Emporio Armani has unveiled its new fall/winter underwear campaign starring David Beckham. I don’t believe I’m typing this: I’m not impressed. The body is beautiful, obviously. But the use of the rope, particularly in the image on the left, feels a little too Top Model to me. And that hair, particularly in the profile view on the right…I know I’m overly sensitive to bad hair on men — again, it’s why I’ve missed so many recent Nicolas Cage and Tom Hanks movies — but come on now. To quote my friend Eva: “How are you looking at his head??? “Looks a little too…Adolf.” “Damn you for making me look at his head! You’re determined to ruin it for me.”
I don’t know what I’ve been looking at that has numbed me to the charms of David Beckham — perhaps if that head-on photo would have featured white briefs it would have “popped” for me — but it’s official: I am over him. Crazy talk or are you also underwhelmed? Let the Great Underwear Ad Debate of June 11, 2009 begin and vote in the poll below.
P.S. Also up for debate: Mike Bruno says it looks like a “plastic hair thingy” that is upsetting me, not Beckham’s actual hair. I cannot bring myself to call his publicist and ask for a definitive answer to that question. What do you think? Hair, right? Bad, bad hair.

mandi, i am with you – the hair…it is bad. and becks has had a lot of bad hairstyles over the years, so i’m not totally “meh” over the picture itself.
So on one hand, we have a (cheeky) post examining how a slightly smaller thumb detracts from Megan Fox’s (reported) hotness. In another, we have complaints about how something that looks like a misguided and unfortunate part ruins these pictures of Beckham.
Can’t people just stop nitpicking and appreciate hot people like me and Beckham alone?
(P.S. The rope IS stupid.)
Are you mad woman? The picture on the left is on the scorching side of hot (and is the reason gays everywhere are all in a twitter)
Under-whelming and over-exposed! Forget being a soccer player – he should be “I wanna be a super-model”. Never mind the hair; the abs look air-brushed to perfection and icky. Get real! I have always admired Becks looks as much as he is a soccer player, but this soccer player turned pop celebrity turned super-model also makes me want to say “so over him”.
He’s much hotter when he’s cleaned up and in nice clothes and the rope is STUPID and so is the hair
the pictures are totaly hot – Beckham’s physic is incrediable and the sexuality the ad presents is undeniable.
The use of the rope is a VERY obvious nod to Tom of Finland. Any gay over 40 could have told you that. But yeh, the plastic hair is ewww.
“The use of the rope is a VERY obvious nod to Tom of Finland. Any gay over 40″
I am a gay man, 42,and I can assure I have no ida who Tom Finland is…
i hate tattoos with a passion, so, as gorgeous as beckham is, i can’t look at him when his arms aren’t covered. i just have an intense, irrational loathing of tattoos.
I should have clarified… any gay man over 40 who doesn’t still live at his Mom’s house in Nebraska.
His hair is now as plastic as his wife.
The rope and hair are definitely ridiculous, but his physique is still amazing!
The previous campaign was all about the underwear- and how Beckham filled them. This one has so many competing elements that it loses impact.
More like UNsurprisingly underwhelming. The tattoos in those pics make his arms look lacerated, I want to bandage them up.
Who cares about the hair, I know it looks bad..but that is what modelling really is! You follow what the photographer wants, and there are lots and lots of other ads with models with worst hair and act (the rope) than this, but you don’t complain about it – coz they’re models. Well treat him as a model for once.
For me, it’s all about those underwears. It’s been a problem for you coz you expected to see his beautiful FACE, not his body. That’s why you cannot appreaciate these HOT pics. I prefer the picture of him in those white boxer, he looks more natural like that. And for those saying he’s trying to be a supermodel, obviously you haven’t seen a lot of his pictures all of over the years. He has a lot of severe pictures than this with GQ..and yes, he’s been modelling for a LONG time now, so I can’t see what’s different the supermodel comment will make.
