Kirstie Alley is bigger now: so why is she apologizing?

Categories: Have You Seen This?

Say it ain’t so, Kirstie Alley. On The Oprah Winfrey Show today, the former Cheers star went back to the same stage where she previously pranced around in a bikini after losing 75 lbs and literally apologized — apologized! — for gaining it all back. How come, girl? Alley owes no explanation to anyone — least of all to the queen of yo-yo dieters — for having to retreat to her fat jeans. But there she was, coming clean about losing motivation once her deal with Jenny Craig expired.

I’m all for taking responsibility (hell, even I need to start facing facts that dousing my lunch in creamy sauces is not gonna get me closer to a svelte size 6). But doing it on national TV? Uh-uh. No way. Alley’s public display of fat candor ended up saying less about her need to appear self-aware and responsible and more about her obvious desire to find a new sponsor — like Weight Watchers or Slimfast. Or maybe she just wanted to plug her new weight loss program. Whatevs. Stop the madness, Kirstie! You look fine the way you are (though I give mondo credit to those fabulous lighting guys on Oprah).

What did you think of the appearance? Did it make you love Alley — or feel sorry for her?

It seems like she gained the weight back just so she could create her own weight loss line. I don’t feel bad for her at all. She was making a joke out of it.

  • Kevin Malone

She was so hot in Star Trek 2.

  • Dwight K. Schrute

She looks horrible. Time to push the food away, fatty!

  • to Dwight K. Schrute

    shut. the f*ck. UP.

  • keith

Did you even watch the show? The whole point was that she’s got a weight loss program of her own that she wanted to start plugging — she is going to be running her own Jenny Craig-ish weight loss system, which she hopes will begin by autumn. She’s been ‘doing research’ and wants to share all she’s learned. Eye roll.

  • KellyK

    Pathetic.

  • Ailene

I think it was brave of her to go on tv after gaining the weight back, although i agree, she really doesn’t have to apoligize. I think Kristie Alley is great. She seems so hilarious, and nice.

I hadn’t heard this since I’ve quit watching Oprah but I’m not surprised. Jenny Craig-type diets aren’t realistic for long term wight loss. Once you’re on your own and your meals are no longer pre-measured, it’s up to the individual and most people don’t have the willpower to do it. Portion control Kirstie, portion control.

  • KAH

talk about going to great lengths to plug a product and keep the income flowing, jeez
as a man going 6′2″, 280 lbs, I’m insulted that she’s trying to capitalize on being heavy, in effect making a cynical mockery of it

I thought Princess Leia killed this monster. Kinda explains why nobody has seen Jameson Parker in the last few years. She ate him!

I’m just so sick and tired of Ms. Winfrey constantly underscoring the idea that obsessing about not only our own weight but everyone else’s is somehow meaningful or worthwhile.

  • Wes

Brian, I’m sure you’re the type to check back here to see how hilarious we all found your post. When you do, maybe also check Google or Wikipedia to see that instead of Jameson Parker, you meant Parker Stevenson.

  • Liz

I think Kirstie looks great right now. I wish she’d stop dieting and just accept herself – I know the yo-yo thing is just going to eventually lead to more and more weight gain. She looks gorgeous today. Did you hear that Kirstie?

  • B

I’m so tired of the idea that people are only acceptable or worthwhile if they are thin. This country’s standard of beauty – the Hollywood standard – is unhealthy! I really wish the focus was on *who* people *are*, rather than on whether or not they meet some ridiculous weight level. Kirstie, you’re beautiful.

  • Sophie

Kirstie Alley is beautiful. She has nothing to be ashamed of and I admire her.

  • Linda

I cannot believe after all these years that she still has not FIXED HER CROOKED TEETH. Her bottom teeth are so misaligned I don’t know how she can even eat anything. Maybe if she had braces she would stop eating so much…maybe she would stop talking so much. She should ask for help from her scientology wacko friends.

  • Kent

This might seem really shocking to some people, but if you eat less and move more you’ll actually lose weight. If people accept themselves as overweight they’re just being lazy – sad way to live your life. The focus should be on staying active and eating healthy.

  • anonymous

“Eat less and move more and you’ll actually lose weight” Whoa!! Thank you!! Thank you for your grand insight!! So glad you have finally set that straight!! Sorry for the sarcasm–I think it’s wrong to be a jerk on message boards but really…Do you honestly think that overweight people don’t already know this? Yes, in theory you are correct that eating less will induce weight loss. But the reality is that if weight loss were as easy as that there would be far, far less overweight people. It’s kind of like telling an alcoholic that if she just stops drinking, she would no longer be an alcoholic–well, duh!!! These kind of problems are very complicated for the people who struggle with them. Those with eating or substance disorders must overcome emotional/psychological factors, biology, genetics, cultural influences, how their brain has become wired over time etc etc. It is not possible for all of these factors to just go away simply because the person decides they want to change.

Kirstie is obviously a psychological mess and her morbid obesity is a reflection of her inner demons. It’s a tremendous shame that such a pretty woman has allowed herself to become the embarassment she is today. Kirstie is pushing 60 and I think very few care whether or not she loses weight “this time”. Rather than focusing on yet another diet perhaps Kirstie should work with a cognitive behavioral therapist to address her reasons for all the emotional eating.

Bad Brian, bad! You too Dwight!!!!

I think this is a thinly veiled attempt to sell a book/new diet plan. I admire her courage in admitting her problem but do think the need for attention is not healthy.

  • Miss Misery

Thank you, Kirstie Alley, for *apologizing* for your weight gain, thus sending the message (yet again) that women are not beautiful unless they are thin, and that a woman’s worth is judged solely by her looks alone.
How come we never see Kevin James or John Goodman publicly apologizing for being overweight?

  • Tess Ann

I had some sympathy for her until I saw the Oprah clip. As one poster said she’s pushing her own weight loss program. So as she’s looking 4 sympathy she’s really just pushing her program 2 make money off of people who believe in her. These people probably don’t have her resources. What a joke & a charlatan she is. Anon.@3:58AM & Kent r both correct in their posts. As a personal trainer, I’ve seen people with difficult issues concerning food & I’m not minimizing that but there r also a lot of people who r just basically lazy. They will drive 20 mins to a restaurant but say they don’t have time to cook something healthy at home. Case in point, in trying to help 2 overweight family members one says, “it’s hard I’m an emotional eater” the other says I just love food. True both, but I have seen the laziness in both of them also. I have 2 laugh when I c celebrities such as Kirstie Ally actually giving advice on how 2 lose weight when she obviously can’t do it herself. She should be ashamed.

  • Kate

Why has no one mentioned that what is unattractive about Kirstie Alley is her ridiculous hair, not her weight. Oh, and the fact that she’s always said horrible things about women and people who are overweight.

  • Tess Ann

I have to address the post by Miss Misery. I saw this after I just posted but it just really annoys me when women make these statements. Stop crying & making excuses for yourselves. Look if u choose to go into the entertainment field u know what is expected. If u choose to become an athlete u know u must keep ur body in top shape to compete. Kevin James & John Goodman are comics & they don’t get leading man roles. If Matthew McConeghy let his body go to the point of Kevin James’ he would no longer get leading man roles. Sorry that’s the way it is. Does Kirstie think she would have gotten the role on Cheers if she looks like she does now? Nor should she, the role called for a thin beauty. I know I’ll catch heat for this post probably mostly from women but I’m sorry people need to hear the truth & take responsiblity instead of lamenting about discrimination & how people treat them. I personally havn’t seen too many overweight people that were healthy.
