Zac Efron's 'SNL' promos: Comedy gold?

Categories: Saturday Night Live

We’ve already seen the High School Musical-alum-turned-17 Again star bring the chuckles with this week’s cameo-studded funnyordie.com skit "Zac Efron’s Pool Party." Now come the promos for his upcoming April 11 Saturday Night Live hosting gig, with resident goofballs Fred Armisen and Keenan Thompson. See below:

What do you think, PopWatchers — does Zac have the chops for live comedy? Will you be tuning in or TiVoing this weekend? And how many bets on an HSM skit? (I’m seeing cast newbie Abby Elliott for Vanessa Hudgens, and Kristen Wiig as the Tiz, for sure).

'The Unusuals' snap judgment: Kooky but real

Theunusuals_lThe art of the cleverly kooky cop show is not lost: It’s found any time you tune into Bones, Psych, Castle, the list goes on and on. We like it because the characters are smart, quippy people we could actually imagine talking to (because they’re smart and quippy). Personally, I’m fine with the networks filling their grids with this kind of show, particularly in the 10 p.m. hour when I’ve often had enough real-life drama for the day that I just want to watch something entertaining — but not mindless. That said, I’m still sorta surprised that I liked ABC’s latest offering, The Unusuals, as much as I did. They’re telling you how "kooky" it is right there in the title. Luckily, the writing and acting are more subtle.

Is it gay marriage...or just 'Raining Men'?

Categories: Viral Video!!!

A group called the National Organization for Marriage recently released an ad called "Gathering Storm", which featured actors talking about the dangers of gay marriage while surrounded by hilariously ominous, computer-generated storm clouds. Unfortunately for NOM, gay people have a long-standing relationship to bad weather. There’s even a disco anthem about it. It took less than a day for someone to remix the ad on YouTube:

Whaddya think: Effective response?

'South Park': Kanye West is a gay fish, yo

On last night’s fish sticks-centric episode of South Park, the "most talented musician in the world," Kanye West, failed to comprehend the most hilarious joke in history: If you put fish sticks in your mouth, you must be a gay fish. The ep was almost as brutal to Kanye and bumbling comedian Carlos Mencia as its animators were to poor Ellen Degeneres’ nose. Press play below for "Kanye’s" auto-tune-y celebration of his true gay-fish nature. "It’s a rap, girl."

Despite the above musical genius (is "genius" connected to…"breaded"?) my favorite line from "Fishsticks" was probably Cartman: "Dude, if I’m gonna be creative, I can’t eat fruit." You can watch "Fishsticks" in its entirety at South Park Studios.

UPDATE: Kanye responds in all caps in his most upstanding blog item to date! [Kanye's blog]

"I GOT A LONG ROAD AHEAD OF ME TO MAKE PEOPLE BELIEVE I’M NOT ACTUALLY A HUGE DOUCHE BUT I’M UP FOR THE CHALLENGE. I’M SURE THE WRITERS AT SOUTH PARK ARE REALLY NICE PEOPLE IN REAL LIFE. THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO DRAW MY CREW. THAT WAS PRETTY FUNNY ALSO!! I’M SURE THERE’S GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN THIS… THAT’S HOW YOU KNOW IT’S ME!"

Amy Poehler reaches sitcom stardom: Which 'SNL' regular should be next?

Jasonsudeikis_lAfter seven-and-a-half years at Saturday Night Live, Amy Poehler has made "The Leap." With tonight’s premiere of NBC’s Parks and Recreation, the funny-lady now has 22 minutes to fill with laughs each week and will face the inevitable comparisons to Thursday-night neighbor Tina Fey.

If Poehler’s show succeeds, other SNL regulars could be up for television shows of their own. But which cast members really have the chops?

Kristin Wiig could simultaneously carry three weekly sitcoms, but after her hilarious cameos in Knocked Up, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and Adventureland (plus her role in the upcoming Mike Judge comedy Extract), she’s probably destined for success on the big-screen.

Jason Sudeikis (pictured), though, is perfectly positioned for sitcom stardom. The handsome comic is reminiscent of a young Dan Aykroyd, and he was excellent as Liz Lemon’s affable beau, Floyd, on 30 Rock. If NBC ever needs a spin-off, I’m sold on one about his “Michael Clayton of Cleveland” character.  Maybe Floyd quits the law firm to open the city’s first IKEA…and hilarity ensues.

Bill Hader would make a freaky high school chemistry teacher, with or without a Breaking Bad-esque crystal meth angle, and Casey Wilson and Michaela Watkins could team-up in a Cagney & Lacey-like farce. So, which SNL cast member are you hoping gets the next sitcom showcase?

'Nemesis': Superadorable superhero short film

Part gentle bromance, part superhero musing, "Nemesis," a student film from Norway, is sweet and funny…and subtly, quite touching. I can’t remember the last time I watched an eight-minute video on YouTube, but this is totally worth it. You win again, Norwegian film students!

I particularly like that he’s watching Heroes.

Mike Judge's 'Extract' trailer: This could be really funny

Categories: PopWatch Previewer

Extract (in theaters Sept. 4)

Plot: A working stiff (Jason Bateman) deals with everyman issues like grouchy coworkers, a cooled-off marriage, and a tempting temp (Mila Kunis).

Looks like: Office Space meets the chocolate sketch from I Love Lucy.

Verdict: With Bateman on familiar ground as an exasperated mensch and writer-director Mike Judge returning to his Office Space hijinks, Extract could manufacture some pretty big laughs.

How about it, PopWatchers? Is this the next Office Space? And what do you think of Ben Affleck’s stoner-dude sidekick?

AMC's B-Movie Classics: Are you watching?

Categories: Tech

Need a little schlock to start your day? AMCTV.com has just launched B-Movie Classics (BMC, for short), offering full streaming versions of trashterpieces like Teenage Caveman (1958) and Saga of the Viking Women (1957). But before you write these all off as reject-bin curios, consider this: The collection includes movies by horror gurus Roger Corman (Little Shop of Horrors) and John Carpenter (Halloween), whose works inspired the likes of Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, and Quentin Tarantino. And we’re pretty sure 1957′s Dragstrip Girl (embedded below) was the basis for Rachel Getting Married. In spirit, at least…

So check it out and let us know…Is this a treasure trove of hidden gems, or just a way for AMC to throw out its trash?

Clip du Jour: Conan O'Brien's 'In the Year 2000' (David Duchovny edition)

Categories: Clip du Jour

Looking back at these "In the Year 2000" bits, it turns out Conan wasn’t much of a prognosticator. Though he did portend a certain something about recovering sex addict David Duchovny, who sat in for the segment embedded below, with the prediction that in the year 2000, "Women will lose interest in David Duchovny when it’s revealed that ‘Duchovny’ is the Russian word for syphilis."

Please note: David Duchovny does not have syphilis. That we know of.
