Michael Sheen, who plays Aro in the The Twilight Saga: New Moon, has said how seriously Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson take their roles in the franchise, and after reading this Metro World News interview with Stewart, I'm starting to believe him.
• Explaining Bella's role in the second film, she says, "She loses the man she's in love with, but she also loses her entire life plan, and she's so young to have to be forced into a decision like that. It's just a glorified, elaborate version of the worst breakup you've ever been through. All of a sudden you question everything. All of a sudden you know nothing and you're dropped in the middle of a freezing cold ocean.Oddly, we have a character that's warm enough and bright enough to bring her out of that, and it's truly gut-ripping. Because as perfect as Jacob is for her, she holds on to an ideal, the ultimate fiery love that she has for Edward even though it's not comfortable, it's not practical and it's not a good idea. So it's really a very strong thing to do. It takes someone who really trusts themselves."
• Asked if Bella is introverted or just seeking an ideal, she says, "It's not that she's incredibly introverted. She's just yet to have found a connection that is truthful. She's a seeker of the truth. She's not one to get wrapped up in something that is a fantasy. She doesn't set herself up for disappointment. So that's what makes the story with her and Edward so compelling, in that this is a girl that normally wouldn't do something this crazy."
All this talk about Edward being "an ideal" and a "connection that is truthful" made me think back to a conversation I had with a friend who didn't understand why Bella and Edward were actually drawn to one another — besides the fact that he's hellahot and her blood is like his own personal heroin. Is it more romantic if a love is somehow destined — like in a scent or an imprint — or if the connection is actually explained? Do you feel like it's explained in Twilight? Is it as basic as a lion wanting to take care of a lamb, and the lamb wanting to feel protected? (Probably not, right, since Bella isn't actually safe with Edward?) Maybe Bella is the only teen in Forks who ever wanted to listen to Edward's Debussy CD?

Answer: They are both so annoying that no one else would have them.
I asked myself this question repeatedly while reading all four of the books. I never really understood the connection between Bella and Edward. We were told they loved each other without any real explanation on why or seeing the relationship truly develop. I would have understood Bella’s heartbreak and depression in New Moon better if there relationship was more developed.
I am still and always will be disturbed by the age difference. Edward may look like a teenager still but he is decades older than Bella. Why would an old man with decades of life and experiences lived be interested in a small town, gone no where teen age girl?????
O.k antoinette cleary you have a problem with age but really we the team edward people we dont have a problem i think we should respect steffies style of writing otherwise you should write a book and proof me wrong
We must have been typing at the same moment but I second what Jade said too.
And before anyone starts bashing me let me state that I do really enjoy the books and film.
Someone asked why an age old vampire woud want a teenage girl?
Sounds no different than a human man!
I don’t get it either. First, it just has Bella trying to figure out how Edward was able to stop the van. Then, when she finds out, she’s suddenly in love with him. I didn’t get it. Maybe she really is a sadomasochist. When she finds out he wants to kill her, she wants him. But I have no idea why Edward loves her. She’s clumsy, annoying, overly-horny, fangirl-ish, etc. A very unlikable character.
This girl(Kristen Stewart) is very smart for her age. I was not thinking this deeply when I was her age.
The point is that Bella loved Edward the minute she saw him because something about him made her curious. Yes it started that she just wanted to know how he stopped the van but than it evolved into so much more!

Who can really explain why anyone falls in love? Or why you fall for one person but not another? You can name the things you like about a person but when it comes down to it, it’s uncontrollable who you fall for, whether it’s good for you or not. It’s not hard to see why Bella would fall for Edward. And after reading part of Midnight Sun, even though I shouldn’t have, i now understand fully why Edward falls for Bella. He sees her strength, her willingness to put other’s happiness first and take care of people and how she never wants the spotlight on herself and is more special than she seems of even realizes. Alright, I’m done.
Agree Agree Agree. I could tell you the things I love about my husband but couldn’t tell you ‘why I fell in love with him’. I think it’s perfectly spelt out what Bella sees in Edward and then throughout the series, you get hints of what it is in Bella that attracts Edward (apart from her heroin blood). I’d be interested if someone could give an example of a book where it is totally spelt out WHY people fall in love. Did anyone ask that about Romeo and Juliet??
My biggest problem with Twilight has always been the very unrealistic “true” love between Edward and Bella. They have very little in common, do not have a particularly great repartee, and frankly don’t even have chemistry. Honestly, the reason they are so hot for each other is because they are so hot for each other. It’s called lust, people. Unfulfilled lust. And since the Twilight series is supposed to be a giant metaphor for abstinence, it’s very clear that Edward’s powerful attraction to Bella’s blood is really meant to be his strong desire to have sex with her. Well, that is not true love. Lust never lasts. That’s why so many Hollywood couplings/marriages have failed – they were clearly based on lust, and little else. In reality, Edward and Bella wouldn’t last too long after their hot, super-sex filled marriage (and the fact that Meyer wrote so much about their “bedroom shaking” sex so clearly proves that this series is really all about lust).
Well trish i think you wrong about the lust it is love i mean i havent read the books yet but if the love chemistry between edward and bella draws me so much i think you should reread the books maybe you will find something you have missed
When I read Twilight, I completely understood why Bella fell in love Edward…it didn’t happen when she “first met him”. He’s brilliant, artistic and she realized that he fights against every one of his instincts in order to be a good person. THAT’S what makes him beautiful to her.
With Edward, the realization came when he started to see how different she is than the others around her: she’s kind in a way that others aren’t at 17, she sees the core of things (it’s why she’s never afraid of him, even though she “should be”: she sees who he really is), and she’s self-sacrificing.
They see in each other what others have missed.
Beyond that, some connections can’t be fully explained. Some people are just kindred souls. I like what Renee says to Bella in Breaking Dawn:
“You seem to have found another old soul.”
And for people who don’t get this…have you ever read Pride & Prejudice , Wuthering Heights or seen Titanic?
Many times, people who fall in love DON’T have a lot in common.
Some people just have a powerful connection. Not everything in life can be explained away.
well i see it in this way: they are just perfect for each other, edward has seen all the world if you can say that, he has knew a lot of people, so many people that They all seem very monotonous for him, and sudenly this girl appears, she is so diferent, he can´t read her mind, and every thing she do is so unexpected for him, she just fascinates him; who won’t fall for that?. and for bella’s, well he is hot, he is smart, he is polite, respectful, he isn’t thinking about sex all day long, and for make everything more exciting he is dangerous but not dangerous.. even more, he is well look’s like a 17 years old guy but he is not a jerk or a moron, he is mature and protective but not perfect, really, which girl does not fall for that?
RYAN: Wow, ok, so Pride and Prejudice and Wuthering Heights are really poor examples to prove your point. In P & P, Darcy and Lizzy don’t just love each other inexplicably. Darcy falls in love with Lizzy BECAUSE OF HER BRILLIANT WIT AND CHARACTER, and because she doesn’t care that he’s rich. And Lizzy finally falls for Darcy when he actually becomes a better person for her, and she realizes that he is “truly the best man I’ve ever known.” Thru it all, Lizzy and Darcy have sizzling conversations where it is clear that they completely understand each other, and can get under the others skin. Yeah, I’d say there’s a very strong, very explained connection there.
Heathcliff and Cathy have a very similar they-completely-understand-the-other-person connection. Also, they are both cruel people who like to torment others – a perfect match.
I’m not going to argue you about Titanic, though, except to say that their relationship was very clearly an infatuation that probably wouldn’t last.
