The sad news is that Kelly could be leaving The Office. The amazing news is that it’s because Mindy Kaling has a new development deal to create her own comedy! All together now, PopWatchers: Hell yes.
Kaling told Variety she hasn’t settled on an idea yet — could be a workplace comedy, could be a buddy show a la Flight of the Conchords — but I’m hoping there’s some kind of style or shopping angle because Kaling’s (mostly defunct) shopping blog was one of my all-time faves. I saw her do stand-up a few months ago, and she was totally charming, plus I was nuts for her one-episode "House Poor" web series.
So I’m already looking forward to the 2010-11 TV season. How about you, PopWatchers? Are you on board for a Kaling-led series?

She’s hilarious on The Office, and I know she’s been behind the scenes on that show. I’d at least give her show a try.
The more funny women on TV, the better.

YAY! That’s so exciting! The episodes she writes are some of the best ones. I would totally miss her from The Office…so hopefully she’ll do both???
If she’s able, she should do both, Kelly is an awesome character, and Kaling herself is funny (the Office eps that she writes are some of the best), so I’ll give her new show at least a thorough chance.
This is terrible news, because it means that yet ANOTHER of the best writers on The Office is leaving!! First Mike Schur left, then we lost most of Greg Daniels’ genius, and now Mindy!! Gah, can’t they just wait until the show gracefully ends? This is how great shows die, people. Witness: This mostly sub-par season of The Office. Mindy is awesome, but she should really wait until the show is over to do her own thing – she owes it to the fans.
She’s really funny on TO, but I’m not convinced she is a good actress that can showcase multiple sides to a character. But I’d definitely be rooting her on (on the sinking ship that is NBC). I’d probably be more excited about this than I was/am about the derivative Parks and Recreations.

I love me some Mindy Kaling, but do have one specific request for the show: PLLLEEEEASSSSSEEE, oh Pretty PLEASSEEEEE cast Sarayu Rao on the show!
Sarayu played the Indian dude’s bethroed cutie girlfriend on “The Big Bang Theory” and I’ve been pining for her return to tv since then.
While Sarayu’s accent was really thick on the show, she’s actually a midwesterner who speaks English with the same region-free diction and pronounciation as Kaling. She’s also hella funny and would be a perfect match for Kaling. Maybe she could play Mindy’s cousin on the show or something?
Whoever they cast, this should be one heck of a great show. I’m psyched!
She is hilarious. Its bittersweet because I love her on The Office. But if her new show is funny I can deal. Hopefully she can come back to The Office if her new show doesn’t work out.
