'The Real Housewives of New Jersey': Should we hate Danielle?

Daniellestaub_lThree short weeks into The Real Housewives of New Jersey, and the ladies already have a scandal on their hands. (Oh, don’t act like you’re shocked!) At the end of Tuesday night’s episode, Bravo teased next week’s installment, in which the women discuss Cop Without a Badge, a book that supposedly features juicy information about the show’s divorcée, Danielle Staub (mug shot included!).

Well, lucky for Real Housewives fans, the New Jersey Star-Ledger got a hold of the book, and printed an item about the info tucked inside. The highlights? The book tells many stories about a Beverly Merrill — the woman who is supposedly Danielle — a stripper who Badge author Kevin Maher claims partied with a drug dealer who kidnapped a rich youth. (Maher claims Merrill was charged with extortion, kidnapping, and possession, but was granted only five years probation after pleading guilty to extortion.)

So there it is, out on the table. The question now is, is this true? According to some Amazon.com reviews, the book shouldn’t necessarily be trusted. But whether or not there’s any validity to the claims, it’s fair to say that Danielle will have to cope with this kind of notoriety for some time. And you know what? I feel bad for her. Although the divorcée is being set up as this season’s villain, what with her shady past and inappropriate tendencies, I think we really haven’t given her a fair shake. Yes, she’s pitiful. And yes, she’s annoyingly self-centered. But the lady appears to be a good mother — how many other housewives can claim they spend quality time with their children every single day (ahem, Luann)? — and does try to be fair when it comes to her friendships.

Of course, I could be partial, considering every single one of New Jersey‘s five women fondly reminds me of someone in my own South Jersey family. And in support of her opponents, if Danielle does have this many skeletons in her closet, why would she sign up for a reality show that has no problem airing its stars dirty laundry? Who is that desperate for attention?

But in the end, Danielle will likely have the last laugh, because there is no such thing as bad publicity when it comes to these women. She could take this notoriety and easily turn it into a Danielle-branded handcuff company, TruCrazy.  But what do you think, PopWatchers? Does this news make you pity her, or revile her even more?

    What about her eyebrows?!!!

I feel like she is so not the villian in this season. She is annoying, clingy and like that, but not evil. In fact she is like the nerdy girl that wants so much to hang with the “cool” girls and they just won’t let her in. Dina is the villian, as far as I can tell, and a good one. She is funny as hell and oozing with “mean girl”- ness.

They are trying to make her the villain this season, but she hasn’t done anything to deserve that title yet! I mean, I didn’t know not getting along with someone who blatantly makes fun of you in your own home is cause for being the villain of the show. So far, all I feel is pity for Danielle. If you ask me, Dina seems like the villain so far….

It should be easy to verify the book’s claims – a quick record search at the court where she entered her guilty plea should show what she was charged with and what she pleaded guilty to. As for hating her or pitying her – neither – she’s annoying, but I don’t hate her, and she’s living a pretty nice life, so I’m not sure why I should pity her. Like all of us, if she made a mistake she has to own it – doesn’t mean she can’t change, doesn’t make her a bad person, but you can’t undo your past.

Turns out she really was arrested in connection with the kidnapping mentioned in that book – so at least part of the book is true. A quick search of the Miami Herald from 1986 shows 2 articles (June 24 and Sept. 12) referencing Beverly Ann Merrill and her association with the incident.

Don’t like the show, I miss the NY girls. Danielle does seem to be an ok Mom, but bringing strangers to the house from an online date svc? I like Dina even though the daughter is a brat but the rest don’t interest me at all. And it’s too bad, I really tried to get into it.

I haven’t seen any evidence that she’s a “good” mom, and just because she says she spends quality time with her kids everyday doesn’t mean she’s actually doing it!
I feel sorry for Danielle because she is obviously clueless, either because she didn’t know her past would be revealed or that she thought it wouldn’t matter.
My favorite thing about the Housewives franchise is that it proves money doesn’t buy class. These broads are something else.

How about we just hate ALL of the “Real Housewives” shows? All these shows teach us is that all it takes to be famous is to marry rich guys, act stupid, and hate every female within a 5 mile radius. Talk about setting the women’s movement back 2,000 years…

    • Lydia Dugan

You have said the definitive word on these housewives shows. Nobody could sum it up any better. They have set the women’s movement back 2,000 years. They serve only as a bad example.

  • Cee

Can’t we just hate ALL of them?

FWIW, here’s pics from this week’s episode of Real Housewives of New Jersey: http://www.bravotv.com/the-real-housewives-of-new-jersey/episode-3-not-one-of-us
Also, photos of Caroline’s son Albie, the future lawyer, who seems like the most level-headed person on the show: http://www.bravotv.com/the-real-housewives-of-new-jersey/albie
And, in the interest of something-for-everyone, his brother Chris, the future strip-club/car-wash mogul.

oh yeah, she’s a really great mom! she sold her children’s emotional well being for her 15 minutes.

Yeah I completely agree. I feel like nothing more can be said.
