'American Idol': What did you think of tonight's double elimination?

Filed under: American Idol and tagged:

First of all, let’s talk about that "Legends of Disco" medley, or whatever it was they were calling it. Wait! On second thought, let’s not. [West Coast readers, there are SPOILERS ahead!] Instead, let’s focus on the positives of tonight’s Disco Week results telecast. Should we talk about the return of the lip-synched group performance? Or the fact that the vocals during the Ford Music Video might as well have been recorded by 5 Macs and a couple of PCs? Or maybe we should just focus on the fact that Allison Iraheta inexplicably found herself in the bottom three — again! — while the meditative Danny Gokey remained comfortably ensconced on the Plus Couches of Safety. Okay, clearly I’m not doing well with the glass-half-full shtick. I’m gonna go write my full TV Watch recap and try to work it out, dawgs. In the meantime, chat amongst yourselves in the comments section below. Oh, and for those of you who are wondering, tonight’s eliminated contestants have names that (sort of) rhyme with Shrill Hounds and A Loop West-Siiiiide!

DVD to Blu-ray: Feeling the pressure to make the switch?

Tagged:

Bluraydvd_lI’m not sure why I’m resisting the switch to Blu-ray. I have an HDTV, and my DVD player is on the verge of crapping out, so, technically, I could upgrade to a machine that handles both formats with little to no guilt. I guess it’s because I feel like it’s being forced on me. I get press release after press release announcing the titles hitting Blu-ray, as though it’s just assumed that I have one.

Today, my battle came to a head in a Blockbuster store. I had to go rent five Matthew McConaughey movies (don’t ask) and because the store had to display all of its Blu-ray titles prettily, the older films on DVD were now just stacked in horizontal piles on the shelves. The alphabetization was so bad that I actually decided to accept a salesman’s offer to help look for my five Matthew McConaughey movies. He told me that it was his second day on the job, which, I’m assuming, is why he didn’t feel comfortable enough to harass me about my picks. Netflix has never looked so good.

Is your Blockbuster or local video store all Blu-ray’d out? Have you made the switch? If not, what’s stopping you? (I think part of my problem is also that even though the machines are dual compatible now, one day, they won’t be. I don’t want to sit and look longingly at my Kids in the Hall boxed set like I do at the VHS copy of the 1986 movie Separate Vacations that I bought even though I don’t actually own a working VCR.)

Tom Cruise has too many movies on his plate: Let's help him choose!

Tomcruise_l As EW.com and Variety have been reporting, Tom Cruise’s cup overfloweth something fierce of late. With as many as seven possible movies in the hopper, he recently had to drop two high-profile projects — a rom-com called Lost for Words and a drama called The 28th Amendment. But that still leaves at least five to choose from, and since we here at PopWatch Central consider ourselves a full-service entertainment blog, we figured we’d offer a little unsolicited advice to help Mr. Cruise make up his rakishly handsome noggin.

Motorcade
THE PITCH A group of terrorists attack the President’s motorcade in Los Angeles. Len Wiseman (Live Free or Die Hard, Underworld) is attached to direct.
PRO It’s officially cool to want to root for the President again, which may be why this movie’s the ostensible front-runner in the What’s Tom Cruise’s Next Project? derby — which counts for something, right?
CON It’s also the project with the most questions-marks around it: Who would Cruise play? The President? The secret service agent? The head of the terrorists? The Secretary of the Interior? Could this movie possibly top the best Presidential assassin thriller of all time, 1993′s In the Line of Fire? And haven’t they already done this on 24? Like, a gajillion times?
VERDICT Leave the Presidential heroics to Jack Bauer.

'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire' returning for its 10th anniversary: Yay (final answer)!

Filed under: Television and tagged: ,

ABC announced this afternoon that it’s bringing back the Regis Philbin-hosted, primetime version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire for a 10th anniversary two-week run. Just as we suspected!

Starting Sunday, Aug. 9, ABC will air 11 episodes of its veteran quiz series, and given the other primetime game show options, this is a shockingly pleasant step in the right direction. Plus…this is still one of my all-time favorite game show moments:

Okay, PopWatchers, are you going to be phoning a friend to tell them? Or are you running for the hills, final answer?

