Food Network's new show: I don't know, what WOULD Brian Boitano make?

Filed under: Food and Drink and tagged: ,

There is no explaining the inherent, gut-level appeal of some pop cultural artifacts, and that is why we love them — I am looking at you, Lifetime movies and Dancing With the Stars. Joining those lofty ranks is now the Food Network’s What Would Brian Boitano Make?, announced as part of its upcoming slate at its upfront presentation today. (We’ve already registered our excitement about their Jeff Corwin project.) The program, premiering in August, will do pretty much what you think — show the former Olympic figure skater entertaining guests and making stuff for them.

But it begs many questions, foremost among them: What would Brian Boitano make? I’m thinking maybe some seared salmon or chicken quesadillas or turkey burgers, but that’s mostly because I’m thinking about dinner right now. What would you like him to make? And what other random athletes and/or celebrities would you like to see making things on the Food Network? I’m lobbying for Lisa Rinna.

While you ponder those vast questions, please enjoy the clip from South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut that inspired this show’s name:

'American Idol': Chat live about the Disco Night proceedings!

Filed under: American Idol and tagged:

Hello, fellow Idoloonies! Please use this blog post to chat liiiive! about Disco Night on American Idol. I’ll be back shortly after 9 p.m. with my snap judgment, and again at the crack of dawn with my full TV Watch recap. In the interim, a poem for you all (and an interview with the un-disco-y Scott MacIntyre after the jump):

Hide the children, plug your ears
It’s Disco Night on Idol
In past years this theme tended to
Make folks feel homicidal

Remember sexy Haley
Tried to turn the beat around

She caterwauled and howled
Drove said beat into the ground

Or how ’bout poor Josh Gracin
Tackling funky "Celebration"

What he did to Kool and Gang
Was an abomination

And then there’s Jasmine Trias
Panting through "It’s Raining Men"

Just play the YouTube version
You’ll taste bile once again

So let’s hope the top seven
Learn from Idols’ past mistakes
If Lil tries Donna Summer
My fist will clench and shake

Let’s hold back on the Bee Gees
That goes for Kris and Danny
Adam, Matt, and Noop Dawg too
Or we’ll spank you on your fannies

Perhaps tonight won’t be so bad
We’ll have to wait and see
I’ll squeal inside if someone sings
"You Dropped a Bomb on Me"

Fred Segal show on Bravo: Is retail the new reality?

Tagged:

Fredsegal_lAs we mentioned today, Bravo is producing a reality show about the everyday drama at the Fred Segal store in Santa Monica. (Pants unfolded! Shirts obscenely overpriced! The horror!) My first impression, besides the nagging sense that Bravo is scrambling to find the next Project Runway, was: Who on earth wants to watch this? I visited the store last year, and while I did get a very cute necklace there, I didn’t leave thinking, I wish that experience could have lasted 22 more minutes. Maybe there was some behind-the-register madness I missed out on, but having worked retail in the past, it’s hard for me to imagine anything beyond snooty customers, dressing room mishaps, and "forgotten" opening shifts being the crux of the show.

It also got me wondering/worrying that if this thing takes off, could retail be the next reality craze? I get this terrible feeling that MTV could follow suit with shows about the goings-on at Abercrombie & FItch, Hollister, and/or Wet Seal. What about you, PopWatchers? Does the Fred Segal show interest you? Or is Bravo grasping at straws? Which stores which you like to see get a reality show? We can only begin to imagine the shennanigans at a Build-a-Bear Workshop!

'Lost' star Michael Emerson really can make anything scary!

Filed under: Lost and tagged:

So Michael "Benjamin Linus" Emerson was on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon the other day, and he was completely awesome.

Crazy, huh? What else would you want to see him read? Also, is Jimmy Fallon the world’s most excited human? I find his enthusiasm charming.

Happy Birthday Charles Grodin!

