'So You Think You Can Dance': Holy Mary Murphy Botox meltdown!

Wait. Really? We're just openly acknowledging our Botox now? Oh. Okay, fine. At this point, Mary Murphy's bats— craziness is still better than Nigel Lythgoe's INCESSANT RAMBLING. Seriously! Just stop talking!

I loved getting this tweet from Mandi last night: "This is the first season I'm watching SYTYCD. What is the hot tamale train, and why do they seem to want on it?" The explanation she deserves is so devoid of any meaning whatsoever that I can't even bring myself to attempt it. So feel free.

Which SYTYCD judge has annoyed you more after just one week — Nigel or Mary? Her screaming was terrifying, but he did wear sunglasses indoors. Tough call.

Mary. Always, always Mary. She’s the reason I have to watch SYTYCD on Tivo so I can skip her screeching.

MARY!!!!I’d like to tie her to the hot tamale train tracks. Love Love Adam though, would LOVE for him to take over Mary’s position as a permanent judge!

This is the first season I’ve watched SYTYCD as well. I actually found Mary Murphy’s laughing and screeching really funny – we’ll see how I feel about in a couple weeks. Long-time viewers, I imagine, feel differently. Have no idea what the hot tamale train is either.

I love Mary Murphy. She’s so much fun. You realize how entertaining she is once you see another country’s edition of this show (i.e. Canada) and see how bland and boring the judges can be. Mary is very entertaining. I love Cat Deeley last night too.
    More Cat Deeley!

I find Mary completely hilarious, screaming included. The botox comment was awesome.

Love Mary – she’s genuine and I don’t mind Nigel. I hate adam – he is the one that talks and talks. That being said, I feel we were totally manipulated by all 3 judges last night. They raved about so so dancers because they felt bad that we didn’t know them better. How about no more bad dancing and show the good dancers. I hope this doesn’t turn into american idol.

I’ve been watching SYTYCD since the 2nd season, and I have to say that Mary’s screeching has become more and more obnoxious each season. It started out being funny, but now it’s aggravating. Last night I think she gave just one constructive criticism – the rest was incoherent babbling. I mute her whenever it’s her turn to “judge.” I agree with the comment about Adam – he’s fabulous, and I love what he’s brought to the show these past few seasons.

I don’t actually mind either of them. I suppose I’ve gotten used to Mary’s screaming and Nigel only annoys me when he’s being blatantly homophobic.
I also had the misfortune of watching the Canadian SYTYCD last year. Great show with amazing dancers but I couldn’t stand most of the Canadian judges and was about ready to worship the ground Cat Deeley walks on after watching Leah for a few weeks. Suddenly nothing the American judges do or say seems so terrible!

The fact that you prefer Mary’s screaming like a banshee to Nigel’s intelligent critiques of each performance makes me wonder why I read your stuff every week.

@Chelsea – LOL! I so agree… the Canadian judges were *horrible*. It was like the global stereotype of Canadians come to life – there was almost no criticism, let alone anything constructive. It was all so wishy-washy and polite! (And the host, Leah, has to go! She was AWFUL.)OTOH, the Australian version of SYTYCD was AWESOME. The judges were more professional – a good balnce between criticism and compliment (with most of the criticism kept constructive), the group numbers were amazing, the musical guest were hot and current, and the geatured dance guests were teriffic shocases for the best Australia has to offer. The dancers were excellent and charismatic, and the host was decent (though no Cat Deely my any means). I hope the American version steps the rest of the show (other than the always excellent choreography) up to the quality of the Australian version.

Nigel and Adam give real critiques, pointing out what was good and what could be improved. Mary may screech quite a bit–and not really say anything useful in addition to it–but she’s like the buffer out of the three judges, reminding the contestants to have fun. At least these three judges are worth listening to rather than the four on Idol…

  • Aaron

Mary’s screaming can be annoying, but what she’s still more competent than Randy, Kara, and Paula combined on that other show. And Nigel seems like the only one willing to point out tiny flaws which is actually helpful because all those go right over my head. I do appreciate the man’s expertise.

Cat Deeley is by far the best host on reality tv, no offense to my second fave Jeff Probst. She has fun and is never condesending to the dancers. Love Mary too. Thank God Nigel got a haircut since the audition rounds. He was looking like a sadder older version of the lead singer of Whitesnake, David Coverdale.

Mary used to drive me nuts, but she’s grown on me. LOVED the Botox comment. So obviously true, but hilarious anyway.
I feel like I drift off when Nigel talks because he goes on so long, but he doesn’t bug me too much.
My least favorite judge by far is Mia. Like her choreography, and wish she’d stay there permanently.
And as a proud Canuck, I have to agree, the Canadian judges were brutal on our version of this show! The dancers were amazing, and some of the routines were miles above anything I’ve seen on the US version, but we desperately needed better judges and a better host. They invited so many of the US judges on (Mary, Dan, Adam, etc.) that I think the producers figured that out themselves.
Really though, American fans of this show should go on You Tube and find some videos from the Canadian version, you’ll really like them. Nico and Arissay’s “Somebody To Love” is the best, I think.

  • JS

Add me to the list of Canadian version judge and host haters. Thank goodness the dancers were just as fantastic as the ones on the American version, that was the saving grace. I like Mary now (she takes some getting used to), I find her genuine and attentive and though last night she may not have done much more than scream, she often gives valid criticism when warranted. I think the judges (and we) were just amazed at the performances for a 1st show, so they let some stuff go that later in the season they would pick on.
