Okay, it’s a fun flick. Lots of great Beatle tunes, etc. BUT #1 ?? Wow, I would have thought it would be “People From The Pod Planet”, or some B movie like that. Just kidding, but this does catch me off guard. I’m sure Sir Paul can sleep nights now.

The “bug”, if you wish to call it that, of rottentomatoes.com, is that it is solely a “fresh”/”rotten” scale, and there’s no room inbetween. A film can be universally moderately entertaining, universally admired as a three-star flick, and get 100% on the tomatometer. It’s faulty for this reason. That’s why metacritic.com is superior, even if it has less reviews.

The problem with rottentomatoes.com is that, by focusing solely on “fresh”/”rotten”, it ignores everything in between. Therefore, a universally admired flick (3 stars) will have the same authority as a universally LOVED film (4 stars). Better to go with a site like http://www.metacritic.com, which shows not only a “fresh”/”rotten” rating, but does so by degrees, with the more enthusiastic reviews being higher ranked.

I look at Rotten Tomatoes our of curiosity, but I tend not to see a real reason to care what critics think. I can form my own opinions, thanks!

Matt Atchity, Editor in Chief of RT here. It’s great to see this kind of discussion about our list: we knew that we would get some arguments, but any list of films is inherently controversial.
As a couple of people have pointed out, this is a list of “best reviewed” movies, not simply “best” movies. We use a mathematical formula that accounts for the differences in the amounts of reviews each film gets, as well handicapping for as the average amount of reviews for older movies, according to the year of release.
We also try and be as accurate as possible when adding reviews in general: we read each review we post, and when there are doubts, we’ll ask the critic directly what the rating should be. And a large portion of the reviews we have up have been posted by critics themselves. Sometimes a review can go either positive or negative, but we really do examine the review closely before marking it Fresh or Rotten.

Whatever. Rotten Tomatoes is the greatest way ever to tell if a movie is worth wasting time on or not.
    My Movie Reviewer Ratings:
    Rotten Tomatoes – 93
    Siskel & Ebert – 62
    Gene Siskel – 5

Whatever. Rotten Tomatoes is the best way to make sure I’m not wasting my time with a rotten movie.
Here are my movie review ratings:
    Rotten Tomatoes: 93
    Siskel & Ebert: 62
    Gene Shalit: 6

Rotten tomatoes does in fact provide a score out of 10 and that leads to far more sensible results than using the percentage score. Perhaps you should produce a list of the best scoring films. The result might surprise you.

A Hard Day’s night might be entertaining sure as hell, but as far as ‘cinematic excellence’ goes umm i dont think it qualifies.

there is no “greatest movie ever” the viewer decides for himself what is his favorite movie.

  • Earl

Rotten tomatoes will not admit that their score out of 10 is the best ranking system anywhere for movies.
This is what should matter not the silly fresh vs rotten or the percentage score. A Hard Day’s night is an 8.2 which is a good score but there are dozens of films scored better. They now have annoying removed any simple way of getting a best film list based on the score. Ask them why? They do not respond to email or to suggestions for change. By the way Citizen Kane is a 9.4 and Casablanca is a 9.

I was looking online to see what rotten tomatoes film reviewed, got the highest rating, while hard days night may be a great film the Godfather rated 100 from critics and 97 from audience and Hard Days Night was 100 and 87 just wondering if there’s a movie that got 100 and 100.
