'30 Rock': Best moments from 'Mamma Mia'

As far as 30 Rock episodes go, I admittedly was of the EW minority that wasn’t crazy about last week’s "The Natural Order." But last night’s "Mamma Mia" won me right back. C’mon, what other show could pull off turning "Mamma Mia" into a verb?! Besides Liz’s unnatural joy about Jack’s search for his father, which reminded her of that very "madcap musical romp…fun….good" movie, we also had Tracy playing dad to a con artist pretending to be his son (who wants nothing more than to open a dojo). We also had Steve Buscemi come back again this week to sufficiently weird us out, and Alan Alda was delightful, as usual, as Jack’s likely ("Gasp. Feign surprise!") father Milton. Here, in chronological order, are the standout moments, lines, and impromptu sing-a-longs from last night’s episode:

1. What family means to Jack: "Resent, guilt, anger, and Easter egg hunts that turn into knife fights."

2. "If I have learned anything from my Sims family, when a child doesn’t see his father enough he starts to jump up and down, and then his mood level will drop until he pees himself."

3. Tracy making a faulty sidecar on a motorcycle for his dog.

4. Liz and Pete (more Hornberger, please!) trying to figure out Tracy’s (and Samuel L. Jackson’s) age:

5. Kenneth joining in for a rendition of "It Takes Two"

6. S & M magazines: Super & Magical!

7. "I will not be spoken to that way! I’m a contest winner!"

8. Milton ups the ante for shoe put-downs: "When is your cult committing suicide?"

9. Tracy may hug people too hard and get lost in malls, but hey, he’s not stupid.

10. Tina’s TONY cover.

What did you think, PopWatchers? Could you not resist last night’s episode either? Or was Liz’s fart train "a deal breaker, ladies?"

I’m totally with you in that I didn’t LOVE last week’s “30 Rock” (the Jenna subplot was, like, beneath this show).
However, to me, this was one of the best episodes of the season (if not the best) and really reminded me of vintage, classic season 1 “30 Rock.”
The show kept it in the TGS family, introduced a taboo/relatable topic that we didn’t even realize we think about (the fact that black people age magnificently). Also, it didn’t go overboard with BIG.NAME guest stars, but still worked in brilliant actors (Buscemi and Alada) into the mix seamlessly.
I loved the subplot about Liz and Pete thinking that Tracey was 60 (or 70 since he watches NCIS!). I also loved the Alda moment when he said (and I paraphrase) “I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY WE’RE YELLING, BUT I DON’T LIKE TO LOSE AN ARGUMENT, SO I’M LEAVING.”

I wasnt crazy about last weeks episode either but I really enjoyed last nights. I love that jacks dad is a liberal. Also as a biracial person I got a kick out of liz and pete trying to figure out the correct age of black people. Its hard I thought Samuel L. Jackson was 50.

Eh. I fell asleep midway through.

I, too, thought last night was great, full of classic, funny lines. My husband thought it was because it was a “Jack heavy” episode, which, I have to say, I do tend to prefer. Loved loved loved the “Momma Mia!” references, although, and this is classic NBC/GE, ads for the DVD were on right after the episode. Makes you wonder what came first, the joke or the ad time? Regardless, loving the season overall, and yes, last night much better than last week. Please keep Jenna in the background.

“Tracy is practicing sitting in chairs,” the Sims reference, Liz getting SUPER excited about Mamma Mia… my god I love this show with all my heart.

Btw, I’ll be both lizzing and crying next week. The summary for “Kidney Now” with Elvis Costello?! Geezus. Why must we have summer hiatus and wait so damn long for the dvd release?!

Best line of the night: “I gave my pastor my gun in case I get the gloomy’s again”. This was a great episode. If they ever change theme songs I hereby nominate Liz, Pete & Kenneth’s “It takes 2″. My second favorite line was jack asking himself “why don’t I have any other friends?” Lemon out!

  • yeah

“come on in jack, i’m just practicing sitting”
    and yes, more hornberger please.

When we heard Liz Lemon dis NCIS, we couldn’t stop laughing! We love 30 Rock, but we also like to watch NCIS… and we KNOW it’s an old people show!

I want all you bastards to meet my bastard!
    Love Tracy!

    My favorites:
Kenneth denies Jack’s request to speak with Milton, then instantly the scene cuts to Jack and Milton sitting in Jack’s office, talking.
When Milton finds out Jack’s his son,”Oh my God, wait a minute. Is this contest some Mama Mia thing?”

When Steve Bucemi’s character tells Jack he’ll give him some privacy and he closes his eyes.
Also, now that he’s in the building, he has access to the cafeteria. So, y’know, FREE ICE.

OK, who didn’t yell “Twist” at the end?
