Sure, 2008 was a banner year for Indiana Jones fans, but Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was, to put it kindly, the fourth best Indy film, and Lego Indiana Jones was a cute rehash of the original trilogy that skewed toward the younger set. Redemption may be just around the corner: This summer LucasArts whips up Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings, a brand new adventure on the Wii.
Releasing on June 9, this game has a serpentine backstory. It started out in 2006 as a next-gen Xbox 360/PS3 game powered by a new 3D technology called Euphoria. The demo I saw showed a fight sequence with Indy atop a moving cable car in San Francisco. It looked tantalizing but that game was canceled; LucasArts officially says it was a "strategic business decision" to stop work on the title. The project eventually evolved into Staff of Kings, which includes bits from the more advanced PS3/Xbox 360 version (including the cable car scene) but runs on the less powerful Wii console.
While it’s still not quite the true next-gen Indy payout gamers have been clamoring for, it’s shaping up to be a satisfying chaser after last summer’s Indy binge. LucasArts provided us with this exclusive web documentary, which goes into more detail about the game’s production.
How about it PopWatchers: Are you looking forward to some more Indy action?

why didn’t they use this as the plot of the newer movie? Its seems far superior.
that plot is better than the plot of “indy…and the crystal skull”
although i’ll admit, i enjoyed the movie. because i love indy movies. it was still fun. it was just lacking.
i might have to give this game a try.
OMG, you just wrote that Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is the fourth best Indy film, and you are right – FOURTH – it sucked more than any of the other 3. Can anyone say over-blown-and-too-much-CGI. I longed for the real live action stunts of the first film. (which was the first best, Crusade was second, and Temple was third). OK, now I know this has nothing to do with the point of this aricle. Umm, I don’t have a wii, so I’ll leave now. Just had to make a point. Bye.
The Staff of Kings sounds like a great MacGuffin for an Indy pic, far better than Crystal Skulls.
@Andy, you didn’t make a point. You stated an opinion. I know the internet doesn’t distinguish, but you should.
This game does look better than the movie though.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls was just as good as any of the sequels (but not better than Raiders of the Lost Ark), but the sad losers that have to blame George Lucas for ruining their childhoods or some other imagined evil just can no longer see the films for what they always have been, homages to the “B” movie serials of the 1930s-1950s. And regardless of what you tools think, the film made over $300 million domestically and over $800 million internationally, so obviously enough people liked it to make it a gigantic success. The true test of the bias that the undeservedly elitist internet trolls who could never make a movie themselves have against George Lucas will be with the release of the GL-produced “Red Tails”, which has nothing to do with Star Wars or Indy, but somehow I think that it will be the same old rhetoric from the less then useless haters and their equally useless enablers like EW or AICN. Indy IV was great, so F-Off!
As long as aliens don’t show up at the end to collect the staff it sounds much better than Crystal Skull. John Williams’ lackluster score also contributed to the disappointment last May.
So Indy is searching for the Staff of Kings? Like, the butlers and cooks and maids and stuff?
They didn’t use this plot for the latest IDJ movie because of GEORGE LUCAS!! They had many plots/scripts to consider, including one written by Frank Darabont, but LUCAS insisted on going with the Crystal Skull nonsense.
KOTCS SUCKED!!! The amount of money a movie makes DOES NOT equal its worth as a film. If that were the case, the Oscars would simply hand the best movie of the year award to whichever movie made the most money in a given year.
Though the fact that your message is by far the most trollish message here is good for a laugh…
If it’s only on ONE PLATFORM then…NO….I’m not looking forward to it.
EVERY script Lucas looked at over the last few years had the Crystal Skull plot. That, and the main setpieces (fridge, jungle chase) were required for the story by Lucas himself. All the writers brought in had a basic outline to work with, so it’s not likely we would have seen a major difference had a different script been used.
Fact is: If you love “Indiana Jones” – you must hate “Skull”.
