I absolutely loved it! I am totally hooked
To quote Lillian Adler, “By its very definition, Glee is about opening yourself up to joy”. What joy! And what subversion too, a brilliant slap at the mousified version of High School Musical, erm, clubs.
One little quibble, if you or I had a girl with Lea Michele’s talent in our high school, she’d by respected (if begrudgingly) no matter how big a freak she was off stage. As for the comments bagging on Jesalyn Gilseg, I thought she did well with what she was given, as did the rest of the supporting cast. Give the writers time, it was just the first episode, not nearly long enough to plummet the depths of the secondary characters. What they have explored, wonderfully, is the inescapable sense all high schoolers have that they might be losers, might not matter, don’t know how they will fit in as adults. And the inescapable truth that it doesn’t get much better in adulthood. All any of us can do is pursue our glee. I’ve already set my DVR for the full season.
I absolutely loved it. The promos have been nonstop so I my interest was piqued, but it was better than I thought it would be. Loved the characters. I teach middle school and many of my female students kept talking about it today and singing “Don’t Stop Believing.” I think they’ve got a winner.
