'Star Wars': Happy Birthday, Chewbacca!

Tags:

While my colleague and fellow Star Wars drooler, Marc Bernardin, regards May 19th as a glass-half-empty kind of day, allow me to introduce a sunnier note. A long time ago, in a galaxy very much like our own, Peter Mayhew was born. That’s right, "The dude inside the Chewie suit" turns 65 today!

And while I have no clue whether or not Harrison Ford bothered to send the gentle giant a card from Hallmark’s delightful Shoebox collection, perhaps the rest of us should take a moment to watch the wonderful Wookiee at work and send Mayhew our best wishes.

Chewbacca is dead. Sorry to break your heart. He died in 1999 when the book, New Jedi Order: Vector Prime was released. 10 years folks!!

Mayhew is a jerk! I was in Houston once about 7 years ago and saw him at a Hooters (don’t ask). I wanted a picture with him, so I waited, and waited and waited until he was done his meal. His entire group was done, they had the bill on the table, so I took my chances. I walked up, was polite (and nervous) and asked him nicely for a picture with my camera. He immidiately yelled at me “Can’t you see we’re eating?!?!? Get lost!!” I was humiliated by Chewbacca! How embarassing! I saw him at a convention the next day charging $20 for photos. So i walked up to him, took a picture, and said “I’m not paying you $20 for that!” and walked away. He was not impressed. Victory, was mine. TRUE STORY.

I’ve met him at a few conventions. It’s not so much that he’s a jerk. He’s just a lil’ bit retarded.
