'Lost': Is it safe to talk about the finale in public yet?

Lostjackkate_lI’ve just been reprimanded twice for bringing up Lost. Five days after the finale. At Entertainment Weekly. And I hadn’t even watched it until last night! As soon as I said the word "Jacob" I got shushed with a wretched "AGGGGGH" sound effect and then an even harsher "Zip it." Honey, please. My intended complete sentence was the exceedingly harmless "I’ve been thinking a lot about Jacob’s facial hair," so get off my back.

Enough is enough. If you get spoiled at this point, I say you had it coming.

What’s the longest you’ve waited before watching a piece of major event television? Is it safe yet at your office?

I DVR everything but still manage to watch important episodes that night or the next at the latest. I’m tired of people whining about spoilers. If a show is that important to you, I’d think you could get around to watching it sooner.

  • BeckyB

Times up, folks! With appointment tv like LOST, you do whatever you can to watch it THAT NIGHT! Your friends should give you a one day forgiveness period – after that FORGET IT! It was the season finale, for Pete’s sake!! If you haven’t watched it yet, you’re not a real fan anyway – barring imprisonment or coma, anyway!

  • Kacey

I’m not a ‘Lost’ watcher, but I have been shushed twice today when mentioning Thursday’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ finale.

  • Sean

    Annie -
I am still getting the “SHHHH” from people. It’s American Idol’s fault really. How dare they counter program with people?! The DVR has made us a nation of casual viewers and not appointment TV anymore. Any decent person would have watched LOST right after American Idol ended… like I did (blush). But 5 days is to to long! I say it has to be watched by Saturday or all bets are off.

My girlfriend just got season one dvd’s and started watching them last night. She is on episode four……so I will not be able tot talk about it for quite some time.

  • KL

Everyone had the weekend to watch their DVRed Lost finales. You had your chance to watch the episode. Now it’s your fault if you get spoiled.

  • Sue

Sorry – Once the weekend is over, all should be free to discuss. Most people get Saturday and/or Sunday off, and there is plenty of time to squeeze in 2 hours for a show that aired days ago. Even if you work Sat. or Sun., there is usually nothing else to watch, so it’s a great time to catch up. Spoiler-free zone be damned – fire away!

  • izikavazo

I think we should talk about shows the day after, that way people are forced to watch live TV, like they should.

  • Dave

Sean, any decent person would not be watching crap like Idol to begin with. As far as the finale goes, give people through the weekend that follows and then it’s fair game. A lot of Game 7’s last week, and you really can’t DVR sporting events to watch days later.

oh if only i had an office where people were cool enough to even watch lost. are you guys hiring at ew?

On Thursday, a non-Lost-watching-co-worker of mine said she tuned in for a few minutes of the finale (I missed it when it aired on Wednesday night), and she said there were “some people called the others, and a giant foot.” Luckily she did not drop any spoilers, but she did feel really bad when I said I hadn’t seen it yet.
Of course, I have seen it by now, and it was AWESOME!

  • John

Unfortunately, I was “that guy” with the LOST finale . . . I had it taping and started watching at ELEVEN THAT NIGHT. People were already posting crap on Facebook and Twitter! I try to watch it as soon as I can (I work at night and don’t own a DVR), but c’mon, at least give me a day people!

  • Ailene

I would say a two day grace period is okay, like with Lost…if you hadn’t seen it by Friday, well thats your problem! If its a finale, you would think you’d be looking forward to watching…and not leave it for five days! That’s way too long.

  • Jay

Yeah, the Lost finale is fair game at this point.
Anybody who hasn’t watched it yet either cant watch it, doesn’t care about it, or doesn’t have time to watch it in the first place and will probably not see it for months.

  • Kristen

I had a co-worker yell at me today for mentioning the “Everybody Hates Chris” season (series?) finale parodied the finale of the Sopranos..cause he hadn’t seen the Sopranos finale yet. AI, The Office, and HIMYM are the only shows I watch immediately, everything else can wait.. and I have no problems reading/hearing spoilers. I cheerfully read about who dies on Smallville even though I probably won’t get around to watching the ep for another couple of weeks.

  • DVRme

When I came in on Thursday there were signs all over a coworkers desk saying “do not talk about Lost”…..and he added a few on my desk since I blew the previous week when I said to someone else “so twitchy is dead huh?” and he over heard it…I felt bad….but another coworker and I said lines subversively all day…he will know why I handed him the candy bar when he watched it…but today…no rules and we will talk all about it.

  • LisaMama

Totally fair game at this point.

  • Laura

Yeah, it is totally ridiculous to shush people 5 days after the Lost finale aired. Give me a break, you are not a fan if you haven’t watched it yet. 5 days (including a weekend!) is more than enough grace time. Let the spoilers commence!

  • Mike

I’m sorry, but LOST is appointment TV. If people are unable to watch Wednesday night then it is up to them to avoid the websites and chatter around the show. People need to talk!
Annie, if you need to chat about it you can come here! lol http://www.lostaddictsblog.com (any excuse for a shameless plug!)

  • Lori

I’m sorry, but an event as momentous as a Lost season premiere or finale – if you haven’t watched in 24 hours, you deserve to be spoiled. This is serious stuff – you don’t get a week to give flowers to your wife for your anniversary! No difference with Lost.

  • Dana

    John Locke, best character ever!!!!!!!!!

  • Natalie

LOL I just watched it last night too! I felt on top of the world… ready to enter the workplace and start talking about the phenomenon that is Lost after I sent an elaborate email to my colleagues detailing my thoughts and conspiracy theories (nice to know that Doc Jensen and I share some of the same thoughts) but I was immediately told “can’t read your email yet.. haven’t watched. Thanks for putting spoiler alert in the subject line!”
    Grrrrr arrrggghh.

  • Josh

I agree with what seems to be the general consensus – you get a 1-day grace period and then you’re on your own. If you cared about it that much, you should’ve watched it then. Thanks to grad school, the only shows I watch the same night they air are Lost and Idol. I love House, but being so far behind means I’m going to hear some spoilers. Do I like knowing beforehand that Kutner’s going to kill himself in a few episodes? Nope, but that’s my fault for waiting so long.

  • Kiki

We had to extend the grace period because tornado warnings cut out the middle 3rd out here. Finally got to see it all yesterday!

  • K

Lost, Bones, and House–all ruined for me this year by spoilers without the phrase “spoilers” being mentioned in advance. The Kutner thing was everywhere and unavoidable, but Web sites mentioning “Juliet’s sacrifice” and Booth’s memory loss without notice were not cool.

  • Amy

I too have been thinking about Jacob’s facial hair???

  • Rod

SPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t watched it by now, you’re not that big a fan.

  • Liz

You should have a 24 hour grace period. There was a LOT of TV happening this week. I did not appreciate having both ANTM and Smallville ruined for me by 8:00 AM the next morning.

  • Heather

It’s not safe for me. I was trying to ease an awkward silence with a friend of mine by saying “So, I can’t believe Faraday died.” Cue in the shock, the yelling, and whatnot. Apparently, he was only at the episode when Charlotte died.

  • Kess

My husband and I had to wait until Saturday night to watch it together. Just when we thought we were in the clear, avoiding this website among others, our pastor brings up the finale during his message just hours before we were to watch it. AAAARRRRGGGHHH! Still completely enjoyable though….
