'Star Wars: The Old Republic' game spot: George Lucas wishes he was hot like this

Hot on the heels of the Beatles: Rock Band trailer comes this dark, awesome nugget out of E3: A spot for the upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic game. And this may actually be the best two minutes of Star Wars footage I'VE EVER SEEN.

It's amazing what you can do with this universe once you pry it from George Lucas' hands.

Where does this rank for you? Do you, like me, wish you could trade the Clone Wars stuff for a TV series that looks like this? Or am I overselling it a bit? (I'm not, but you're entitled to your opinion…so long as it agrees with mine. Welcome to the Dark Side.)

    Woah…that was awesome!

  • Mitch

Awesome. It does make me wish that there was a Star Wars series that aimed for a more adult audience than Clone Wars. It would have been nice if George had let others write the prequels too.

  • Auriana

It looks great! Too bad its an MMO. Don’t get me wrong, I love MMOs. I just can’t afford to play them. Still the only news so far out of E3 that has me squealing at my desk was the Golden Sun DS announcement.

  • Amy

Holy crap! I’m soo geeked out!!! Completely agree with Mitch.

I am having palpatations!!! That is it. Mr Lucas is officially banned from his own creation. I just wish we could go back and undo some of Mr. Lucas’s past mistakes, ie Jar Jar, making good actors into wooden facsimiles, and too much tinkering with the origionals. Right now I find myself wishing I still played video games. Damn, that looks good.

If George Lucas had put as much effort in the last 3 movies as these people have in this game, it would have been an awesome series…

  • Ceballos

Forget actually playing the game…I would watch 2 hours of THIS.

  • Big Daddy

    Wow!!! Fantastic!!!!

Same here Auriana. As beautiful as those cinematics look (and they put Lucas’s prequel material to shame), I can’t invest into an MMORPG. Forget the cost. I just don’t have the time. Besides, after hearing far too many MMO horror stories, I’ve grown an aversion to the genre. Too bad, because this looks excellent.

Is the guy in the hood Vader?

  • J.

That looked better than all of the prequels combined.

  • alex

So, let me get this straight: Star Wars-haters complained because the prequels looked too much like a video game cut scene, and then a Star Wars video game cut scene of comes along – and it’s what you wanted all along?! Maybe you guys should stop with the incessant Lucas-bashing and formulate a coherant thought once in a while (I’m looking at YOU, Marc Bernardin) – just admit that you had terrible, depressing childhoods in which Star Wars was the only thing that brought you even an ounce of joy, and that the new movies only reminded you of how worthless your lives have been to have obsessed over something so trivial – you’ll feel better.

  • Charles

Holy Smokes! I don’t play video games, I’d just love to watch that as a movie. Not being a Star Wars expert I don’t know the mythology and timelines. But if that is Darth Vader without his usual helmet it is an excellent and exciting new take on his character (one of my favorites). If not, it’s just another really cool evil guy. MAKE IT A MOVIE!

  • ashley

Omg!! THIS LOOKS AMAZING!!! i would love to see a tv show based on this- a show for ADULTS!!!

  • jptech

This is “the old republic” it takes place several thousand years before episode 1. The guy in the hood, I assume, is Darth Bane.
And, you’re not overselling it. This is what we all wish “the clone wars” was like. A show for the fans. Not a show to hook 10 year old kids into buying more toys.

    • OSR23

No, if u know who darth bane is, yet u assume this is him, you are a disgrace to star wars EU, this was set somewhat 300 years after the events of star wars knights of the old republic video game series, darth bane lived 1000 BBY, This game is set, i think its 3700 BBY, long before Bane’s time

    • Andrew

its not bane in the hood. he wouldn’t have so many sith with him. if you read the lore then you know bane is all about the rule of 2. one master and one student. so i really think that is darth malak again.

    • clonwrs

I actually think the clone wars are pretty cool

  • MikeS

this totally looks amazing. I been doing MMO’s since the late 1990’s I just hope that bioware offers everything they promise by the time it launches.

