Edie Falco is awesome. This we know from six glorious seasons of The Sopranos (may it rest in heavenly gabagule peace), her hilarious (and dare I say, too short) turn on 30 Rock, and pretty much every other bit of acting the three-time Emmy winner has ever done. Her new series, Nurse Jackie, premieres Monday night at 10:30 EDT on Showtime, and critics (including EW’s own Ken Tucker) have been heapin’ on the praise. It’s well-deserved, of course. In the pilot alone (which is already available online), Falco does some masterful work as the titular RN, a tough, loving, and lovable woman who presides over the emergency room of a New York City hospital that’s full of whackjobs (natch). Falco inhabits Jackie thoroughly, with nary a trace of Carmela-ness. And no, not just because she’s shed the Big Jersey Hair in favor of a close-cropped ’do that’s just a few inches short of a buzz cut.
In January, I was lucky enough to visit the Queens, NY set of Nurse Jackie, where I not only got to watch Falco perform a juicy scene with her longtime friend and costar Paul Schulze (yep, the same guy who played Father Phil on The Sopranos), but also witness with my very own eyes and ears the actress’ famed humility. I wanted to ask her how it felt to be, at long last, the star of her own series, but I’d barely uttered the word star when Falco winced—literally winced!—and said, “Ehhh, I hate that word. I hate it so much and I don’t go there. I’m not cut out for that part of this [i.e. acting] at all. I’m the wrong person for this to have happened to, in a way.”
Now, lots of actors claim to not care about the glamorous side of the biz, and just as many bend over backwards trying to cultivate a “down-to-earth” public persona. (“I’m real!” insisted J. Lo. Yeah, right.) But when Falco says it, she's truly believable. Getting gussied up for a red carpet? Seeing her name at the top of the Nurse Jackie posters? Fuhgeddaboudit. “That does not feed me,” she said, shaking her head. “Who has the time? The hair! The makeup! The jewels! I don’t know. Some people are really cut out for that stuff. I get a kick out of it more than I used to, but it’s not something that I relish.”
So between her talent and unassuming nature, I ask you, PopWatchers: How can anyone not adore this woman?

I wish Ms. Falco success with her new show. She is a very talented and gifted actress. But I have to admit, I miss her very much as Carmella Soprano and the Soprano series. Good Luck Edie!!!
i will definitely be watching. and I too miss Carmella
How indeed? LOVE LOVE LOVE Edie Falco, and will definitely be tuning in to “Nurse Jackie.” As I think I’m on my 8th On Demand tour of “The Sopranos,” it’s obvious Falco’s been off the airwaves waaaaay too long.
The character she plays is entertaining enough, but what’s the point of glorifying an impaired nurse? She plays an addict trying to manage her profession through her use of powerful substances. What kind of example does this set for young people looking towards a profession where life and death decisions are carried out. I would not want “Nurse Jackie” coming anywhere near me…Someone please tell me, what is the premise of this show?
DUH..Doll you just gave a brief summary of the premise, Silly. It’s a very well written and executed show!
Love her! I can totally hear her voice saying those quotes too!!
Nurse Jackie seems a little like House, with all the pill popping but I like Falco, so i hope this show succeeds. Between Falco’s “Nurse Jackie” and Jada Pinkett Smith’s “Hawthorne”, nurses are getting some shine this summer. Oh yea, um, Chris Sullivan, as a current medical school applicant I can assure you that people looking to get into the healthcare field are smart enough to tell fictional tv from fact. i mean, really.
I saw some of the previews for this show and I still see Edie as Camella. I too miss the Sopranos. My favorite Carmella moment is when she throws Tony out. She acted her butt off in that seen. She had the best facial expressions on the Sopranos along with Paulie and Silvio. I miss that show too.
I thought the pilot was brilliant. Since I absolutely thought The Sopranos was unwatchable garbage, I’m thrilled to see that it wasn’t the actors. Falco is brilliant in this role.
Love her. She was great on The Sopranos and I’m happy to see her again. She was terrific on 30 Rock, and I thought the pilot for Nurse Jackie was great. Not just another hospital show.
watched the pilot and i’m hooked and on board. great show, with great characters in an environment that is interesting and not written too too depressing.
One of the best actresses in television history.
Great show. I got a chuckle seeing her get nailed by Father Phil. Loved when she flushed the ear after yelling into it.
As for J-Lo. What a total phony. I’m just Jenny from the block, my ass. It’s that fakeness that resulted in her losing her career.
Thought is was a great show. But why the theam from ‘THE VALLEY THE DOLLS’?
It needs a much more up beat song , something of it’s own!
Great show…but needs a theam song of it’s own.Not the theam from ‘THE VALLEY OF THE DOLLS’. Something more up beat , not old and dated!
