Demetri Martin: Does he have what it takes to be a movie star?

Filed under: Movies and tagged: ,

Demetrimartin_lIn February, he launched his own sketch show on Comedy Central, Important Things With Demetri Martin. March brought a peek at his first big-screen lead role in Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock (pictured), out this summer. And now it’s been announced that the mop-top comedy whiz will be acting opposite Brad Pitt in Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming Moneyball. It’s a good thing he’s ambidextrous; Demetri Martin must need both hands to field all the offers coming his way in Hollywood.

But does the comedian have what it takes to cut it as a big-screen star? Aside from bit parts in The Rocker and Analyze That, Martin doesn’t have any real movie credits at this point. And he rarely strays too far from his trademark deadpan persona in skits on his show.

Still, something tells us Martin is going to be around for a while. He certainly wouldn’t be the first brainy stand-up to jump onto the A-List; the careers of Steve Martin, Bill Murray, and Robin Williams speak for themselves. And while I’m not a huge fan of his TV series, anyone can recognize that it takes a huge amount of focus and talent to pull off a one-man show like his. Compared to that, the movie biz must seem like a piece of cake.

So, PopWatchers, is Demetri Martin on his way to A-List cinemetic glory? Or will he eventually just be another name on the list of "Next Big Things" past?

Google's new similar images search lookin' good

Tagged:

Google has launched another shmantzy search feature: similar image. It’s a visual search tool that lets you sorts images by how much they look alike, rather than just that they have matching keywords. Instead of refining your search by adding more terms, you find a thumbnail you like and click "similar image" to see more results. It’s still in its not-fully-functional labs stage (though I sort of don’t trust Google’s distinctions there — Gmail has been in beta since God was a baby), but it’s a fun tool, and I’m guessing it’ll be integrated with the regular image search sooner rather than later.

¿Les gusta, PopWatchers? What do you want Google to come up with next?

Debra Messing returning to NBC. Sean Hayes, where you at?

Filed under: Television and tagged: ,

Debramessing_lWill & Grace‘s Debra Messing is reuniting with the writer/producers of The Starter Wife for a new NBC comedy. The untitled pilot is one of many incorporating the current economy into its plot:Messing will play a laid-off CEO who struggles with her new role as a full-timewife and mother, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This sounds great for her: She does smart-but-flustered so well.

This got me thinking: We know that Eric McCormack has a pilot at ABC: He’ll play a heart surgeon with a newborn and a friend whose kids have already left the nest. We’re watching (or not watching) Megan Mullally in ABC’s In the Motherhood. But where is Sean Hayes at? He’s been doing movies (Soul Men, The Bucket List) and theater (Damn Yankees with 30 Rock‘s Jane Krakowski). But I think we need him back on weekly TV. We can’t survive on Will & Grace reruns alone.

Any suggestions for a Hayes series? And what do you think of this new Messing show? Will you be watching?

'Caprica' on DVD: Does the pilot fill the 'Battlestar' void?

Hey, boys and girls! Still fiending for that Battlestar Galactica fix almost a full month after the series finale? Well, then, today’s your lucky day, as the two-hour pilot for the prequel series Caprica is on DVD as of…now! What’s that? You wanna know how it is? I’m glad you asked…a psuedo-spoilery review, after the (FTL) jump.

'American Idol': What should the Top 7 sing for Disco Night?

Filed under: American Idol and tagged:

Americanidoltop7_lPrepare for some couch-dancing, Idoloonies! That is, if things go well on tonight’s disco-themed performance episode of American Idol. Of course, if the top 7 are stupefyingly uncreative –  or limited to the same tiny list of songs the Idol producers seem destined to hear on the show over and over and over — then we’ll be hearing three Donna Summer tunes, three tracks off the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, and Danny Gokey’s cover of "Grease."  And I’ll be dialing 1-800-Head-in-the-Oven! But why choose pessimism when blinding, delusional optimism can keep a spring in your step till Ryan Seacrest gets all up in your face come 8 p.m. EDT? Here’s my Disco Night request list for the remaining finalists. Ch-ch-ch-ch-check it out, then post picks of your own in the comments section below.

