I’d like to start off by apologizing, I know the comments section of this blog was a mess last week (hence the quadruple posts). I’m told by the EW geek squad that it’s been taken care of. If not, next week I will be mailing each of you a personal hard copy of this blog…although, then it would just be a letter and not a blog.
It seems we have a consensus on Wes and his magical guitar. To have a man play guitar and sing to you is cool. The way Wes is doing it…not so much. DaynaJ may have had the best idea this week: “Dave beats up Juan with Wes’ guitar.” Damn, why couldn’t our producers have come up with that gem? Many of you have asked how Jillian pins the roses on the guys so easily. First, our fantastic art department puts these killer vampire clips on the back of the roses. It makes it pretty easy for Jilli to just slide them on the guys. We do practice several times before the first rose ceremony that first night, just to make sure she’s got it down.
Let me dive into this week’s episode by saying, in my mind, this seasonreally starts now. As you could probably tell, the goofy fun and gamesare over and things have now taken a very serious turn. From here onout this is a fantastic roller coaster ride that I really can’t comparewith any other season we’ve had. The guys were extremely relieved to betold they would be leaving the bunk house and never returning. This isthe first season ever where three weeks in we’ve left our main houseand never returned again. We do have one more rose ceremony in LosAngeles later on but it’s not at this house. Personally, I loved thetravel and felt like it really fit for this season. Jillian loved beingback home in Vancouver. It gave her a little more confidence and anextra spring in her step being on her home turf. Jilli had a thing forKiptyn since the moment he stepped out of the limo. She told me howgorgeous she thought he was on night one. Their one-on-one date inVancouver couldn’t have gone better in her eyes.
I’m going to answer next week’s question now. No, that wasn’t Jillian’s actual loft. She does live just down the street and they are very similar, but for privacy purposes we had to use a different loft. Jillian wanted you to know that she really did make her homemade pasta sauce and salad dressing. She did it all in 45 minutes and she claims it was really good. You could tell she loved this date and was as giddy as a school girl. Did you notice the little happy dance she did right after she closed the door? Classic Jillian. Then came the “Olympic” group date with 50 guys. I know you’re waiting for me to say something smart about the sport of curling but the truth is ( I know I shouldn’t be admitting this) every four years I find myself entranced by this damn sport during the Olympics. Yeah, I said it. I like frozen shuffle board. It’s hypnotic.
Let me just say that I sympathize with Jake. I too know what it’s like to have to defend yourself for being too perfect. For those of us on this planet who have never done wrong and are always right and are just down right 100% perfect all the time, life can be hard. Seriously, Jillian told me she does like Jake. He’s a great guy but when somebody always says just the right thing at the right time you have to wonder if that’s sincere. That’s her battle right now with Jake: Is this guy for real?
Okay, I put this off as long as I could in this blog. Let’s discuss Dave. I don’t think I even need to ask for your comments on this guy this week. I’m pretty sure I’ll get an earful. I agree with Jillian. This guy was way out of bounds in the way he treated her on this date. He was incredibly disrespectful and beyond inappropriate. This is just another reason why this show is so “amazing.” I’m guessing all of you ladies out there have dated “this” guy before and had to deal with it. I hope you all were able to keep your dinner down while you were watching this. Jillian handled herself well and took the high road. And in the end she did the best thing she could do…show him the door. I can’t wait to talk to this guy at the “Men Tell All” reunion special!
The two-on-one date with Mark and Mike may have surprised you a bit but let me explain why Jillian sent Mike home and gave the rose to Mark. Mike was very eloquent and said all the right things but ultimately at the end of the night Jillian didn’t know him any better (kind of like Jake). He spent the night selling himself instead of making a connection. Mark on the other hand spent his time telling Jillian revealing stories about his past and really connected with her on a much deeper level. She knows people will think she’s crazy for letting a guy like Mike go but she felt a much deeper connection with Mark, so he got the rose.
