The New York Daily News reported today that Shia LaBeouf has signed on to star in The Associate, the adaptation of John Grisham's latest best seller. So is the author happy with this news? Of course, considering he hand-picked LaBeouf himself! "I think he'll be wonderful!" Grisham has told reporters. "He's a very talented actor, and he's hot. He's the hottest 22-year-old actor in America."
First of all, I have to say, that is one very specific, very definitive, very creepy statement, Mr. Grisham. But is the author a secret Even Stevens fan, or is he correct in thinking that LaBeouf could easily fill the shoes of actors like Tom Cruise, Matt Damon, and Matthew McConaughey, all of whom have starred in Grisham adaptations in the past? LaBeouf has been riding that "next big thing" wave for a few years now, and he has earned enough acting accolades from critics to balance out his tween heartthrob image that comes from starring in films like Transformers. Plus, he has raked in a pretty penny for studios, between that robot movie, Disturbia, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I, however, just can't see it. Maybe it's impossible for me to look at this 22-year-old actor and not think of him as a slightly stretched-out version of his 12-year-old Disney self, but I've had a hard time enjoying LaBeouf in anything but Holes and his SNL MacGruber sketches. Let alone considering him "hot."
I'm sure I'll eat my words eventually — after all, this is coming from someone who claimed that people would tire of Britney Spears after she released her "Sometimes" sequel. But do you think LaBeouf could maintain a career like Cruise, Damon, and McConaughey have (or, at least, did for so long)? And if he does, in which direction would he go? Blockbuster star-turned-couch jumper, thoughtful award-winning actor-turned-action star, or perpetual shirtless star-turned-…perpetual shirtless star? Finally, is LaBeouf indeed the hottest 22-year-old actor in America?

I just don’t get Shia LaBeouf as an action star. Maybe he can pull off a John Grisham film, but nothing where he’s supposed to be hot. He’s a good actor, but I don’t think I’ll ever see him as a manly man.

I think he’s been awesome in everything he’s done so far so I can’t see him disappearing any time soon.
I think Grisham meant “hot” as in “hot property” or “hot box office” or somesuch. Not “hot” as in “jump his bones.”
I think Shia LeBeof is just being shoved down our throats. Get a few more roles under belt first, kid.

No, he’s the next drunken idiot who will amass 12 DUIs and be in rehab by 30.

Is anyone else having major issues using this new posting thing?!
I do think he will be the next Tom Cruise (pre couch jumping). He transformed from a funny looking kid to a very handsome man. The ONLY bad thing he has going for him is that he’s so freakin short. Otherwise that boy is one of the best looking guys in showbiz, next to Ibris Elba.
It’s Idris Elba.
I think his future is definitely one of the brightest of the young male actors. He’s taken some fairly diverse roles (didn’t he play a mentally handicapped child at one point?), and, judging from a few interviews I’ve seen of him, it seems like he’s hardworking.
I view Shia as the next Tom Hanks. He represents the common, everyday person. (everyman)
I hate the new way to post coomments.
That out of the way – I can say that one Tom Cruise is enough with his manic intense everything and couch jumping included.

I don’t know many 22 year-old attorneys. You mean to tell me that this character graduated from college, law school, took the bar, and got hired by the time he was 22. Love the authenticity Mr. Grisham.
But hey, he might sell some tickets…MIGHT.
Definitely think so! He’s been absolutely fantastic in everything so far. He makes it seem so natural, and I never question once whether he could’ve played something better. I mean, have you seen A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints? Tons of cussing, interesting editing/directing choices, but totally worth it. And Shia is absolutely killer in it. So I can definitely see him being the next Tom Cruise – but pre-couch jumping, as someone else said.
Kate Ward, do you have a clue? When he says “hot”, he isn’t referring to the man’s looks’, he is referring to his bankability at the box office. Hollywood is all about “heat”. And to think that EW pays you to write for it (!) Your job should go to someone more deserving.

Shia’s been good in everything I’ve seen him in. I think that Grisham meant that Shia was hot in the “he’s a big box office draw” sense, not the “causes women to faint” sense. Even though the latter is true too.
Just saw him yesterday at the Chelsea Market in NYC. Boy he looks like a tiny little nothing. He’s so slight. But he does have a “look at me” look in his eyes.
Shia is NEXT “TOM CRUISE”? LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TRY NEXT TansXXX former “American Idol” BOZO.

“Is LaBeouf indeed the hottest 22-year-old actor in America?”
Yes. He’s the hottest (and most talented next to Jamie Bell and Anton Yelchin) young actor in America. Period.
I don’t think Shia will be the next Tom Cruise, I believe he will be bigger. His past films have given him the building blocks to be one of the GREATS! and maybe this role will show the world just that.
Everything about him is HOT!
I think Shia is an extremely talented actor who has starred in mediocre films but has the potential to be the greatest actor of his time. I also think a look from him could melt the panties right off of me, regardless of the fact that he is 22 and I am 35.
