Matthew Goode in 'Cemetery Junction': Which Goode do you prefer?

Filed under: Movies and tagged: , ,

Matthewgoode_lIs it okay if I reserve judgment on whether to be happy about Matthew Goode getting cast in the new Ricky Gervais-Stephen Merchant flick Cemetery Junction? Don’t get me wrong — I loved the guy in Match Point, in which he played Tom Hewett, a wealthy, gorgeous specimen of modern aristocracy (money over title, dahlings), who befriends an unrepentant social climber (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), who ends up stealing Tom’s hot little American honey (Scarlett Johansson). If there’s anyone who can distract me from Rhys Meyers’ pretty, pretty face, and Johansson’s ostentatiously perfect everything, it’s Goode. He’s got that classic Byronic hero thing going, only not quite so edgy. If he were a Jane Austen hero he’d be the affable Mr. Ferrars (Sense & Sensibility), or maybe the kindly Mr. Knightley (Emma) in his golden years, but never haughty hottie Mr. Darcy (Pride and Prejudice).

That’s one Matthew Goode, anyway. The other one you’d know if you saw Watchmen — or if, like me, you saw pictures of Goode as Watchmen‘s Ozymandias, and they freaked you out so much, they scared you away from the movie. That’s right, I didn’t see Watchmen because Goode’s severe, asymmetrical blond bob (stolen from every boy in my high school ca. 1991) made me cringe.

I admit, though, that I could be way off base here. Maybe the blond Goode is…good? Is he hotter with highlights? What do you think PopWatchers? Which Matthew Goode do you want reporting for work on Cemetery Junction — the buff brunette, or the cornsilk cutie? Opinions, please.

My goodness, you have no idea what you’re missing with Goode in Watchmen! He basically stole the entire show — you need only go here:

The Moviefone: Unscripted clips with Matthew, Billy, Patrick and Malin also can’t be missed — I’ve never enjoyed such an ensemble cast so much.
I couldn’t be happier that he’s in Cemetary Junction — what a wonderful cast it’s turning out to be with Matthew, Ralph Fiennes, Felicity Jones, etc.

There is almost no one hotter than Matthew Goode IMHO. However, I’m not a fan of the blond bob.

What’s happened to my Entertainment Weekly? What’s happened to my Popwatch? This site (and this section specifically) used to be an almost hourly obsession of mine…a great mix of pop-cultural info as well as humorous observations. Now, I come on here once a week only to find stupid, frivolous entries like this one. Really? An article about which hairstyle we prefer on an actor? Really? EW employs a writer that wouldn’t watch a movie because of a haircut? You work for an Entertaimment magazine for Cripes sake…you should be watching as many movies/TV shows, listening to as much music, and reading as many books as is humanly possible. This magazine, its p!ss-poor new writers, and this website have become a joke…an American Idol obsessed, Twilight loving, Top 40 listening joke (if you need proof, go to the local newsstand and read the new issue: AWFUL…not one interesting article–except maybe the one about Angels & Demons). This magazine used to matter…now it’s People.

I liked Goode in “Family and Other Animals”, which is a delightful movie in any case. He had the brown hair there.

I have to say, I definitely prefer brunettes to blonde when it comes to men. I think Goode is better when he’s dark and handsome, that said…
…Watching Watchmen was still pleasurable, and I still found Ozy to be rather attractive. I stopped looking at his blonde hair and was just brought in by his character, and Goode is doing amazing work.
Don’t let the bob freak you out. You’ll get over it in 20 minutes or so :)

The brown-haired Matthew. Have you seen “Imagine Me & You”? He’s utterly charming in it.

Looks waaaay better with dark hair. More Gooder if you will.

You must be kidding. You stayed away from Watchmen because of a haircut? Did you shy away from No Country for Old Men too? By the way, Matthew Goode does a fantastic job. The entire plot hinges on him in the finale and he pulls it off beautifully.
Did the casting news here mention hair color? Have you seen the Lookout or any of his other work? Or can you only comment on photos of his hair?
And can we get an actual entertainment writer up in here?

His haircut scared you away from watching “Watchmen”? Are you frakking serious? Wow.

When I think of Matthew Goode, I think of Chasing Liberty. I really like that movie. And I’m not afraid to admit it. I could picture him in Cemetary Junction, based on the synopsis.

Love him, he’s gorgeous. He stole so many scenes in Match Point. What’s next for this gorgeous Rupert Everett lookalike?

I’m SO GLAD Cemetery Junction is getting press!!!! Ricky and Steve need to do well in America so us devoted fans can get our Gervais/Merchant fix. EW, PLEASEEEEE give us few devoted fans updates about filming this epic movie! And please pray that Americans will watch it when it comes out cause these men are GENIUSES that deserve all the recognition they can get.

Among most of my friends the preference is for a brunette, emotionally repressed and unhappily married Goode ala Brideshead Revisited.
While watching Watchmen a friend leaned over and said with resignation in her voice, “Matthew Goode. More like Matthew Bad.” Bad joke caused by a bad bad wig.

  • Brody

I hate to admit it, but my favorite Matthew Goode role is actually his British/American secret agent in Chasing Liberty.

i agree a thousand percent with Jessica– youre dumb
