How did Neil Patrick Harris do as Tonys host?

Around here, the general consensus on last night's Tony Awards seems to betelecast: "eh"; Neil Patrick Harris as host: "yay." What did you think of Dr. Horrible's hosting skills? Check out NPH's performance of a heavily improvised West Side Story parody tune to close out the show, then vote in our poll, below!

Missed the show? Read this morning's Tonys 2009: Best and Worst Moments photo gallery so that you can fake your way through a Tonys conversation, or check out PopWatch's live blog from last night.

Oh, and even if you have no interest in NPH, polls, the stage, or television, your day will be incomplete if you don't watch Bret Michaels' collision with a descending piece of the set. A stunt man could not have pulled this off with more nonchalance. My god. It's a marvel.

NPH is a total class act and a performing wonder. I hereby recant all the snotty remarks I made about Doogie when I was a teenager.

  • Chris

Loved him as host. Maybe now he’ll finally get an Emmy award.

  • DanOregon

Considering they cobbled that closing medley together in the last hour of the show – I was quite impressed. As good as anything Billy Crystal did on the Oscars with weeks to prepare.
TV Land Awards, Tonys, – when does NPH get a crack at the Emmys? Probably the most entertaining and lively Tonys I’ve ever seen.
Other Top moments: Michaels, the mike problems (nothing like live theater), Liza being Liza, Langella, the Billys, the Hair performance, and seeing Angela Landsbury win number 5.

  • Gillian

He was good but he wasn’t there enough!

  • Sara

I loved NPH as host – I’m only sorry we didn’t get to see more of him! Quick note – the ending song wasn’t improvised, it was written by the Hairspray guys (with lots of different verses depending on who actually won).

The closing number was fantastic! It is so great to see a LIVE show.

  • Wait for it…

I was lucky enough to be at Radio City last night and NPH rocked! He entertained the audience with magic tricks and his general charm during the commercial breaks. A total class act. The hilarious final number was written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman of ‘Hairspray’ fame.

I thought he was terrific. Just got back from NYC, wish I could have seen him. He is so talented & funny! I’m proud that he is from my home state-New Mexico.

Other than singing a nice little number at the end of the telecast, he didn’t really do a whole lot. There were times I forgot he was even there. Sorry, but singing a funny song at the end of a 3+ hour telecast doesn’t make for a great host.

  • Bill B.

He is wonderful at this type of thing. Smart, witty, relaxed, inviting, quick on his feet and extraordinarily likeable. Quite a class act. I would have liked to have seen more of him, but the show was already three hours long!

I didn’t watch it… A friend of mine was there and he seemed to like it. If this finale was really improvised I am truly impressed. If not he still did a good job, but I’m not quite as in awe.

    I loved Dougie…
I think Jessica Lange was snobbish on her response to his comment which obviously was a joke.

  • tommyb

What a shame that outstandingingly talented actors we never get to see got the bum’s rush off the stage during their moving and intelligent acceptance speeches, but there was plenty of time allotted for NPH’s trite sexual double entendres.

They didn’t cobble that number together at the end of the show…I was there for the dress rehearsal and NPH performed it then too.

  • TicketMediaGuy

I enjoyed the Sushi/Jeremy Piven jab.

I love NPH as a host, in fact, I love him in everything. What a talented guy and the final song was great. But they should have known that Jessica Lange has no sense of humor.

  • Rebecca E.

I loved NPH, but I have to say that there wasn’t nearly enough of him. I could have done without the Legally Blonde and the Mamma Mia performances and more of NPH.

I loved NPH, but there wasn’t nearly enough of him. I could have done without the g-d awful Legally Blonde and Mamma Mia performances and a hell of a lot more from NPH.

i’m with rebecca e. it’s obvious the economy has hit broadway hard and there aren’t as many shows – dramas or musicals running to fill the show. the answer was to try to pull in the audience across the country by reminding us of the traveling companies, but no thanks, i’ve seen jersey boys. don’t want 2 see mama mia or legally blond. the show missed a smart $$ opportunity by not showing the traveling companies of color purple and wicked which are selling out.
which is why i liked last yr’s show over this yr’s show. this show contd 2 show how ‘white’ our society is. when will ‘god of carnage’ and ‘norman conquest’ choose the actors and not think it has to be an all white cast? when that is done, u will see a higher % of people of color spending their hard earn $$ on creative arts, which they support when they connect with AND feel it respects them back.

  • MK

He’s so wonderful. How about a show starring him and Hugh Jackman? That’s one I’d go see just to see two stellar song and dance men performing. Too much Mama Mia and West Side and Billy Elliot was too long…and all that grunting was annoying. I wanted to gag the kid. Other than that some great moments: Angela Lansbury, Frank Langella, Hair, Liza…

  • hannah

NPH was flawless (except when they were running out of time for the commercial breaks – not his fault). The show itself definitly had some problems. The sound issue was annoying – the number of movie celebraties wasn’t too great. I think a lot of shows picked the wrong songs to show case their talent. Shrek, West Side Story, and Billy Elliot didn’t help themselves at all.

  • Lyn

He was OK, with a persona that suited the proceedings. What was with the early dig at Constantine Maroulis???

  • Louisa

    I thought NPH was awsome!!!

  • reeNebraska

Loved NPH as host! Great numbers from Rock of Ages and Hair. I can’t stop watching either one off my DVR. I keep going from ROA to Hair. Billy Elliot didn’t impress…and I really wanted it to.

  • Patti

I don’t think that was a dig at Constantine as much as a high five for his success in Rock Of Ages – in the form of a joke. To be highlighted like that at an event like this is priceless. It was rehearsed, btw. He thinks Rock Of Ages kicks ass, so he had no reason to diss Constantine. Btw, viewership was up 18% over last year. It had been declining for years. And Live Theater is the epitome of entertainment – particularly the musicals.

  • Kay

He reminds me a lot of Ryan Seacrest. I kept expecting a shot of one of the AI judges to pop up through out the night.

  • Tom

A new career for NPH. Ranks w/ Hugh Jackman for MC abilities.

  • Bitty

I think the most boring act were the Billy’s. OMG how did THAT get nominated for a Tony? Children twriling chairs and having a fit on stage. huh? And then BEFORE they were announced they were getting up to go on stage and collect their award. Not known until it’s announced? Yeah, right!!
