'American Idol': Who won the final showdown? Kris or Adam? (Or was it a draw?)

Categories: American Idol

"No Boundaries": Is it a rad new clothing line for skater bois and girlz? (Ugh…did I just type it like that? Yes.) A proposed slogan for Princess Cruise Lines’ upcoming Alaskan Adventure Journey? Or a warning label that should’ve been slapped  below the fourth unopened button of Simon Cowell’s shirt this evening? Alas, Idoloonies, we all know the correct answer is "none of the above." [West coasters: Beware of mild-to-moderate spoilers!] Alas, "No Booundaries" proved to be yet another hairball of an American Idol victory anthem, this one coughed up by judge Kara DioGuardi and a couple of cowriters (including early ’90s pop chanteuse Cathy "Toxic" Dennis)? The song did "no favors" for season 8 finalists Adam Lambert and Kris Allen, making one sound unexpectedly shrill and the other intermittently exhausted. The telecast’s remaining four performances ("Mad World" and "A Change Is Gonna Come" for Adam; "Ain’t No Sunshine" and "What’s Goin’ On" for Kris) probably didn’t do much to move Idol viewers from their previously established fan tranches, and as for me, I can honestly say this is one season where I’ll truly be happy no matter which finalist comes out on top. But, since I’m paid to have an opinion, I’ll just say this: I enjoyed Kris’ performances, as a whole, just a teensy bit more than Adam’s tonight. But I think, taking the entire season into account, Adam will (and probably should) get the confetti shower at the Nokia on Wednesday. Of course, my opinion is subject to change between now and the wee small hours of the morning, when I will post my full TV Watch recap. Until then, do share your first impressions of the performance finale in the comments section below. And don’t forget to join me tomorrow night at 7:30 for a raucous, rockin’ American Idol season finale live blog. Oh hell yeah, it is ON!

    Adam deserve to WINNNN!!!!!

  • deez

A fitting ending tomorrow would be to declare a second place tie so that neither of these men has to sing that song.ever.again.

I boycotted the show tonight and won’t be voting. I was disgusted by how many blogs and newspaper columnists went ahead with their culture war, Red/Blue state, They Represent Two Different Ways oF THINKING, material, obviously written for the expected Gokey-Lambert final and, like a Supreme Court battle, too late now to halt the talking points. Kudos to you, Slezak, for not going there. And for disliking Danny for entirely other reasons. From the recaps apparently the performances tonight were closely tied, but I think Adam would wear the crown of Idol better than Kris. Still don’t change the fact I prefer Kris’s style of music, but Adam was born to be an idol.

It was an underwhelming night to say the least, capped off by an awful song co-written by Kara.
But judging by the whole competition, Adam should win.

  • PPott

Adam should win. But I still miss Allison!

KRIS totally owned it tonight! Ain’t no sunshine was a shoe-in and what’s going on, was pure KRISSALISIOUS! No Boundaries, not the best song for both of them to sing. How did this song get through, it was not riveting at all, Kara no props for you. Besides Kara no one really commmented on the song and the performances just on their journey to the finale, that says it all really, but KRIS SLAYED TONIGHT, HE HAS GOT MY ZILLION VOTES THAT’S FOR FRIGGIN’SURE!

No one could make “No Boundaries” sound good. It ruined an otherwise perfect showdown.
I want them both to win.

    adam’s take on change is gonna come is the most buzzed in the internet now! c;

i enjoyed kris more the whole season
however I do agree i dont mind who wins
although Id love to see the smile and surprise on kris’ face when ryan announces his name and see his parents and his adorable wife’s expression come on you can’t tell me you wouldn’t wanna see kris’s adorable family’s reaction to him winning. and it’ll be the perfect underdog story and it’ll be like throwing salt in the producers wounds.
that being said I don’t mind who wins :P

The artist that Kris is going to be was clear from the moment he sang “Man in the Mirror” during top-36 week. He’s shown week after week that he can interpret and deliver a heartfelt and genuine performance each week. Truly, I am excited about hearing his record; he should wear the Idol crown for being a true original.

  • Debbie

I agree that Adam should win, but I’ll be happy with either one. They both have stellar careers ahead of them.

  • druzilla

The winner’s song is so bad co-writer Kara asked people not to judge Kris on it! How crazy is that?!
I enjoyed Kris more than Adam tonight but neither offered a “WOW!” moment. Neither of those guys deserve that song as their debut sing.

  • Miriam

I thought that “A Change Is Gonna Come” was the best single performance of the night. But, I would say that Kris did better overall for the night. Over the course of the season, however, I agree with Slezak that Adam deserves the crown.
That coronation song sucked MOUNTAINS, Kara. MOUNTAINS.
