Tonight’s Tony Awards broadcast promises more than its share of drama and suspense — not all of it scripted. Will Billy Elliot sweep the musical categories? Will Liza Minnelli beat Will Ferrell for Best Special Theatrical Event? And will host Neil Patrick Harris manage to get through the evening without breaking into song — or referencing Dr. Horrible?
Join Thom Geier, your viewing companion, who will offering illuminating insight and astute commentary throughout the broadcast, and Tanner Stransky, who will be tweeting via our EWPopWatch Twitter stream from his perch backstage.
You’re welcome to comment on the broadcast on our message boards, or, if you have a particularly pithy sentiment to share with Thom and our audience, feel free to type it into the text field built into the widget below. We’ll selectively publish user comments throughout the night.

Hooray! It’s the biggest night of the year for theatre geeks like me, and no matter how frustrating the committee can be or how confusing some of the snubs are, you can always count on the Tonys to put on a great show! Wouldn’t miss it for the world!
Sorry about the quadruple post. But I guess everyone’s used to it by now, right?
I MIGHT watch only to see NPH. But I don’t know if I can watch the whole thing.

I am a huge theater geek.
And the fact that I will not be able to watch them live is depressing enough.
The fact that I will have to wait 2 weeks to watch Haydn Gwynne beat Karen Olivo (crossing my fingers!) is almost excruciating. ):
I’m torn. I wanna support the Tonys AND NPH, but I feel awful reinforcing the terrible trend of snubbing the design categories and more and more of the Play awards from the CBS broadcast, and for what? More numbers from TOURING productions. LAME. You don’t see them doing that at the Oscars (Sound Editing? Sorry, not enough time, but here’s another interpretive dance!) I love the numbers, but I really only think nominated shows (and the HOST) have any business performing.
Sitting at home watching on my computer as two morons try to be witty while they write about a live event that I could be watching, but I’m not, because I’d rather keep my attention focused on two morons blogging about it and killing comedy in the process…. sounds like a great time.
These EW live blogs are all the same – two people trying very hard to be funny – and who think that they are funny – but they are not. Give it up, already – it just does not work.
Wow Gale, what did the live blog ever do to you! I on the other hand can’t wait and look forward to some witty insight on what is sure to be a great show. Even if you don’t like broadway, Dolly is performing!

Gale and Ricky – and yet, you commented. You could have shown you actually didn’t care and ignored the article, and yet . . . you didn’t. Some people do enjoy live blogging, and you don’t. So don’t read it. However, you DO enjoy not making fun of, but rather, condescending and spitting on the people that do enjoy something that you don’t. I’d rather read someone try to be funny than someone try to be better than the people writing/read the article. Arrogant self-aggrandizing pricks the both of you. Go do things the way you want to and stop picking on us for wanting a fun little communal experience.
Dr. Horrible is a better musical than any of the garbage nominated this year.
Love the Tony’s, but perhaps they should have made sure the sound would be up and audible… The opening numbers were quite good, once the glitches were worked out.
Poison? Brett are you OK?
Amazing opening number. There is nothing like live theatre….
That was some of the worst lip sinking ever. Look up Bertt!

i was at the tech rehearsal this morning i have the complete order of the presentation tonight presenters, performances etc. if anyone wants to check it out feel free. become a follower!
That was a big let down for me Brett.
I think the blog is great. I was planning on watching the actual program however there is bad weather in the area and tornados north of me and the program is being interupted for weather coverage. I got to see half of the opening number… so I happen to like this live blog!
Anyone else DVRing “Any Dream Will Do” and “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?” on BBCAmerica tonight?
I was going to watch, but when Jane Fonda come on and I switched to 60 Minutes. Being a US Veteran i still remember Hanoa Jane.
Did anyone else see Brett Michaels get knocked down ont he set? Can’t be good.
…was on the ’set’ the day that Natalie and Baymer were ’shooting’ the Maria Scene and the Director was all shook up and Nat wasn’t too friendly with Dick!
I think it’s difficult to capture the true essence of a broadway production in a two to three hour TV show.
This is really a terrific idea to engage the Internet audience into a discussion about the Tony Awards. I teach digital journalism and this is a growing trend….that we call participatory journalism.
I’m surprised they didn’t cut to Gandolfini during that number…
Are they lip-sinking? I think rock of ages and billy eliot was real but I’m not sure about the others.
I think it’s amazing that Liza Minnelli continues to win Tony Awards. She’s terrific.
If you can appreciate good acting and singing, the Guys and Dolls actors did a good job capturing a snippet of that producing in three minutes.
FIRE THE DIRECTOR FIRE THE PROP MASTER; ESPECIALLY FIRE THE SOUND ENGINEER. And by the way, Natalie Wood was miscast in the first place for Maria. I don’t think this one could be more white. Giant mistake.
Wow! Mic emergency, bumbumbumbumbum buuuuuuuuum, Neil Patrick Harris runs in and saves the night! I love it.
