They’re dolls. In the shape of meerkats. Made of knitted yarn. Dressed up like Star Trek characters. Any questions?
Wait, I have a few. Who knits meerkats? What do meerkats have to do with Star Trek? Why was it important for the maker to note that the meerkats "wear Federation emblems (not yet a communicator)"? If the meerkat in the photo is supposedly Bones, "administering a trioxide compound to Jim Kirk who is hyperventilating after realising Uhura prefers Spock", then why isn’t he even looking at Kirk? And why is Uhura standing idly by? I’ve read that meerkats exhibit altruistic behavior, but this sure isn’t convincing me. And where did Uhura get her little bling box? Do they have a Zales kiosk on the Enterprise?
Go ahead and leave your responses in the comments. And don’t forget to answer the biggest question of them all: Would you actually buy this?

Well she stood idly by when Spock damn near killed him so why should she help now.
I think I might… I have a trekie (excuse me, treker) brother in law who isn’t feeling great. This would either make him laugh, or angrily toss them against the wall, thinking I was wasting his time. (He’s a touchy guy, but it might be good anger-management therapy.) Which goes to show, you never know who will buy this crap, but it’s worth a website to find out.
Um, Kirk’s uniform is gold and Uhura’s is red. Also, why the Enterprise-D in the background. Okay, that’s enough of my geekiness.
I love meerkats. And I love Star Trek. GENIUS.
Zales is everywhere, wouldnt doubt if the enterprise has a Zales store they are awesome. They have a commissary, bar, full hospital/sick bay, gotta have a Zales and probably a Starbucks.
To quote Shatner: “Get a life, people!”
But Ben, we did, and this is it!
This is when it pays to have a best friend who knits. She’s not a trekkie like me, but she’d make a couple if I asked for these little guys for christmas.
Crazy genius, indeed.
Why was it important for the maker to note that the meerkats “wear Federation emblems (not yet a communicator)”?
Because starting in ST:TNG the emblem was a communicator. In original recipe, they used what looked like cell phones, which is what I think Uhura is holding. (Letting my geek flag fly!)
WOULD I?? I just bought her last Spock as a birthday gift for my hubby! This will beat his Lego Spock, hands down!!
The pic is actually Bones administering to a typical red-shirt crewman (ie. dying). There’s another pic on the website of him and Kirk (wearing traditional gold). But, they’re $35 each… for a bunch of stuffed yarn. My wife has probably already ordered it.
Someone had to knit them, so it might as well be me
Clear now? ROfL http://www.niftyknits.co.uk
It’s Kirk *idly standing by*, he *is* in gold (photo isn’t showing too well!) and he is indeed holding a communicator. Bones isn’t looking at the patient because, being a meerkat, he’s also having to look for predators. And the bit about administering trixide to Jim goes with a complettely different pic
The Star Trek Meerkats are as impressive as ever!
And I simply have to ask, what could possibly be better!!
You bet. They are such fun and in these tough times a smile is sometimes THE best medicine!
NifyKnits is a genius, what more can I say?
Not only would I buy them for me, but I would give them as gifts to all the “Trekkies” I know. They are fabulous and so full of personalty – much like the “Nifty” lady that knitted them!! “Beam us up!!”
These are fabulous! To Nifty and her Meercats: Live long and prosper!
Of course I would buy them for those trekkies that love anything to do with Star Trek! These would be a classic collector item, IMHO!
I think they are great!!!
Can I have one of Pike? In a little wheelchair?
Better yet, Meercat Manor needs a whole new spin-off with characters named Kirk, Spock, Sulu, Uhura, Bones, Chapel, etc
Meerkats because the platypus prototypes kept coming out irregular and the Mudskipper dolls’ fin-arms couldn’t be trusted with trioxides. Do Zombie Star Trek or Vampire Star Trek though…and you can wallpaper your parent’s basement in loot!
I’d buy one. They’re cute.
I was totally grossed out by this headline! I thought the whole “knitting meerkats” comment was a disgusting slur to describe the Spock/Uhura hook up. I was just thinking that popular slang had reached a new low until I read the article. My bad, apparently I have a dirty mind! Still, I hope “knitting meerkats” doesn’t end up on Urban Dictionary; last thing we need in this world is more euphemisms for the art of making tender Vulcan love.
