Christina, burlesque, and singing? We're in.

Christinaaguilera_lChristina Aguilera’s making her silver-screen debut in a musical called Burlesque, about a small-town girl who makes good, somehow, by working at a Cabaret-like L.A. performance venue. It was written with her in mind, and that makes sense — I simply cannot imagine a better first-movie vehicle for Christina’s big voice and retro-sexy vibe. It’s a crime that she hasn’t graced a musical earlier, in fact, but points for holding out for the right project, as opposed to jumping into the first cheesy teen movie available the minute she became famous. And is it me, or is this basically a slightly-classier version of Coyote Ugly? More to the point: Does that make it more awesome or less? (My head says "less," but my heart says "more.")

What do you think, PopWatchers? Will Burlesque be a hit or a mess? Does Christina belong on the big screen?

I am excited about the concept of Christina and this film. I just hope it is closer to Moulin Rouge than Showgirls. I guess that will all come down to the script and the songs. Here’s hoping….

She definitely belongs on the big screen, and there’s no better star for a musical today.
She can sing better than anyone, and dance her booty off. Plus she has so much drama and presence in her performing.
I think she’ll surprise us all, and look gorgeous doing it. I can’t wait!

  • Mr. Peabody

    She’d better be naked.

  • Suzanne

I hope that she can act because she’s really an incredible singer. She has far more range and capability than she shows with most of her pop tunes.

Iam over the moon that Christina will finally be doing a movie. I saw her on SNL (not just the Sex and the City skit) and she was really good for a fledging. I have a feeling that she’ll surprise us. She’s so committed to her work, whether it’s music, charity, or being mother and wife. I don’t see how this could be any different.
    Good luck Mrs. B.

If this film is “burlesque” in the “Moulin Rouge” way, she’ll have a hit on her hands!

Definitely hoping that it’s closer to Moulin Rouge, but really, she’s been practicing for this role for years, the whole concept sounds like the life of her Lady Marmalade video vixen persona with a bit of the Ain’t no other Man throw in for good measure.

i would love for christina to use this film and its soundtrack as a chance to craft a really strong concept album. unfortunately, i’m worried she’ll continue with this lada gaga-style sound she showed us on “keeps getting better.” if there’s one person who shouldn’t be using autotone, it’s christina. let’s hope this movie at least gives us some raw, powerful x-tina.

Christina is incredibly talented and I can’t wait to see her in this movie.

I basically feel about Christina the way I feel about Whitney(Houston, not Pastorek)I LOVE the voice, haven’t connected with the music yet. But there’s still time. I liked the material from her last CD the best, especially ‘Candyman’. I think she’s gonna be a superstar for a long time…

Woah, burlesque and Coyote Ugly aren’t in the same league. Like the recent trend for all girl roller derby, burlesque does have a “post feminist” element of female empowerment through sexuality. But unlike in Coyote “skankhole” Ugly, the women are the ones empowered in the Burlesque shows.
Coyote Ugly is in the same league as most strip clubs (which, Diablo Cody comments aside, are mostly non-empowering).
Burlesque is getting popular again, and with good reason. I am psyched a movie’s coming out about it, and look forward to all the Betty Page inspired burlesque Halloween costumes that are sure to be all the rage this fall.
Get your cameras out fellas, it’s eye candy time.

Wow, I must say that I am shocked (and pleased!) that the posts here don’t consist of calling Christina a skank-whore and that this film will be an autobiography more than anything else. Probably it’s because you guys aren’t a bunch of immature teenagers. I’m very happy for Christina, and I hope it’s a worthwhile project, and I hope she can act. Hopefully she can make the haters shut up for good.

hell, i’m in. i saw her in concert during the Back to Basics tour, and YES, she can rock the burlesque.
(and i’ve never even seen Coyote Ugly, by the way. but, c’mon, that was in a BAR.)

  • John

This role should have gone to Britney -she is the real Queen of Pop!!!

  • Kathleen

I’m in. That actually sounds pretty cool.

I’m in. That actually sounds pretty cool.

    @John:
You mean the Queen of lip-synching, talentless pop stars?

  • Stella

You think a stripper is classier than a bartender? Seriously?
Burlesque is porn for women who think they’re feminists.
Not cool, not seeing it. Blah.

  • Dancing Queen

I am so excited. Kudos for Christina for not jumping into the acting seen earlier. I am thinking that this role is right up her alley. Very “Back to Basic”. I think that she’ll own it.

  • Aaron

I don’t care if she can act. I’ll watch it only to be treated to glimpses of her ass, legs and jugs.

  • Solange

She’s got a great body and isn’t afraid to flaunt it. Christina can do no wrong! I’m definitely looking forward to it.

  • Princess

She’ll do fine. Her body is banging and she’s gorgeous — she can dance, she can sing, she’s raw, she’s edgy…she is amazingly wonderful!

  • andy

Something worthwhile to watch while getting to drool over this hot girl.

  • Julie

I think there was already a movie like this-it was called Glitter.

  • Brandon

Rumors are that Kristin Bell, Julianne Hough and some dancers from SYTYCD will be in this movie. Some serious actors they are supposedly engaged in talks with include Stanley Tucci. Could be a “Chicago” meets “Cabaret.”
