Kris Allen: How can you not love the new American Idol?

I was chatting with my colleague Kate Ward yesterday about American Idol‘s season 8 champ Kris Allen, and she expressed concern that the underdog troubadour might get hit with a backlash from fans who feel he "stole" the title from his good friend and Idol runner-up Adam Lambert. But check out Kris’ appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (embedded below) and riddle me this: How could anyone dislike this low-key charmer from Arkansas? I mean, the guy is on his freakin’ victory tour, admits to only having had two hours of sleep, and yet within the first minute of his appearance, presses pause on the interview and insists that the audience "give it up for Adam" — who’s not even in the room! Combine Kris’ extraordinary class and charm with a heaping portion of talent — doubters, I must insist you immediately check out the studio rendition of "Falling Slowly" — and I’m betting he can overcome (or perhaps even stave off) any negative repercussions of his win. What do you think? Take our poll below, then sound off in the comments section!

I’ll start saying that I’m a huge Adam fan and have been from the first moment I heard him, but I absolutely adore Kris. Every time he speaks I like him more. He just seems like an all around nice guy and a class act. I wish him and Adam nothing but the best, they are both talented and nice people.

i really like him…and how could he ‘steal’ the show?
more people voted for him… the end.
it’s probably better for adam that he didn’t win, anyway.

I love Glambert’s professional posture, but watching Kris just hop around from interview to interview being himself is really refreshing and fun to watch. No matter how hard the press seems to be pushing him to act like a star, he just kinda shrugs it off. I was pretty shocked that he won, but the more I think about it the more pleased I am that he did.

It’s not about liking or loving him…it’s about talent…so I don’t get your article…Kris in my opinion was not the best talent, his type of music is a dime a dozen….

As someone who has always been a Kris fan, I’ve been kind of shocked and saddened by some of the hateful things being said about him, especially by a certain British judge. (His interview with Ryan on “On Air” was inappropriate at best and completely disrespectful at worst.) I think Adam and Kris are equally talented, just in completely different ways. It just came down to the fact that Kris’s music is a little more current than Adam’s. To say he isn’t talented or won’t do well is to, in my opinion, completely misunderstand the current music industry.
And really, I’m so happy that both guys seem to be genuinely nice, happy for each other, and incredibly deserving of all the success they are about to have.

Hey, I wanted Adam to win. but in no way I’m mad at Kris. I’m mad at the voting public…but not Kris.
Last night on Leno, we saw some personality out of the guy. And it was great. We barely saw that on Idol this season.

I loved both contestants. Could we have asked for a better final 2? Well, maybe Alison could’ve been there, haha, but still. I would’ve been happy had either guy one. Kris seems like such a great guy. I really hope they both get the success they deserve. They’re incredibly talented.

It’s great to watch Kris being the centre of an interview, unlike previous ones where “the other one” constantly hogged the airtime. A very charming, humble and talented guy…I wish him all the best for his career.

Kris is a class act, both him and his wife! I am glad he won! And I am glad his wife is the first, first lady to American Idol. I hope they are abundantly blessed as they propel into the future.

I am a huge Adam Lambert fan but I also like Kris. You really can not compare them musically. Its like comparing Robert Plant to James Taylor, I love both and depending on my mood I will listen to one or the other. I do think Adam is the better singer, But as far as nice kind decent people they both are. Kris as Adam says great guy and I wish him all the best. Great interview with Jay

i noticed kris from the get go and picked him out as a winner. beautiful singing voice, sings with deep emotion, nuance and subtlety, knock out original song arrangements, plays guitar & piano, humble and modest with great charm and personality, love to watch him dance…was amazed the judges didnt single him out. I like adam a lot too. but thrilled that kris won, without help from the judges too, or very little help from them. he’s very very popular. it’s obvious why! those who cant see why i just don’t understand. hope he turns out to be a good songwriter, too, then he’d really just about have it all!

  • S

I love Kris! He’s just such a likable guy. I feel bad that he’s going to have to deal with all the vitrol that will come his way for beating Adam. He already seems like a natural star during that interview. His wife is a very lucky woman!

  • Sarah

Nan, to me the point of this article was that, though people are upset Adam lost and blaming Kris (and saying some pretty horrible things about him and his fans), Kris seems to be a really great person. Whether you like his style of music or not, whether you agree he should have won or not, I don’t think you can hate him based on his personality. I think the same goes for Adam. We were so lucky to have such a great top 2.

  • Patty

I don’t think anyone has ever had a problem with Kris. The Adam fans have a problem with the people who voted for Kris because they hated Adam so much. Adam has been such a good sport, not stooping to their level. So, that helps soften the blow for me. Otherwise I am very sad that America rallied up against Adam. Kris does not have the talent/ appeal of Adam. But, they are both nice guys. Kris will have a decent career. Adam is already an Internationsl Superstar. Kris knows it and so does America.

  • Abba Dabba

I love Kris. He not only sings music that I want to hear and buy, he is also a great guy.