The cocktail party started out great in theory. We had one of the top floors of the Fairmont hotel in downtown Vancouver all to ourselves and Jillian had brought in her cousin Tori to meet and help judge the guys. Because of how things turned out that night you never got to see Tori. Jillian was already stressed over letting Mike go and showed up this night really looking for the guys to cheer her up and relieve the stress. Then all hell broke loose, or in her words, everything turned into a “Gong Show.” One by one, guys started telling Jillian that certain men weren’t here for the right reasons, and that some might even have girlfriends back home. Then came Tanner P.’s discussion…the straw that broke Jillian’s back. After his words Jillian called off the cocktail party and by the time I found her in the deliberation room her head was spinning and she was pretty upset. This is where I have to admit it’s different for me to host The Bachelorette than The Bachelor. I went into that rose ceremony a little pissed off and wanted to get to the bottom of this for Jillian. I felt so bad for Tanner P. during this confrontation. Even though some won’t feel sorry for him since he stirred all this up, I really thought he was going to pass out. He was sweating and didn’t take a breath the entire time. Jillian got a little annoyed with the guys because instead of worrying about who might have a girlfriend, all the guys cared about was who said what. This confrontation went on for a while and there were a lot of awkward silences. Emotions were running pretty high. In the end, Jillian really didn’t get any answers and sent Dave and Juan home. As you can probably guess this isn’t over and Jillian is now very skeptical of several guys heading into next week’s episode which takes place just a couple hours away from Vancouver in Whistler.
One of the biggest surprises we encountered this season takes place next week and it leads to one of the most emotional episodes we’ve ever had. Wow, how ’bout that for a tease! Now, if you’ll excuse me, curling is on the ocho!

For the first time in Bachelorette History, I think this really was the most dramatic rose ceremony ever. I could literally feel the awkwardness. I hope hope hope that Jillian sees through Wes eventually. I puke in my mouth every time they get together. And I have to say that I loved that Dave blamed Juan for his getting sent home. Someday he’ll pull his head out of his butt.
Anyway, thanks for blogging Chris! I love reading this… absolutely cannot wait for next week.
First, great job on the blog, Chris. Second, Jillian said, what woman wouldn’t want to be serenaded by a guy. Um, this one. I think it is cheesey and uncomfortable. But then again, I don’t like to have “Happy Birthday” sung to me in a public setting, so there you go.
I have to admit I was absolutely shocked to see Juan let go (but happy), so are there times when you’re absolutely floored that one stays/another goes? Or have you pretty much seen enough that nothing surprises you anymore. Also, when the show is taping how much of the “drama” are you aware of that is taking place in the house (i.e. Dave’s rage) or are you seeing it for the first time like the rest of us? Thanks again!
pls. make sure you take precautions at the Tell All episode. i don’t know how serious Dave’s rage issues are but i am sure the backlash he has and will be getting is going to put him on edge. i just don’t want to see anything nasty happen on that day.
i love tanner p. he’s hilarious and straightforward. best friend material.
Chris- I am so glad you mentioned the fact that MOST of the guys were just annoyed at who “told” or ruined it for the rest of them. I wondered if Jillian noticed or picked up on it. There were a few sincere guys that made comments- but….a lot of the comments were not productive. We’ve seen it a lot- the guy or girl who “tells” on their housemates rarely get that far. Tanner P is toast next week. He totally set himself up to be the friend or insider. He didn’t talk about feet this week- he was 1st being serious, then 2nd- he was scared absolutely shitless during that rose ceremony. Great episode. LOVE your blog as always!
Chris, Loved this episode and you were right about the season starting tonight. Great coverage on Vancouver…what a gorgeous city. I really love all these activities that highlight what Canada is all about. I can’t wait for next week.
Onto the drama. I’m confident that Jillian will figure things out. Your blog explains several things.
Dave…way out of line. he needs to go to jail in North Korea! enough said.
Kip…love this guy..I’m impressed too! Good Guy
Reid…why can’t we see more of him??? Love his wit. Good Guy
Ed…he looks guilty on the GF drama
Wes…gotta go quickly…bad guy
Jake…MIA??? Love him…Good guy
Chris, I live in Vancouver & Jillian’s phone and address are still listed publicly. Suggest that she de-list this pronto for her own safety.
I’ve grown fond of Jillian & hope she has found true love. It seems that she lives in my neighbourhood and could represent any one of many 29 year old young women in this city.
I was rooting for Mark to stay, and have been since day 1. I have a feeling he doesn’t go any further than next week, so if possible, please try to show him a lot.
Tanner is a cutie, but he’s screwed.
Reid for the win!