Adam Lambert: Sylvester’s "Do You Wanna Funk" or Musique’s "In the Bush"
Allison Iraheta: Indeep’s "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" or Loleatta Holloway’s "Runaway"
Anoop Desai: KC and the Sunshine Band’s "Keep It Comin’ Love" or France Joli’s "Come to Me"
Danny Gokey: Cheryl Lynn’s "Got to Be Real" or Patrick Hernandez’s "Born to Be Alive"
Kris Allen: Andrea True Connection’s "More More More" or Odyssey’s "Native New Yorker"
Lil Rounds: First Choice’s "Let No Man Put Asunder" or Alicia Bridges’ "I Love the Nightlife (Disco ‘Round)"
Matt Giraud: The Gap Band’s "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" or Machine’s "There But for the Grace of God Go I"

'Bones' recap: Goofy done right

This is what I want from a lighter episode of Bones: A fast pace, some fun for everyone, and Booth still wearing a suit. Thank you! So the team attended the wake of 50-year-old Jeffersonian colleague Hank, who died of heart failure from a congenital defect — or so we thought until Brennan attempted to pay her respects (to a fabulous Danny Elfman-esque soundtrack) and realized that he’d been murdered. Booth didn’t want to believe her because he has respect for the dead — unless they owe him $20 from the fantasy football league — but his attempt to silence Brennan failed. ("Drink up, will ya?" "Why?" "’Cause I’m hoping you’re gonna pass out.")

I’m not sure which physical comedy bit I enjoyed more: Booth coaching Brennan to put on a sad face (which she was incapable of because she was happy that a murder investigation had interrupted the mourning) or Brennan using the wrong hand gesture to tell Booth that the undertaker and widow were having sex. I’m thinking the latter. Her enthusiasm won me over. I must have still been giddy because I wasn’t even bothered by the RIDICULOUS sight of Brennan and Booth stealing the body, which Hodgins saw through a window as he gave a toast to Hank. How much had Booth had to drink to go along with that plan? (He was packing a flask.) All I kept thinking was that Angela would not be happy when she found out that they used her car to transport the body back to the Jeffersonian so Cam could find the evidence needed to get an injunction to stop the cremation of the body.

Clip du jour: Jeff Goldblum does rope tricks!

Apparently, my mother didn’t watch Late Show with David Letterman last night, or I would’ve already gotten a call this morning recapping Jeff Goldblum’s appearance — which featured rope tricks. Goldblum, according to my mother, is "neat." I prefer the term "awesome." Regardless, I appreciate the Law & Order: Criminal Intent star thinking outside the box, and encourage other celebrities to follow suit. What’s the best hidden talent you’ve seen a celeb unveil on a talk show?

'Idolatry': Michael Johns talks about his new record, then rocks the EW hallway!

A few weeks ago, American Idol‘s season 7 standout Michael Johns stopped by the Idolatry studios (aka the cubicle area outside my office) to talk about what we can expect from his upcoming debut album, why he’s hoping to remind the Idol machine that there’s more to rock music than the Chris Daughtry sound, and how he came to collaborate with A-list songwriter Diane Warren. And when he was all done, Michael grabbed a stool and his acoustic guitar and performed a cover of the "To Love Somebody" right in the middle of our hallway. Press play below to check out our interview (with Michael’s rendition of the Bee Gees’ classic ballad streaming immediately afterward).

Would you look at the date? We almost forgot. (Ha!)

I never start watching Dancing With the Stars on time, because you can honestly zip through ABC’s ridiculous 8:00-9:32 p.m. recording in about 40 minutes. So I’m psyched to have instead caught Sunday’s Family Guy, featuring one of the show’s best song-and-dance numbers to date, before finally pressing play on DANCMSTR and his flock of sparkly sheep. Behold "Bag of Weed" below. Be sure to wave to Woody Harrelson!

Discounted Reese’s Eggs go super well with this clip, man. Just letting you know. Happy holidays.

Phil Keoghan blogs 'The Amazing Race': episode 9

Philkeoghan_l_2And then there were four. We now have a really strong group of Teams set to battle each other for the $1 million prize. I love when we get to the point in the show when Racers start to realize they actually might have a shot to win this thing. It comes down to who can put it all together for the final stretch, who has the stamina to keep racing full speed ahead after almost a month on the road, who can remain focused with thepressure of $1 million staring them in the eye, and who can put aside any personal feelings about their competitors and simply run the Race of their lives. Easier said than done.

Quick thoughts on the four remaining Teams:

Victor/Tammy: Smart, analytical, and competitive, but do they have the street smarts to pull it off?

Luke/Margie and LaKisha/Jen: I’ll put these two together following last night’s meltdown. Both are strong competitors and the partners communicate really well, but will the teams’ feud with each other get in the way? Also, Margie and Luke have played out of their heads the past two weeks — can they maintain that level of play?

Cara /Jaime: Strong team, but can they get through the rest of the Race without coming to blows with the locals? Case in point, Jaime yelling at the man during last night’s dancing challenge because he couldn’t understand English. Yelling at someone who doesn’t understand your language when you’re in their country — are you serious?

After all these weeks of telling you about the "Most Memorable Mat Meltdown" of all time, we finally got to see it last night. What an episode. The throwdown between Luke and Margie and LaKisha and Jen was so intense. All of us in production knew that both teams were really going head-to-head throughout the entire leg, but no one could have predicted it would come down to a foot race to the mat and one of the most emotionally charged Pit Stops I have ever been a part of. It was downright uncomfortable.
