out of their stereotypes (Mercedes has to do something other than R&B, Finn can’t be all classic rock), I could totally imagine the show doing its double-meaning schtick by having Finn sing/lead “Where I Want to Be” from “Chess”. Lyric: “Running for my life/ and never looking back/ in case there’s someone right behind/ to shoot me down/ and say/ I always knew you’d fall!”
I know all the words to all the songs, I think I’m a Chess fanatic AND a big Josh Groban fan, he’s right at home on the stage, and Adam Pascal…definitely. This will be a night to remember for PBS
Chess Chess Chess. I sing Anthem for every audition, great news. Glad to hear Josh Groban does a better job than I do
.
Was there opening and closing nights. Listen to original often, have seen this one, and am not crazy about it, but any CHESS is better than no CHESS, right? Miss David Carroll.
The only thing I know about Chess is that it’s the show that gave the world “One Night in Bangkok.” And I’m not nearly musical theatre geek enough to want to learn more (though I too love Glee). But that one thing – that it IS the show that gave the world “One Night in Bangkok” – is enough all by itself to earn the show my near-infinite goodwill.
Love Chess? How about I have the original cast recording, the Danish version, the Swedish version, the Broadway version, the Actors’ Fund version, and the RAH version. Oh, yes, I can sing the words to Someone Else’s Story. LOL.
………… so excited!!!!!!!
