So is Best Week Ever cancelled or what? Well, a little of column A, a little of column B: The show will be back in January, but another “revamp” might mean the end of comedian Paul F. Tompkins’ reign as host. I can accept that, but only on the condition that VH1 give him another show. Do my bidding, television!
Recall the great BWE Switch of Aught Eight, in which frequent commentator Tompkins became sole host of the half-hour series. Some fans embraced the new format, but others…a lot less so. I’m somewhere in the middle: I’m ten kinds of crazy about Tompkins, and he’s one of my favorite stand-ups to go see (seriously, I think I’ve seen him five times in the last three years), but I’m not convinced the format really did him any favors. He’s tweeted that he’s more or less done, saying “they’ll bring it back in 2010, but staff (including me) can’t go that long without work. Maybe new cast?” But what of my weekly fix of hyperliterate, charmingly grandiose humor?! Don’t leave me, PFT.
What about you, PW BWE fans? Do you want another revamp, or were you happy with the current model? And what the nuts are we supposed to do until January?

I liked the show’s old format and was nowhere near as devoted of a viewer once they switched to the Paul-hosted format — as much as I like Paul, I missed Frangela and the gang!
The Soup>>>>>>>>>>>>BWE.
I can only pray they go back to the old format! Unless they can’t afford it. But ever since PFT became host, I cancelled my series recording on the show. Miss, miss miss…Frangela, Melissa Rauch, Jessica ST. Clair, Mike Britt, Paul Scheer et al.
I used to watch BWE all the time. As soon as PFT became the host and they changed the whole format…I watched a few min of his 1st episode as host and have not watched since then.
The old format was much better than the single host format. But I don’t really care because anyone with a brain can tell you that the most superior weekly pop-culture skewing show out there is The Soup! I love me some Joel McHale.
While its too bad to see that the show won’t be back for a while, maybe it will be brought back in a form I can watch again. I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who didn’t like the new PFT format. Bring back the whole team!
To be honest I think at times PFT can be funny but overall I don’t find him that amusing. I love that Chuck Nice still hosts the Sizzler he’s fantastic.. as is Doug Benson. I’m sorry to see BWE go because my dvr is gonna be lonely on friday nights.. but then again Joel Mchale is holding steady. Loves him!
I like Paul and follow him on Twitter, but I think the Soup has far-surpassed BWE (I never really loved the old format either, there were so many contributors that they often wound up saying the same thing). So I hope Paul can find new, better work!
Nothing against him personally, but when they switched the format, I was no longer entertained. I can’t remember the last time I watched the show whereas it used to be appointment viewing. Of course, that can generally be said for the entire VH1 lineup. No thank you. Am I getting old?
I also like Paul (he is so cute!), but I found him unbearable when he took over. I did like him when there was no host and he made guest spots. He’s just not appealing as the host. I loved Frangela, though! Bring them back.
More time for Paul to appear with Tom Scharpling on The Best Show on WFMU? I sure hope so!
Seriously, The Best Show is the funniest thing you’re not listening to. Go to WFMU.org or sign up for the podcast!
Cancel it! CSPAN is funnier than that show.
I loved it with the old format, but gave up on it and replaced it with the Soup after they switched (there’s too much overlap for me to watch both). Maybe it’s PFT’s fault or maybe the format didn’t suit him, but man, did it get unfunny fast.
In it’s old format, BWE was still just something to watch while lounging on the couch on Saturday mornings; with the new, I couldn’t sit through more than a minute. That set hurt my eyes, and I just didn’t find the host that amusing. I’ll take The Soup any day.
I’ll miss Best Week Ever but I love The Soup and The Dish is pretty funny too!
