'The Biggest Loser': Eat, Losers, Eat!

Helen_dlHaving watched the entire season, having teared up during every rousing episode, having gained 4 lbs. as I watched these hard-working folks run marathons, I’m surprised how much last night’s finale upset me.

Why didn’t I feel inspired and moved? Oh, right — Helen, you have scary bobby-pin arms! I wanted someone to slip Jerry a turkey sandwich and give his dear wife a glass of whole milk and make sure Tara left the show with a baggie of walnuts. These folks looked like they’d been starving themselves for last night’s weigh-in and might pass out at any minute.

Did anyone else out there feel like The Biggest Loser had turned into an upsetting bag of bones? Does it hurt my case that I’m eating bacon while writing this?

I could lose half my body weight too if all I had to do all day for 3 months was work out with a personal trainer and I had someone preparing my calorically-correct meals.

  • Lynny

I am glad she is healthier, but Helen looks about 10 years older than she did when she was 250+. That sort of surprised me. I don’t watch the show and just saw before and after pics.

  • Janice

It begs the question “What would you do for $250,000?”
    Just sayin’

According to nbc.com, Helen is 5’6″, and is now at 117 lbs. Good for her, but that is incredibly thin, and will be horribly difficult to maintain. I hope she finds a decent weight, even if it is a few pounds heavier, and maintains it.
My biggest thing with the finale was all the excess skin. For these people who lose hundreds of pounds, does the show provide surgery to remove some of the excess skin?

117 for 5’6″ is too thin. Jillian Michaels is 5’2′ 120 lbs. There is no way Helen who is 4 inches taller should way less. Helen look old. She looked good on the show before the final. She’s just gone too far.

she’s got madonna arms- and i dont mean that in the positive..

MsDaisy — If you have 1/2 of your body weight to lose, yes you could do it under the same circumstances as the contestants, but you ALSO can do it on your own, if you have the drive.

I can’t believe how negative the above commenters are. 5’6″, 117 is within healthy weight as per the BMI chart, and I thought she looked amazing. Her body had muscle on it, something that people who are starved do not have. (Because if your body is starving, it will begin consuming its own muscle.) Someone who is starving themselves is not going to be able to run a marathon.
All of the people on that show worked incredibly hard, and it’s unspeakably catty to diminish their accomplishments by saying ‘eat a sandwich!’How would any of you like it if people were snarking about how you needed to stay away from the big macs? That’s not okay, and what you’re saying isn’t okay.

I understand Lynny’s comments. I respect the need to lose weight and be healthier ( I am overweight too but not as much as them). These people have now resorted to being the (hollywood) version of healthy. That’s not healthy. Look at Jillian. She may be small but I bet you that she weigh’s more because she actually has muscle. That’s more important than actual weight loss… I agree we don’t want to see the biggest loser as a toothpick. Even Allison is healthy, she looks beautiful and she is post pregnancy but she is not trying to be a toothpick. That’s not what the biggest loser is about… I think that Mike looks the healthiest of them all. Although I must say that most of the at home players have done extremely well.

I agreee. I watched the entire season and my heart dropped when I saw Helen. Her face looked so sunken in. Granted there is a lot of money on the line but, is it really fair that she had trainers (plural) making her lift tires among other things to get her ready for last night? There should be some form of rule when the contestants go home they cannot use additional means (i.e. trainers) to help them lose weight. Even playing field. Regardless, kudos to all of the contestants and their weight loss.

Michelle, while I think that your statements are reasonable but the BMI index is only a guideline and should only be used as a guideline. As you age your index changes as you get older as it is harder to maintain a smaller weight. Being 5’3 my optimal weight is between 116 and 140… She is two full inches taller so her’s should not be that low.

The at-home winner lost nearly 50% of his body weight, but had been at the ranch with assistance for only 2 weeks. He did the rest all on his own. That is impressive!

  • Ariettty

Maybe if we hadn’t had to look at everyone’s arms… All that excess skin on Jerry and Helen was distracting and detracting!

  • Rose

I agree… Helen looked really gaunt… In fact, the way her stomach protruded a little…. it’s entirely possible that she was literally starving… with the exercises she was doing, the tire flips, she shouldn’t have had a stomach at all….
I’m concerned… I hope she gains weight… I also wish Tera had won.
