'American Idol': More judging, less singing!

Categories: American Idol 2009

Remember the good old days of American Idol, when Top 3 Night featured nine individual performances? Tonight, though, "the three amigos" were limited to two songs apiece, which allowed the production to focus on the things that really count: Simon and Kara trying to top each other with petulant quips (and with the score at 0-0, it’s a draw!); Simon and Paula continuing their grade-school-level flirtation/disgust pas de deux; the Dawg rambling on and on, as though anyone actually cared; and Ryan and Simon coughing up one more fetid homophobic nugget before things move to the Nokia. [West coasters: Beware of SPOILERS!]

Despite the judges’ best (worst?) efforts, though, the stars of the night were Adam, Kris, and Danny. Because, as Randy and Simon both reiterated tonight, American Idol is a singing competition, and as Paula would say, we’re just here for the music. When it all shook out, nobody exactly tanked, but one puppy-eyed crooner covered Kanye West, and proved great risks can yield great rewards. (Yes, Kris, I surrender: I will buy your record the day it comes out.) One glam-rock belter served vocals so huge, they may cause potential tidal waves on remote Pacific islands over the next 24 hours. (Note that Simon begged his fan base not to get complacent; Mom, are you voting?) And one goofy Wisconsin dude tackled a song that former Idol champ Taylor Hicks covered during Top 3 week in season 5, and his reboot did not match up. I know the smart money is probably on an Adam-Danny finale, but my crazy/sentimental/optimistic bucks say it’s gonna be Adam-Kris. How about you?

Post your thoughts about tonight’s show below, and as for me, well, I’ll be back in the early a.m. with my full TV Watch recap. In the meantime, don’t forget to make your pick in the EW.com Idol Prediction Challenge! Oh, and a word of warning: There won’t be an On the Scene at Idol report on PopWatch tomorrow morning, but fret not: Adam B. Vary will be in the Idoldome for results night on Wednesday, and back with his usual brand of jaunty on Thursday morning.

Slezak, be sure to look at the wack camera angles Kris got during his performance. After watching it back (oh, six or so times) it made me sea sick. It was total sabotage!

  • em

kradam for the finale! vote you guys!

  • Quebecfan

“… my crazy/sentimental/optimistic bucks say it’s gonna be Adam-Kris… ” My thougths exactly ! Let’s bring back the two real artists !

  • Molly

I’m glued to my screen watching for the next flicker of hope/ DialIdol has refreshed and yes it’s no joke!/ What once was 1.3 has turned into point 8./ We’re gaining! We’re gaining, Kris it’s not yet too late!/ Please Lord send Kris to the finals, he deserves to be there/ And maybe, just maybe, we’ll see Slezak smokin’ some pink hair!

  • Al

Best song of the night- Kris’ Heartless.
Best moment of the night- Adam’s middle finger to Danny- THAT”S HOW AEROSMITH IS DONE!
Mid-way thru Danny’s You Are So Beautiful I thought- I bet he’s sung this before at church- that seemed to be not a song to a woman, but to a higher love…..

  • Ron

Adam: Flicks earpiece out of his ear … Technical glitch or over zealous, LOUD back-up singer who sang over him. Ruined “Cryin” for me.

  • Anna

    No “On The Scene”? =(

  • jennyleigh

I thought Kris was going to throw himself under the bus when he announced he was singing “Heartless” but he totally blew me away. I have been voting like crazy for the past hour. I hope it will be a Kris-Adam finale!

  • zengarden

A big thank you to Anoop for watching idolatry and sending kris a “GO ACOUSTIC!” text. Heartless was really, really great. I wish he got more credit throughout the season re his arrangements.
I actually voted tonight! Hee. C’mon Kris and Adam!

  • Bart

Slezak, Thanks for noting the reduction in performance time. We actually lost 10 total performances this year in the last 3 weeks. Fox had better take note; they are tanking their own show.

  • Ryan

So uhh….I’m guessing Kris got Anoop’s text? haha

  • Pleiades

OK I need to vote for kris so can somebody post the number to text to and what to text?

  • Redeye

I could not wait to watch tonight’s show, but I was disappointed. I think that they ae all exhausted because of their hometown visits. Also, I think they get screwed up when they have the earpiece in. Until they get one that really fits well, and they get used to it. The judges fool around too much, and it is not fair to the singers!! Danny was not bad in his second song, but Kris was superb in his second song. I ADORE ADAM AND I THINK HE IS GREAT AND WILL BE A SUPER STAR, but tonight I thought that he was a little off. I don’t know why–his songs seemed to be on key, and he a great performer. I was not “thrilled” as I usually am, when when I want to re-play it over and over. VOTE VOTE VOTE for ADAM. Do not asume that he is safe without your votes. He is very special and derserves to win. I hope Kris will be in the finals as well!! GOOD LUCK!

  • Mike

LOL, start up the “Not based on performance” Danny Hate Train!

  • Sally in Chicago

Slezak I think you’re wrong…I think Adam is gone, because he was just too OTT for middle america. His screeching (yes it was screech) is going to do him…tonight was NOT his night, maybe he was tired?
(and where is Allison when we need her?)
I thought Danny was better than others thought he was because he actually “sang”….and Kris’ Heartless was inventive. I think Adam is gone, Kris & Gokey stay…and tonight was a snooze.

  • Bart

And, Slezak. Thanks for giving Taylor Hicks his props, as your colleagues seem to have jumped on the bashing bandwagon. I would suggest you-tubing Taylor’s cover of “Indiscriminate Act of Kindness.” It’s a brilliant, restrained, soulful performance.

  • Vote for KRIS

I keep getting through on Kris’ 08 number. Keep voting. Don’t get tired now!

  • sherry

Adam is very, very scary……small children be afraid….I AM!!!!!!!!!

  • beth

    Thanks, Anoop!

  • Bart

I’m an Adam fan, but I thought his theatricality finally bit him on “One.” The song simply didn’t need it; in fact it detracted greatly. The Aerosmith cover was typically brilliant, however.

  • Adam needs our help

we don’t want him to go home it would be a great tragedy. his numbers are 1-866-436-5701,1-866-436-5704, and 1-866-436-5707.

  • You’ll be a cute redhead…

……Mike. Danny did a million times better than Taylor Hicks. The fact you can’t admit he did beautifully is sad. Your irrational hatred is pathetic and unprofessional, not to mention UNentertaining. Ouch.

  • Brittany

YES! Kris is finally getting the recognition he has deserved all season! Adam is great, but I’ve been rooting for Kris all season. And his performance tonight showed that he’s no longer the dark horse. He’s a true contender for the title!

  • Jen C

Beware the manipulation of the post below me! Those are Gokey’s numbers!

  • Melissa

    Those arent Adam’s numbers, those are Gokey’s. Adam’s are 1-866-Idols-03, 06 and 09

  • NoNoNo

    Those are Gokey’s numbers.

  • NikkiB

Still texting non-stop for Adam. What was up with the back-up singer who was trying to outsing him? Really liked Adam and Kris tonight and I hope they are the last men standing.

  • nikki

NICE TRY “Adam needs our help.” Those are Gokey’s numbers, no?

  • nirali

For the person who wanted to ote for KRIS
    18664365708
    test to 5708

  • NoNoNo

Why do some posters feel they speak for all of “middle America”"
