Comic book shocker!: Archie proposes to Veronica

Categories: Comic Books

Archiecomics600_lAnd we thought Brangelina vs.Jennifer was shocking. Archie Andrews, the beloved, freckled protagonist of the Archie comic books has been roiled in a romantic love triangle for the past 67 years between blonde, pretty, girl-next-door Betty Cooper, and rich, spoiled, brunette beauty, Veronica Lodge. It always seemed, to me at least, that Archie’s heart and future lay with Betty, and that Veronica was just a fantasy, an infatuation. But lo and behold, in issue #600 of the Archie comic, arriving in comic book stores in July, Archie proposes to Veronica in a jewelry store, while a tearful Betty and dazed Jughead look on. Which prompts this epic question: What the hell is Archie thinking? Seriously, he can’t possibly afford Veronica’s lifestyle on that temp-worker income of his, and she’s going to make his life miserable. He’ll always be falling short of her expectations. Betty, meanwhile, loved Archie just as he is. The lad is making a foolish, foolish error, and he’s clearly thinking with the wrong part of his anatomy. But what do you think, Popwatchers? Did Archie totally blow it, or is Veronica such a babe that she’s worth the drama?

I always thought Archie was a loser and he deserved to be Veronica’s b*tch. Betty was far too good to him, always accepting Veronica sloppy seconds whenever Veronica was unavailable or dating Reggie or whoever guy showed up. I’ll say this, when I was 14 I read one Archie comic where Betty got fed up with Archie’s crappy treatment of her and ended up hooking up with Reggie. It was at the end of the comic book and I was beyond thrilled, because I always thought Betty should be the one being fought over. She’s everything you could want in a girlfriend. Here’s hoping they finally end this triangle once and for all and Betty ends up with someone good … no scratch that … a billion times better than Archie Andrews.

    The fool! What about Jughead???

Hopefully this is just part one of a multi part issue where Archie wakes up to the wonder that is Betty. Of course he belongs to her and she to him. Veronica and Reggie are the two spoiled brats who deserve each other while Arch and Bet live happily in Suburbia.

I always liked the redhead. If you’re going to go for trouble go for trouble, ya know?

  • Serena

It has always been Archie & Betty. The boy next door with the girl next door.
Maybe Betty will end up with someone who is charming and loves her who she is.

  • AK

NOOOOO!!!! Hopefully this awful idea will be over by issue #601. Obviously, this love triangle had to progress at some point, but not in the wrong direction.

Finally! I know how spoiled Ronnie is and although I had always related more to Betty, I’ve always held a soft-spot for Veronica. Even when she made mistakes, she usually tried to right them. I don’t know, I always liked her as I grew up reading the comics. I always felt she was misunderstood and needs Archie to straighten her out :D

i echo everything that stephanie said. i’m part of the minority that prefers veronica. however, since most of the public prefer betty (her character was obviously developed to be the more likeable one), i’m sure archie proposing to veronica is not the end of the story. it doesn’t mean they’re getting married. i think archie will still end up w/ betty in the end.

  • Captain Canuck

Hey c’mon people. These are tough economic times. Can you Blame Archie for taking the sweet benefits of becoming a Lodge?

  • Stephanie

KG, yeah I also have a feeling that in the end Archie will break it off with Ronnie. It’s kinda sad because really, Veronica has always been the one stereotyped- rich, spoiled, no-good. I always felt she was the underdog, and that’s usually who I root for. :D Betty is nice but, if memory serves, was always dependent versus Veronica who was independent and that I most admired. She has her flaws, but who doesn’t?

  • KR

    What!?!?!?
Betty’s too good for him anyway. The jerk treats her like crap.

  • Moon Mob

Oh please, this is just a ruse. They’re ENGAGED, they’re not MARRIED, they haven’t gotten there yet, so relax people. There’s plenty of time for drama to unfold and for Archie to change his mind, yet again for the 500th time. It’s like a soap opera, the strength of the comics seems to solely rely on the characters trading partners like clothes. BTW, doesn’t anyone notice how this mirrors the Brad-Angelina-Jennifer love triangle? The guy chooses the vixen brunette over the good-hearted blonde.

  • jamesTkirk

Veronica is probably better in bed, but Betty probably wouldn’t nag you to death.

  • James

    Team Betty

  • Crystal

You know Veronica will cheat on him in a second if they DO get married…

  • derek

C’mon folks, this isn’t new news. Back in the early 90’s there was an Archie comic called ‘To Riverdale and Back’ (that was later turned into a tv movie, with Lauren Holly as Betty), in which the gang is all grown up and at their reunion. I seem to recall Archie had/was been married to Veronica, Jughead had a son, Madge was now a supermodel, etc.

  • Koolio

    LOL. NERDS.

  • alhkia

    uhhggg…….thats awful…
i like betty more…and they look much better than this two……whatever!!!lets just see what happens..perhaps a twist will occur….(crossed-finger)

  • NYCGirl

Poor Betty. Though, really, she deserves someone who doesn’t view her as second-best.

  • Calla

Well, I think it is more like Lost than Brangelina. Damn Kate wins every time. Hehehehe But like Juliet, Betty deserves someone who she come first for and doesn’t have to compete with anyone else.

  • Ray Gilmore

I think that instead of taking a press release from Archie Comics at face value, people who are really interested in this (all 5 of you) should have no fear in regards to this 6-part storyline (issues 600-605).
Trust me, based on information presented at the New York ComicCon a while ago, Betty will get her due in issue #603.
My eight-year old daughter is a Betty fan, and would not have forgiven Archie had he chosen Veronica.

  • Snarf

I think it’s a reflection of the way people act. We always want what we can’t really have…

  • Moxie

I haven’t read Archie comics in yeeeears! But I was always on Team Veronica. Like Stephanie said, I always saw Ronnie as the underdog…like if they reeealy got to know her, got past that hard shell, they’d see how great she could be. Everyone always looooved Betty. :::yawn::::. I guess this could explain my disdain for Bevery Hills 90210’s Kelly Taylor and my utter LOVE of Valerie!

  • Shane

Arronica rules!!! LOL! I was always on Team Veronica too- Betty, I thought was going to do some sort of crossover and hook up with Peppermint Patty. & to the person who mentioned LOST, I concur but in an approving way- I HOPE with all my heart that we have seen the last of the annoying-as-watching-paint-dry-with-about-as-much-soul relationship of James and Juliet. It made me throw up in my mouth every time I watched him strip away his character to be with this most boring of all women. I hope things work out for Archie and Ronnie.

  • The Crosspatch

    Brunettes do it better.

  • Princess Bleh

As a kid, I always thought Betty would be better off if she were somehow able to awaken Jughead’s hetero side and end up with him. Archie was always a jerk to Betty and single-minded in his obsession with Veronica. I always wanted Veronica to end up with Reggie. And Archie alone b/c he is a d-bag.
I don’t think this story arc will end with a Verchie marriage. Or with a Betchie one, either.

  • Courtney bubbles

I completely agree with princess bleh. I think that she’s said it all. And I also hate archie and he only wants veronica for her money. Her dad even hates him. He would never allow their marriage. And it can’t end. It’s so good

  • Tommy

Good choice, Arch. Betty is a psycho. Veronica has a good heart.

  • whatcha

Poor Betty. Wasting all those years on that wimpy loser. But when you think about it, pickings are pretty slim in her town. Who else does she have? Jughead? Reggie? Moose? She’ll just have to move. It’s the only solution.
