'Nine' trailer: All the single ladies...and just one guy

The first trailer for Rob Marshall’s star-packed song-and-dance explosion Nine (in theaters this November) is finally out, and it’s a whole lot of something. Music! Costumes! Is there a plot? Who cares!

The movie — an adaptation of a musical based on a play based on Federico Fellini’s classic 8 1/2 (whew) — features Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Fergie, Kate Hudson, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Daniel Day-Lewis, Sophia Loren, Marion Cotillard, and, apparently, enough hairspray to fill an oil-freighter. The first few seconds are calm: The lighting is low, a bell tolls nine times, Judi tells Daniel that directing a movie is easy. Then someone starts singing: "Beeeee Italian…" and we’re off. My attempt to liveblog the clip is as follows:

"Who’s singing? Fergie? Uh oh, Nicole looks a little Stepford. The movie’s in black and white? No, it’s in color. Hi Fergie! Marion is laughing. Daniel isn’t. Big sets! Big numbers! Kate Hudson looks fantastic! Holy….Can Penelope really do that with her leg? So many ladies and just one man! Everyone with bouffants! Sophia Loren, now with 60% more cheekbones! Oh, it’s you again, Judi. Aaaaand we’re out."

Honestly, I’m worn out just from watching the thing. But you can bet I’ll be first in line for this movie when it comes out. I love a good musical, and even if this one ends up being as nonsensical as this trailer implies, it still promises the kind of energy and razzle-dazzle and good old-fashioned oomph that you rarely find these days outside of a Beyoncé video.

What about you, PopWatchers? Does the Nine trailer get a 10?

10? That number is too small for the awesomeness of this trailer. I’m assuming Marshall is gonna approach this like Chicago and have the musical numbers in a world separate from reality. Or probably just have all the singing and dancing happening on soundstages that Contini is filming on.
    God this looks awesome.

Marion is so captivating. I’m so glad she’s in this. Can we figure out who is singing? Cuz if it’s Fergie…impressive!

  • Lynny

    That is def Fergie.

  • Laurie

    Looks AMAZING! I can’t wait!!!

  • K

That look amazing. I’ve been sitting on pins and needles waiting for this trailer — by far one of my most anticipated movies, and it didn’t disappoint. If the movie is anywhere as great as this trailer…
    WOW

  • Kath

Holy crap, if that’s Fergie singing it’s the most talent she’s shown in her entire career.

  • Amy

I’m freaking excited, love love love Daniel Day Lewis!

  • Susan

Hopefully, people will be able to differentiate between this and the post-apocalyptic puppet movie. Luckily, that one is being released in September.

    FANTASTIC I’M SOLD

hey Adam your forgetting the biggest and best thing about this: It’s Daniel Day Lewis. The man is God and the greatest actor ever. He said that unless the script is great then he doesn’t do the film so don’t even worry about how good its going to be or the plot it will be fine if Day Lewis signed.

Once again Rob Marshall takes a musical that people have decided is “unfilmable” and gives it a concept that makes everyone smack their heads and go “of course!” Cast looks dynamite. Can’t wait to hear DDL sing “Guido’s Song”.

“Nine”…not to be confused with “9″, the strange, Tim Burton produced computer animated armageddon movie. I’ll take “9″ over this and I’ll take “8 1/2″ over all of them. Still, I loves me some Daniel Day-Lewis…the dude can do no wrong.

  • Yss

It looks great, the best I’ve heard Fergie singing, the ladies are beautiful and Daniel is so sexy…I’m very excited about this one!

  • Elizabeth

    Nine: Bringing the tambourine back…

  • Martha

It looks good, but if Rob Marshall gives us the same almost-unwatchable production numbers with endless cuts as “Chicago,” it’ll be a huge waste of all this great talent.

  • Looks Great

Saw 9 on broadway when it first opened, couldn’t imagine it on film and this looks utterly divine!!!!! Go Rob Marshall, u r genius! And Fergie I didn’t think she could sing like that!

  • fancypants

I wanted to at least HEAR Daniel Day-Lewis, his voice, his singing voice, how he totally transforms. I bet his singing voice is going to be a real surprise, cuz the trailer didn’t showcase it and I am left really wanting more!! But I love DDL!

The original musical and even the original film had almost no plot. They were concepts brilliantly executed with pizazz and style. If the film DOES include a plot, I’d rather wait until the theatre to hear about it. Until then, I’m willing to just watch this trailer again, and again, and again. Every woman looks utterly fantastic. Even Nicole Kidman looks the best she’s ever looked since Moulin Rouge. The trailer looks fantastic!

  • daniel day yeah baby

how hot is he? i never would’ve thought of him for this movie, but just watching the trailer how could u not think of him as the italian director? i love how he disappears into a role and how he has managed to live his life in peace as well. I think another oscar for mr.lewis is in order

  • Can’t Wait to See This

the trailer gets a 10, brilliant editing, great song choice, bravo!!! One of the best trailers ever….who did it? Usually i hate the trailers, but this one is a piece of art onto itself

  • Matt

    Can. Not. WAIT.

  • Winona

    That looks amazing!!!

  • Sean

This trailer has officially blown me away! I am so pumped to see this movie. It looks stunning and even Fergie Fug singing in the trailer has not ruined it one bit for me!

  • peaches

HOLY CRAP!! Rob, all is forgiven for Memoirs of a Geisha. I’ll be there on opening day!

  • Analia

Amazing cast, amazing actors, looks so well made, although what else to expect from the mind behind Chicago?
If that was indeed Fergie, she has pipes I have never heard before, then again, who knew that Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger also had the pipes when Chicago premiered?

  • first in line

This is going to be AMAZING!!! DDL and Marion are gonna shine in this like always. Marion is infectious, love her and I cant wait to hear her sing. And wow- Fergie you go girl!!

  • Lark3

This looks AMAZING! I am so there!

  • Melissa169a

Was at the opening years ago with Raul Julia. Remember saying, “I hope no one ever tries to make a movie out of this!” I will now eat my words. Love the trailer. Hope the movie is as good. Can’t wait.

  • All Hail My Beautiful Daniel Day-

This film looks intriguing…never having seen the many touring plays of NINE, I am wondering what it’s actually about. I do love My Beautiful Daniel Day…so nummy & he is quite possibly the greatest living Oscar winner. I’d love to hear him sing…and if that is Fergie singing “Be Italian”…wow! I forgive the “Oh sh–” song on her current CD. I only wish we had seen more DDL in this clip…no matter, I will be there when NINE hits theaters.
