Susan Boyle on 'Britain's Got Talent'finale: What the heck should she sing?

Filed under: Television and tagged: , ,

Boylepiers_lDespite the fact that Britain’s Got Talent judge Piers Morgan told Inside Edition that frumpy singing standout Susan Boyle threatened to quit the competition, and the news that she lashed out with profanities at reporters, Boyle will still be at tomorrow’s finale. Singing, hopefully.

But screw that mess with the press and any other Boyle Rumor of the Day. Shouldn’t we all be focusing on the talent, the voice, the presence that Susan Boyle brings to the stage? I think so.

Earlier this week, when I was on the phone with BGT judge Piers Morgan, I asked him what she should sing in tomorrow’s finale. Without missing a beat, he said: "I would do ‘I Dreamed a Dream’without any question." But can she repeat the song? "She can," he added. "And I think, if I were her, I wouldn’t even hesitate because that is her anthem, that is what the world loves her for. And that’s what she’s best at singing."

But, I continued, asking Piers for his professional judgly opinion, wouldn’t there be backlash? Doesn’t that seem like a lazy move? "No, no, no, it doesn’t work like that." And then he reminded me that season 1′s Paul Potts did the same thing, singing the operatic "Nessun Dorma" for both his initial audition and in the finale, which he won.

But let’s assume she does do something we haven’t seen before. And I’m gonna assume she’ll stick with the West End/Broadway theme. How about "Think of Me" or (screw the fact that it’s a song for a male character) "The Music of the Night" from The Phantom of the Opera? Or Evita: "Don’t Cry for me, Argentina" or the song Madonna added to the 1996 movie, "You Must Love Me"? Those would get my first votes.

Or, something else? PopWatchers, what do you suggest Susan Boyle sing on tomorrow’s Britian’s Got Talent finale? Should she just stick with "I Dreamed a Dream," like Piers says?

Journalists are cruel people. I am so tired of Susan Boyle being characterized a frumpy.

  • BLT

i’d like her to sing something by Barbra Streisand….like the theme from “The Way We Were”.
Go, Susan, Go! We love you in the States and can’t wait to buy your CD!

I think she should sing “Climb Every Mountain.” It would be in keeping with her story so far and be inspirational which is what we love about her. Good luck Lady Susan!

  • Holly

I love to listen to her sing “I Dreamed a Dream” but I also think it would be interesting to see what else she can do…

it’s a shame that show doesn’t slim down the number of contestants and actually let the true talents perform a bit more (though we don’t need another Pop/American Idol).
With that, I’d like to see Susan sing some pop contemporaries and add her classical flavor. Why not sing the Justin version of Cry Me a River or something a la Duffy/Winehouse.
If she sticks to Broadway – let’s here something from Into the Woods.

Susan Boyle will not win Britain’s Got Talent
    Date: Friday 29th May 2009 18:00 hrs
The sensation that is Susan Boyle is predicted not to win Britain’s Got Talent tomorrow night (Saturday 30th May).
Russell Grant’s platinum psychic Mr George Valentino (www.russellgrantpsychics.co.uk), announced today that the adorable singing sensation will hit the states with a lot of fame – but will be way too much for her to cope with long term.
Susan has been battling with depression for sometime now, she is out of her comfort zone and she will be as famous as Elaine Page – but short lived.
George Valentino is one of the most sought after and busiest psychic mediums on the Russell Grant network. George and the management team of Russell Grant Psychics have invited Susan Boyle to have a confidential reading with the star psychic – without his advice he feels she will suffer badly, wh

    Don’t Cry for me Argentina!

  • Ammie

“Cry Me A River” gets my vote. She does this wonderfully.

  • Tricia Goeb

I absolutely adored her audition rendition of “I Dreamed A Dream” and it took weeks to get out of head…but I would love to hear her sing “Don’t Cry for me Argentina” which is another amazingly moving song which she would blow out of the park!! Hooray…Susan

  • Lynn

Whatever works for her! Not all songs are made for the same person…so whatever she can belt out like she did the first and second go round. I hope she wows the world.

PLEASE DO NOT QUIT SUSAN. YOU HAVE A GIFT FROM GOD AND IT SHOULD BE SHARED. I AM SURE YOU MIGHT BE SCARED OF ALL THE CROWDS BUT WE ARE ALL IN AWE. I WOULD REALLY LOVE TO HEAR WHAT YOU WOULD DO WITH THE SONG “THE LORDS PRAYER”. i HAVE AN IDEA IT WOULD BE OUTSTANDING. I LOVE RELIGIOUS MUSIC AND THAT IS ONE OF MY FAVORTIES. MY MOTHERS WAS “THE NINETY AND NINE” WHICH IS NOT EVEN AVAILABLE ANYMORE BY TENNESSEE ERNIE FORD. JUST AS I AM & THE OLD RUGGED CROSS ARE AMONG A LOT OF MY FAVORITES. KEEP YOUR CHIN UP AND PLEASE DON’T EVER STOP LETTING US ALL HEAR YOUR VOICE FROM GOD.

  • Anissa

“Think of Me” is a light soprano song and would not fit her voice at all. Either Evita would be good but also something like “With One Look” or maybe the quieter song “As If We Never Said Goodbye” (both from Sunset Blvd) though I’m guessing she’ll go big and bold w/ a strong belt…

  • westward ho

i think she should continue along the same lines — take a moving ballad from a famed stage show that seems to be a self-reference, as “i dreamed a dream” and “memories” did. my nom would be “the impossible dream” — because it’s from, of course, “man of la mancha,” and because, if she wins the show, well, it WILL be the culmination of her impossible dream, won’t it? and it has that same kind of power to it, that moving, heartbreaking reach.
