I like the original series best. Have you seen the Star Trek bloopers?

Lori, you may be right. For whatever reason they recast the captain, it turned out to be lucky — I’m fairly sure Jeff Hunter was dead by the time the series premiered. But they definitely reshot the pilot because the network had problems with it. They didn’t like the female Science Officer, among other things. Roddenberry, however, did like the original pilot, and that’s why they did The Menagerie — so they could use most of that footage. I’ve seen the original pilot in its entire, unaltered state, by the way. It was still pretty great. Different, but great.
BTW, “Where No Man Has Gone Before” is also one of my faves. They introduced Sulu and Chekhov (later) as a result of that epi. The Gary Lockwood character had Sulu’s job, and I think he killed the guy who had Chekhov’s job. I remember the scene where Kirk brings Sulu up from engineering and emergency promotes him.

To Susan: Jeffery Hunter (Original Capt Pike) was still alive when the ST-TOS series premiered but died a few years later (in 1969). From what I gather, Jeffery really didn’t want to continue the Capt. Pike role and wasn’t available when the second ST pilot was done.
Oh and y’all might want to check out the ST-TOS (Star Trek, The Original Series) Remastered sets. These are the original episodes with new CGI special effects remastered in. This eliminates the old clunky 1960 era effects and really makes the show worth watching.
IN the upcomping Blu-Ray editions of ST-TOS, you get both the original and remastered editions of each episode.