  • Pete

What I think we’re all responding to is that this video is amongst the first that REALLY taps into Jedi potential. Combine that with amazing graphics, and a darker (and more serious) tone = this is one of the coolest sequences i’ve seen in a long time.
And yes…they should make another animated Star Wars and hire these guys to make it.

  • Anne

Between this and the new Indiana Jones game, it seems that Lucas should have given his script to video game writers to make his movies. These new games are so much more exciting and relevant!

  • Marc Bernardin

Well, Alex. I didn’t hate the prequels because they looked like videogames. I hated them because they sucked.

  • Haters are pathetic Sheep

Yawn – I did not even have to read the article to know there would be tired prequel-bashing. Love or hate the prequels (I love them), no one can deny that Lucas created the Star Wars Universe and that the original trilogy was and still is a landmark achievement that to this day ranks as the most successful franchise ever when adjusted for inflation (that means that SW sold waaay more tickets than dreck like the Dark Knight and the Sam-loves-Frodo trilogy back in the day – hell, adjusted for inflation Episode freakin’ 1 made more money than any of the garbage out in the past 10 years!), and the true hatred of Lucas comes from the fact that he has become successful enough to operate independently from hollywood and still deliver 4 films in the past 10 years that all made $300-$400 million each, and that’s just domestically!
“George, EW wants an interview – the studio can’t force you to talk to them to promote your film so it’s your choice, but they may choose to bash you as a result”

Lucas’ response: “I’ll take that risk”.
Repeat with all other media outlets save the few he will deal with, and a cycle is born.
You haters really are pathetic. Your inability to let go of your hate goes against all of Yoda’s teachings, and as he lectured, leads to suffering – suffering in that you are expending so much energy spewing immature bile over what, at the end of the day, is nothing more then 3 of 6 movies that are an homage to the old B-Movie sci-fi serials of the golden age of cinema.
If you hate the prequels so much, then just move on – but you can’t can you? Just like a pathetic ex-girlfriend, you cannot make a clean break, you just have to keep on clinging and criticizsing because you cannot accept that Star Wars has moved on is doing just fine without you. Both of my Nephews love Star Wars, prequels, #1 rated CGI Cartoon, and all. Other friend’s children always ask me questions about Star Wars. I’d say the franchise does not need you anymore
Get a life and a clue

  • t3hdow

Alex and Haters, please don’t start another fanboy fueled feud. Lord knows most of us are still reeling after that Clone Wars popwatch thread nearly a year ago.
I enjoyed Revenge of the Sith, despite its weaknesses, and some parts of Episodes I and II are still pretty cool. Still, despite my forgiving tone towards the prequels, they really could have been a lot better if the scripts and directing was as focused as the original movies.
The problem with Lucas nowadays is that he’s lost his spark, and he’s only re-doing old franchises to make money. That’s the only reason the recent iteration of Clone Wars exists. Gendy Tartovosky’s version was good enough. There’s no need to make another one.
And, if Gendy T. and Bioware (the creators of Knights of the Old Republic videogame) prove at least one thing, it’s that the creator isn’t necessarily the greatest judge of his own work. Gendy T.’s Clone Wars and KOTOR’s storylines are excellent in comparison.

  • alex

T3hdow, I’m not looking to start a fight (I haven’t read this infamous Clone Wars thread brawl), but I just find it excrutiatingly tedious when I read hyperbolic pablum like, “This 2 minute video game lightsaber orgy is what the prequels SHOULD have been”, especially from an someone like Berardin who supposedly prides himself on being a lover of Character and Story (and who, incidentally, cited 3 lightsaber duels as the only prequel-moments worth mentioning in his top 15 Star Wars Moments piece last year – I guess Lucas must have done something right in that department!) It smacks of overindulgent fanboy whining and I’m tired of indulging writers who encourage it.
(FWIW, I also DESPISE the use box office totals as a barometer or a defense of a film’s quality)

  • jj

awesome. best two minutes i have ever seen. youare right. a bunch of sensitive little babies on this talkback.