Or should we say, Jonathan "The Duke" Mardukas? Yes, the often cranky, always delightful Charles Grodin turns 74 today. And we wouldn’t want to let the day pass without at least one video tribute. We thought long and hard about dusting off a clip from Beethoven’s 2nd, or the pint-sized Martin Short epic Clifford. But in the end, we went (as we always do) with a choice scene from 1988′s buddy-film classic, Midnight Run. Watch and be convinced of the fact that Robert De Niro never had a better costar than the cartoonish curmudgeon who’s our birthday boy of the day. Enjoy! Although be warned, there’s some spicy language, so just to be safe (NSFW)…

'Idolatry': Scott MacIntyre on his sense of humor and post-'Idol' plan for radio domination

Filed under: American Idol and tagged: ,

Just because he was the undeniable nice guy of American Idol‘s eighth season, don’t think for a second that Scott MacIntyre hasn’t got swagger. Check out the piano man’s three-part Idolatry exit interview below, in which Scott theorizes how he won over fans via "clever, diplomatic" banter with the judges, reveals which finalist snatched his original song choice for Grand Ole Opry night, explains why he feels he excelled — while his competitors struggled — during "Top Downloads" night, and shares his academic formula for writing "radio-friendly" music.

Pet Shop Boys come quickly. Namely, today

Hooray! The Pet Shop Boys’ 10th studio album, Yes, comes out today in the U.S. (Read EW’s B+ review.) If it’s that kind of day and you want to pretend you’re bouncing around in a pinball machine full of rudimentary clip art — in other words, if you want to celebrate 4/20 a little late — press play below for the animated video of the Boys’ beautiful singe "Love Etc." I dare you to not totally grin when the Pac Man eats the heart and it explodes into a bunch of other hearts. It’s a Sin if you don’t.

Anyone else wish there was an app for that?

PopWatch Confessional: The book that made you cry

If_i_stay_l

Not that I read a lot, but up until a few days ago, only two books ever made me cry: Eugene O’Kelly’s memoir Chasing Daylight, which I read as someone in my family was going through a similar illness (I’m grateful that our story continues), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (perhaps because I could picture "that scene" so vividly, it was like I’d already seen the movie — and films frequently destroy me).

But then I read If I Stay, the young adult novel by Gayle Forman that Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke is set to bring to the big screen, and I had to add another title to the list. It’s about Mia, a 17-year-old girl from Oregon who gets into a car accident with her parents and younger brother. The choice of whether she stays (lives) or goes (dies) is hers and plays out over a 196-page outerbody experience that you’ll want to read in one sitting. At least, that’s how I did it. On a crowded train. Hoping no one saw how many times my eyes welled up (starting at page 18) until a single tear fell down my left cheek. Though we reveal the reason why her decision is so difficult in our review of the book, I’d recommend not spoiling it for yourself.

Your turn. Which books have made you cry?

'True Blood' season 2 preview clip: Vampy

Filed under: Television and tagged: ,

Hey, a clip from the new season of True Blood! I’m torn between being psyched and being a little embarrassed that I’m psyched because…True Blood isn’t always that good. It can be very sexy, and I have enjoyed it here and there, and Tara is aaaaawesome, but this clip bring back some bad memories:

…like how ear-assaultingly awful those accents are. This is worse than the cockney accents on Gossip Girl last night. Or how confusing Bill and Sookie’s relationship is: How can someone who’s over 100 years old be in love with someone so immature? I know she’s supposed to seem sweet and virginal and all, but she comes across as incapable of adult-level reasoning. "I’m WALKING!" stomp stomp stomp? Through the forest of goblins? She’s supposed to be our strong-willed heroine, but sometimes I think she could lose a head-to-head IQ test against Heidi Montag.

That said, the clip sure was spooky — TB does moody and supernatural really well — and I am incredibly curious what the badly manicured woodland beast is.

What about you, PopWatch nation? Can’t wait to sink your teeth into the new season of True Blood? Or does True Blood just bite?

'Lego Rock Band' so far does not include 'Brick House'

Filed under: Videogames and tagged:

Lrb_screen09_crop_wave3Lego and Rock Band: Two great tastes that taste great togeths? I vote yes. Hells yes. The latest baby in the cheeky Lego videogame family is a brick-and-mortar-more brick version of the popular Rock Band franchise. It should be out in time for the holidays.

According to a press release, this release includes "Song 2," "Kung Fu Fighting," "The Final Countdown," "Boys and Girls," and "So What." Uh…how do you not have "Brick House"? Is "Brick" too big a bummer? Was "Another Brick in the Wall" too tough to adapt? The Cowboy Junkies’ "Working on a Building" seems obvious, though I’d settle for "Building a Mystery." If only there were a song called "what happened to the one effing piece I was looking for," Lego Rock Band would really be in business. Also, they have to include "Fell In Love with a Girl," right?

Okay, PopWatchers, snap this into place: What songs do you want to see and hear on Lego Rock Band?
