'Bad Lieutenant': Best worst trailer of the year so far?

The news that Werner Herzog was remaking Abel Ferrara’s 1992 controversial cop drama Bad Lieutenant with Nicolas Cage in the Harvey Keitel role raised a lot of questions. First among them: "Why on earth is Werner Herzog remaking Abel Ferrara’s 1992 controversial cop drama Bad Lieutenant with Nicolas Cage in the Harvey Keitel role?" Don’t get me wrong. Herzog is among my favorite directors. Indeed, it is the originality of his style and vision that makes it so odd he would do a remake like this. Also, as the man is hardly synonymous with boffo box office, who would have thought it was a good idea to give him the reins rather than someone like Tony Scott? The decision of Nicolas Cage to step into Keitel’s shoes is less surprising. After all, he thought remaking The Wicker Man was a good idea! One person that definitely did not agree with this project was Ferrara himself, who told Filmmaker Magazine Herzog could "burn in hell."

A trailer for Herzog’s Bad Lieutenant just hit the Internet and, well, I’m not sure what to say really. Yes, it looks terrible. But in a way that really, really makes me want to see it. There’s just something about a crazed, wildly overacting Nicolas Cage smoking crack and depriving an old woman of her oxygen supply that somehow adds up to a must-watch as far as I’m concerned. Or it’s possible that I may have gone completely insane.

Take a look and tell us what you think.

I’m one of Herzog’s biggest fans. I have everything he’s ever done.
With that being said, this looks asinine. An absolute farce.
I had doubts about this project, but this trailer is just about as bad as that ‘Wicker Man’ montage that was floating around the web for a while.
And yes – I agree. It looks horrendous. But I can’t wait to see it. Nicholas Cage acting moronic for two hours is entertainment at it’s finest/worst.

There is no way to duplicate the power and raw emotional experience that was the original Bad Lieutenant. This remake is a waste of time and money.

I feel like the movie is trying to be a comedy. Where is all the turmoil and conflict of the original? And I think it’s said in the trailer it’s set down south, which was a stupid move because one of the best parts of the original was the grit and character of NYC. I still might go see it though, if only to see just how bad it can be.

I’m not going to dismiss it out of hand, since Herzog is a much, much better director than Abel Ferrara. And if it’s terrible? Cage has been known to elevate terrible material before (Vampire’s Kiss).

Uhhh, this can’t be a ‘remake’ – there is a heck of a lot of plot shown in this trailer and it matches almost nothing in the original. Clearly this should be referred to as a ‘sequel’. Otherwise i agree with everything written here – looks incredibly awful and i cant wait to see it.

    This screams “Straight to DVD!”

So how is this a remake again??

  • Jerry

    To quote HIMYM’s Barney…”Awesome!”

I am just glad that Nicolas Cage keeps making cinematic turds like this because it keeps him out of movies starring other actors I might actually enjoy watching! He has been nothing but an embarrassment to watch for nearly 20 years.

    I’m torn about this.
On one hand, there’s the part of me that SO believes in Herzog’s talent that I just have to believe that he’s made the intentionally insane/funny movie we’re seeing in the trailer. I mean, Herzog HAS to be kidding right? Why else would you put comedy veteran Jennifer Coolidge, notorious bad actress Eva Mendes (“Ghost Rider” reunion!), and pair Nicolas Cage with Val Kilmer to see who can act more pudgy/over-the-hill/off-the-wall while sporting awesomely bad hair.
On the other hand, the godawful “Wicker Man” remake was directed by Neil LaBute. LaBute didn’t have the body of work Herzog does, but he was certainly a respected director. Maybe Cage’s new mission is to ruin respected indie directors’ reputations.
The one thing I’m not torn about: this is NOT a remake. It’s got nothing to do with the original, other than having a buckwild lietenant running around causing trouble.
By the way, I kinda can’t wait to check this out…on DVD.

  • I think

    big stinking pile!

Why don’t you do research before writing articles? It’s not a remake.

  • Chris

Haha… watch Nicolas Cage ended up getting an Oscar nomination for this. This has ‘COMEBACK ROLE’ written all over it.

  • Tyre

I don’t even have to watch the trailer. My theory of bad hair piece, bad nic cage movie continues to be proven!
