ShePop: An ode to Gay Best Friends

After watching the clip below, I'm feeling a little bad about calling my closest homosexual male companion "my gay" with some regularity. Sorry, it's quick and simple and it makes the point…but apparently it's also totally make-funnable, I admit. (Though my gay happens to be even better at fixing stuff than giving fashion advice — take that, stereotypes!) Anyway, I'm loving "That's Gay," the new close homosexual male companion to Sarah Haskins' "Target: Women" on Current TV's infoMania … Enjoy:

What do you think? Are you over the Gay Best Friend character? Who's the best GBF on TV? I think I'd like Scotty from Brothers & Sisters to be mine.

Why is it always the women that have gay best friends? Does this mean as a straight guy, I get to have a lesbian best friend? Someone really stereotypical who I can talk sports and tools with? Come on TV, make it happen!

Hey Todd. I like the point you bring up. I’m writing a television show of my own set in high school and there’s definitely going to be a straight guy who is best friends with a lesbian girl. It’s going to happen. Just be patient.

I liked that video, although I disagree on one point – it’s not gay men who are dipicted switching teams on TV, it’s always the hot, straight girls going gay! Grey’s Anatomy, House, even back to Buffy…
I have a good friend who’s gay, and while we share the (rather gay) love of Project Runway, otherwise, we usually just eat a lot and hang out.
I think it’s true that a lot of straight girls want a gay friend as more of an accesory. Lots of my other girlfriends have met my gay friend, and they instantly act as though he’s their friend. It’s trendy, which is really creepy, when you think about it.

There already is a hit webseries about a straight African American guy and a lesbian. ANYONE BUT ME.