Hey Chris, I love reading your blog. I love Jake , but do not think that Jill will chose him. I would LOVE to see Jake as the next Bachelor! Ed seems nice too, I really like him too. Jill seems smarter than to fall for a guy like Wes. I hope someone gets the angry dude, some anger management therapy. He was good entertainment, but I am glad he is gone. Can’t wait until next week.
PS I think Tanner is great. I am glad he told Jill someone claims to have a girlfriend. She needed to know and deserves to know who. I can’t believe “Wes” claimed to be clean? Whatever ??
So I’m mildly curious about what goes down next week. But after the Jason brou-ha-ha, it’s hard to imagine anything being too shocking. I still love Jake, but Ed and Kiptyn are coming on strong. Chris – can you tell us curling newbs if the sweeping is intended to speed up the “stone” or slow it down? What a funny little sport.
Is it just me or does anyone else see that Tanner P is gay!! Hello!!! Disclaimer: I love gay men, there is nothing wrong with being gay but Jillian doesn’t need a gay lover
Great blog Chris. I looked for it as soon as the epi finished airing. First of all, please thank the EW webmaster from us all for fixing the comment form. I think the moving out of the bunkhouse and going travelling is spicing up the show. I hope they do it again in the future. I also cannot wait for the Men Tell All. Q1. Please ask Tanner P what he was feeling and why during tonight’s rose ceremony. I thought he might pass out. Q2. Please ask whoever has a GF why they went on the show. Q3. Please ask Dave if he now sees that he has an anger mgmt issue and gets that he is scaring off women with it.
I too was shocked she picked Mark over Mike. Mike seems way more emotionally mature and ready for marriage, not that I saw anything wrong with Mark. At the beginning of the epi I thought Dave might redeem himself as he just seemed competitive at the curling rink, but he became a tool on their date. He thought she was teasing him? He clearly cannot read female body language…
…I thought Tanner P did the right thing by sticking up for Jillian and I was dissapointed to consider the possibility that most of those guys know who has a GF and said nothing. I am worried about that big surprise you mentioned and we see alluded to in the preview. I don’t think it is Wes, who I hope goes home to his GF next week. I think it is one of the guys we and Jillian really like and I am praying it is not Ed…who is my favourite. Looking forward to your blog next week.
“can you tell us curling newbs if the sweeping is intended to speed up the “stone” or slow it down? What a funny little sport.”
seattle_girl – sweeping can maintain the speed. It won’t make the rock go faster but it keeps the rock from slowing down as fast as it might. It also keeps its path straighter. The rock is thrown with a little twist of the handle to make it ‘curl’ in one direction or another and the sweeping is very important to that aspect.
Curling is a wonderful game. It’s very strategic and cerebral to get the rocks placed in various spots in the ‘house’ (the painted rings that you saw the guys aiming for) and also very athletic. Proper sweeping takes a lot of effort and energy.
Try to watch a few games during next February’s Olympics. It’s a fascinating game that’s fast gaining popularity in the States.
Great show tonight. Jillian’s got a great bunch of guys to choose from once she gets rid of three or four more of them. She’s so cute and sincere about all this, I’m really hoping she finds a guy to love.
I actually expected her to give Mark the rose, and not Mike. Something in the way Mike was laying it all out on the line, it really left her with no where else to go if she didn’t feel the same (and it seemed obvious she didn’t.) But as you said, with Mark, she learned something new and he opened up to her.
Wes is coming across as really sleazy, and I think Jillian knows it. Not sure why he got a rose, but she didn’t seem very happy about giving him one. JMO.
I like Jake, but he’s getting the Jeremy “Too perfect to be real” edit, so it’s impossible to actually see who the guy is.
I love that Tanner P. spilled. Good for him, because Jillian deserves to know.
My favorite: Ed. Love this guy.
What a show Chris. What a blog as well. Good one. Thanks for taking the time to fill us in on more of whats going on every week. Love the deleted scene of Tanner P., by the way… I don’t know how you keep your cool at rose ceremonies like that, I would have been ripping them all a new one! (To tell you the truth, I wish you would! hahaha)
I hope for Jillian’s sake, the truth comes out. Oh wait, it always does! She doesn’t deserve that. Glad she got rid of the psycopath rageaholic!
P.S. Thanks for taking the time to read all these, it’s awesome of you.
