Milo Ventimiglia's 'Ultradome': Two geeks enter, one geek leaves

Startrekhero_lEvery geek has done it, at one point in their lives or another, posit hypothetical battles and try to decide who’d win. Would Superman beat the Hulk? Darth Vader vs. Gandalf? The U.S.S. Enterpise vs. the Battlestar Galactica?

Heroes star Milo Ventimiglia is looking to dramatize these "eternal" battles for a Web series called Ultradome, which would use THE AWESOME POWER OF SPECIAL EFFECTS (sorry, caps are really the only way to convey BOOMING VOICE) to pit fictional figures against one another in an arena environment. As Ventimiglia told the Hollywood Reporter: "My whole life has been spent engaged with friends in intellectualdebate…like whether Captain Kirk is tougher than Spock or ifMiddle Earth is a more difficult place to live than Tatooine. With Ultradome, we can bring these debates tothe public and settle them in the most logical way possible:through armed combat."

Cool, right? But here’s the catch: You won’t see, say, CG versions of Star Wars‘ Han Solo facing off against Firefly’s Malcolm Reynolds. You’ll see two two fans dressed up as the character they’re championing doing battle. And suddenly I’m way less interested. Why? Because I don’t necessarily want to watch anything that reminds me of this. I mean, I get it: The rights/licensing issues alone would make it prohibitively expensive for a TV series, let alone a series of webisodes. It just feels like something you’d see in a recessed corner of Comic-Con, with a gaggle of slave Leias cheering the combatants on.

But, hey, props to Milo for letting his geek flag fly. He walks it like he talks it.

(And, for the record, Superman would defeat the Hulk. As my friend John correctly reasoned, while the Hulk’s strength is, theoretically, limitless — given that it’s based entirely on his level of rage — Superman’s power is will-based. He flies because he wants to fly. And will doesn’t require leverage. Do not ask me when we had this conversation. All I will say is, it happened after we were both married.)

And the Enterprise would totally beat Galactica.

  • bamabunny

Cara K: well, YEAH, now that we know the Galactica was probably built on the cheap and only had so many jumps left in her. That plus the Cylon resin apparently didn’t do much good.

I’d love to see Wolverine duke it out with Lobo, which is DC’s copycat of Wolverine. DC and Marvel did a “DC Vs. Marvel” series, but it stunk and settled few arguments. The Wolverine vs. Lobo fight was particularly lame. How about a decent rematch?
Also, the Transformers super robots (Superion, Destructor, etc) vs. Voltron. The winner takes on the Veritechs from Robotech. Who wins?

CaraK and Bamabunny: Ahh, but you’re forgetting the most important part- soul. Galactica has it, Enterprise don’t. Yeah, she was pretty beat up by the end, but I’d still take the Old Girl over Enterprise any day.

  • KR

whatever, the Galactica would kill the Enterprise. Enterprise had one dinky laser and one photon torpedo bay that had to be manually loaded. The Galactica was covered in massive guns and god knows how many nuclear weapons bays. God I can’t believe I’m this big of a geek.

  • Chaddogg

Uh, Marc? It’s called kryptonite. Assuming that Hulk starts the battle as Bruce Banner, he wouldn’t even NEED to become the Hulk to beat Superman….just throw on some kryptonite, don’t be a moron (unlike Luthor) and Superman goes down.

Kirk vs. Spock? No contest, Vulcans are many times stronger than humans. The real contest, as every Trekkie knows, is between Kirk and Picard.

  • Heather

Hahahaha. This is like something my friends and I would talk about. Too bad I won’t actually see Mal battle it out with Han Solo. It would be pretty awesome (my money is on Mal, but then again, you never know)

  • NHS

Rebecca I agree Kirk vs Picard. Im partial to Picard. What do you think?

  • Marc Bernardin

In a battle of fisticuffs, Kirk would totally win. There is no defense for a karate chop to the neck. But in a battle of wits, I think I’d have to side with Picard. He’d make them have tea before fighting, and then spike the Earl Grey.

and, yeah, I’m siding with Galactica. Real ships of the line don’t need “shields.” Federation wimps.

    1. If Milo wants a big old geek fight so much, how come we never see a humongous old-fashioned superbeing battle between Peter and Sylar on camera? You’re both omnipotent, destroy a couple of cities while punching each other for pete’s sake, like in the comics … I always thought they should have kept more to the X-Men themes and watched Peter turn into Dark Peter and do some major, continent-level TK destruction … and then, sobbing, kills himself in front of his brother, to save his own soul. And Nathan cries, “PETE! NOOOOO!”
    Or does Marvel copyright that?
    2) Galactica will win. That too is in God’s plan.
    3) Janeway will crush them both and use them as a futon while she sips her coffee.

    NHS and Marc-
My money’s on Picard. He’s one tough old bastard. (And come on, Kirk, those drop kicks? Really?)

  • Bonnie

I can’t wait to see this show! Milo’s is definitely the coolest celeb geek out there!

  • vmac

Yeah, how about Robotech’s Beta/Alpha fighter combo vs Optimus/Magnus Prime! hahah,… um,… this is anonymous right?
All Enterprise would have to do is call in a whole bunch of federation buddies and phaser the loner Galactica to death but would probably take out a dozen or so ships with her – that is if it is in God’s plan :)

  • Miloo

    hahahahahahahahahaha lool

  • fragileheart

Hot and geeky. What more can you ask for?

  • Lily

I totally agree. Superman would be The Hulk!

  • Sofi

I dont get it… what kind of fans are going to battle? Can we apply for it? :D
