Those of you who’ve read the reviews for Sam Mendes’ new dramedy Away We Go — or maybe even saw it on opening day yesterday – know that Maya Rudolph is something of a revelation in it. As one half of a directionless, thirtysomething couple searching for a place to drop their roots before the birth of their first child, Rudolph gives a wonderfully quiet, sincere performance that, to quote my colleague Owen Gleiberman, “anchors the quirkiness of Away We Go and transcends it, too.” It’s quite something to behold the former SNL powerhouse who once bellowed “GET OUT!!” as Donatella Versace convey leagues and fathoms of emotion with such economy. John Krasinski, who plays Rudolph’s partner and baby daddy, is terrific, too. But for me, the movie’s all about Maya. So please join me in applauding the brilliant and beautiful Ms. Rudolph. When you’re done with that, enjoy this SNL clip from 2007, in which she stops by “Weekend Update” as Whitney Houston. Cocaine brownies! Can I get a what-what!

I am sooo happy for Maya. I think she is wonderfully talented and am happy to see she is getting well-deserved praise. She was my favorite SNL cast member for years and has been somewhat overshadowed by the other talented ladies (Fey, Poehler, Wiig) since her departure. I’m glad to see she’ll have a bright future in both drama and comedy.
I saw a screening in Boston. It is a really great movie and I highly recommend it to any one, even if you don’t like Krasinski or Rudolph (I don’t know anyone who doesn’t, I’m just saying.) Not only are they perfect in their roles, but the supporting cast is phenomenal. The movie is hilarious and it has heart and it is the perfect movie and is now in my top 5 favorites of all time.
The reviews have been mostly negative but I’d like to see the movie anyway because of Maya.
What? I never found her funny on SNL, and her cameo on the season finale proved it.
Yes! I’ve always thought Maya was BRILLIANT! Her SNL tenure was incredible, filled with so many characters and great impressions. She’s been so underrated, and I’m glad she’s getting a chance to show off more sides of herself
I am looking forward to this movie with some trepidation. Although I love John Krasinski in THE OFFICE, the movie I saw with him & Robin Williams & the little guy was truly awful. I liked Maya Rudolph on SNL & since she is the daughter of Minnie “Lovin’ You” Riperton, I believe she comes by acting, mimicry & singing honestly. I am hoping that “Away We Go” lives up to all the hype & good reviews.
There was nothing about this movie that was not wonderful. I saw it for John, but Maya was an unexpected, understanded, funny and heartful delight.
On SNL, Maya was funny, versatile, and (maybe to her credit) just under the radar. I still chuckle to myself when I think of her as one half of Gemini’s Twin, or Donatella Versace. Also, she has a great singing voice that we never heard enough of.
To Flim I say (respectfully)- it’s too bad you can’t see how talented she is.
Oh please, nobody was singing her praises before. Now everyone is a fan all of a sudden…jump on the bandwagon much? Yeah, she was so talented in Idiocracy. (last sentence dripping with sarcasm)
Was that comment supposed to be sarcastic? She WAS awesome in Idiocracy, that movie is one of my favorites ever, in addition to being 100% spot on. “Ow My Balls” will be appearing on a local TV near you any day now.
“I’m gonna get you Bobby B.! ALL RIGHT!” She is one of my favorites. She should convince her hubby to put her in one of his films.
Flim, you don’t know a thing. I’ve ALWAYS been a fan of Maya. She was my favorite cast member during her ENTIRE tenure, and I was so bummed she left.
LOL, you are so full of it. Favorite cast member…Yeah, I remember reading all about how people couldn’t wait to tune in to see what Maya was going to do next on SNL….bunch of slobering kiss asses.
Film, what the hell are you talking about?
Okay, you got me. Since apparently you’ve spoken to every single SNL fan to ask who their favorites were since you know that ‘nobody’ was singing her praises.
You don’t know anything. Maya had her fans. I know because I was one. And sorry, you can’t tell me I wasn’t when I know full well I was.