Watched the Tanner P deleted scene. Hilarious! More deleted scenes please!
I just love Jake to death, I think he has so much to offer and just seems like such an awesome guy. If she doesn’t pick him she’s crazy and doesn’t deserve him. ugh.. I hope she doesn’t break his heart!! if so… Jake…email me!
are we going to get to see jillian drunk again? (like she was last week in that metallic strapless dress?) how did she get through the rose ceremony that night? did you guys have to pry that wine glass away from her and force feed her some coffee? was she hung the next day? don’t get me wrong, jillian rawks and i’d be drinking too. i’d like to see her get even drunker while playing footsie with Tanner … now that would be an interesting show!
My guess is Wes is going home next week (because he seems like such a phony anyway), but that’s probably the same guess everyone else is having and the show might surprise us in the end. Maybe it will be Tanner. Har! Speaking of Tanner, why is Jillian giving the pass to a foot fetishist. She can’t be serious. Dave was too scary for words – he’s violent, a control freak, and a misogynist – and I’m glad he got the boot. Juan also struck me as a big phoney. Full of disingenuous sap. It’s ironic that both Dave and Juan got the boot at the same time, considering their mutual antipathy. I hope whomever is the dishonest one doesn’t prove to be Ed because he’s the most attractive one there.
THIS IS THE MOST DRAMATIC COMMENT EVUH!!!
(Uhm uh actually it is pretty much like every other comment you’ve ever heard, but we’re contractually bound to start that way, aren’t we?).
I just love this show–it makes the $64,000 Question look Creditable. Dave and Huh-uan sent home *on the very same episode.* THAT’S SO DRAMATIC!!! Guys are confronted about having a girlfriend and *no one mans up (drink).* UNBELIEVABLE DRAMA! It just doesn’t get any more cheesetastic than this.
Chris,
Love the show. I think the guys that were trying to tell Jillian to be careful are stand up guys. Isn’t that what you would want your Best Friend to do? To have your back for you! I can’t wait for next week.
The last Bachelor Bachelorette shows make me wonder: Why isn’t footage (or secret footage)from the contestants made available to the current Bachelor or Bachelorette to help them in making their decisions. Jason and Jillian could have seen another side of the contestants and maybe made different or better decisions about who was there for the right reasons. Just a thought.
Tanner is fine. He just happens to have a fetish that the majority doesn’t share. What’s the big deal? It’s a simple matter of tolerating someone who is different. Demonizing that is inappropriate.
This is the first episode when Wes really turns me off though. We saw him lying blatantly on screen. This is a definite deal breaker. Nothing subjective or prejudical at all.
Tanner wasn’t the only one holding his breath last night – I had problems breathing through the entire show. OK I exaggerate. I am THRILLED that Jillian finally sent David home and was impressed that Tanner P spoke up to Jillian about the GF situation. Still, I agree that it will kick him in the buttocks later. Can someone PLEASE tell me why so many people dislike Juan? I missed the first show and have not seen him say or do anything “snakey.” Thank you, Chris, for taking the time to blog for us.
I wish this show was on every night of the week. It’s tough having to wait week after week to see what’s next. Especially after the previews for next week. Dave was scary. He needed to be gone earlier. Did Dave say at the end “it is Mike”? I like Jake. Nice guys do finish last, but not in my book. I’ve had too many bad guys. Can’t wait for next week!!
Thanks, Chris for taking the time to blog for us. And I watch the curling during Olympics, too! I was thrilled to see David get the boot at last, but am confused about all the animosity toward Juan (I missed the first show) – please someone explain to me why he is considered a “snake.” I’ve only seen him as polite, considerate and on the quiet side. As for Tanner P, I am impressed that he had the nerve to give Jillian a head’s up. Someone definitely needed to help her out. The “Men Tell All” episode should be terrific -or do I mean terrifying? I agree with the comment that special security might be in order!!
“curling is on the ocho!”… Love it!
I also didn’t see what was so awful about Juan, but I did miss the first episode, so maybe he was a jerk then? Don’t know.
I wish Jillian would have told Dave exactly why she dumped him since he was so clueless he had to ask. He was gross and repulsive and I’m guessing he’s been turned down for many a kiss (although in his booze-addled mind maybe he’s forgotten).
wes – biggest cheese-ass on the show