One more 'Lost' fix: The new podcast hits early

Filed under: Lost and tagged: ,

Yep, me again, blathering about Lost. Again. But this time, I come with something somewhat substantial to fill your Lost void. ABC is planning to post the show’s weekly video podcast at abc.com tomorrow, but a little bird just told me that if you go over to YouTube, you can watch it, like, now! (See it embedded below.) I can’t promise you that you’ll glean any insight about next week’s eagerly anticipated episode, "The Variable," beyond the fact that it happens to mark Lost’s 100th episode. In fact, I can kinda promise you that you’ll learn nothing besides that fact. But it does feature Evangeline Lilly ruminating on the whole Jack vs. Sawyer debate for Kate. Doc Jensen readers will know that the love triangle (or quadrangle, if you toss Juliet in the mix) is, for me, one of the least interesting aspects of Lost. But I must admit, I got a chuckle out of hearing Lilly say the word "Jater." So check it out. Besides, what else is there to do today? (And remember: a new Doc Jensen column on Friday.)

Rosanna Arquette in latest 'American Pie' direct-to-DVD movie: Oh, the music definitely died

Rosannaarquette_lReps for Rosanna Arquette confirmed to EW that the actress will be in the latest direct-to-DVD installment of American Pie. Which raises two questions: One…they’re still making American Pie movies? And two, what the fart is Rosanna Arquette doing in them?

Look, I love a gross-out teen comedy probably more than anyone (paging the maturity department, Dr. Lyons to the maturity department), but the American Pie franchise needs to be put out of its misery. Hahaha, poop, breasts, boners, etc — can the Internet not meet our needs on this front? I posit that it can.

But more importantly, Rosanna Arquette, I know times are tough all over, but…a direct-to-DVD movie? A fourth d-t-DVD American Pie movie? You desperately sought Susan! You were all kinds of racy in Crash! You were so crazy on The L Word and Grey’s Anatomy. You were in Pulp Freakin’ Fiction! Just…epic sadface on this development. Please do a funky indie movie — though I’d settle for another Lifetime movie — instead.

We do want to know, however: What Arquette fan out there is psyched to hear this news because you are one of the people who actually buys American Pie straight-to-DVD movies?

Paula Abdul on 'Nightline': 'I've never been drunk'

Tomorrow night, Paula Abdul will appear on ABC’s Nightline. And you know what that means, PopWatchers! That means it’s time to revisit that old chestnut of a Paula question: Has she ever abused prescription drugs or been drunk on the air? That oldie-but-goodie was a hot topic back in 2007, when the Idol judge appeared on a morning show slurring her words and acting all loop-de-loopy. And we saw much of the same behavior on her short-lived Bravo reality series, Hey Paula (which I totally watched, albeit often with a hand over my eyes. There’s only so much trainwreck a girl can take — even a cynical one like me! Check out a clip below.) Of course, in this latest interview, Nightline‘s Cynthia McFadden wastes no asking Abdul to straight up, now, tell her is she had a Rx or alkie problem.

An excerpt from tomorrow’s interview:

McFadden: "So let me just ask you the question straight up, absolutely crystalclear: you have not abused prescription drugs?"

Abdul: "Never."

McFadden: “You have not consumed alcohol before going on the air?”

Abdul: "Never. I’ve never been drunk in my life. I don’t like it. It’s not my thing. Spending money on clothes and shoes, that’s another thing."

Given some of Paula’s infamous on-air behavior, take a moment to contemplate that exchange, and then let us know if you’ll be watching the interview tomorrow and whether you’re kind of sick of the questions about her drug and booze abuse.

Carrie Ann Inaba blogs 'DWTS,' week 7

Carrie_ann_week7_2What a week! All the tables turned, new leaders emerged, and the whole leader board got "a shaking up." And that is why I LOVE THIS SEASON! I knew it! I had a feeling all along that the season was going to be very interesting and highly competitive as we approached the end of the season. Let’s start with Chuck and Julianne. I am so happy for them that they finally had a breakthrough. I always felt that he had an ease of movement that if he engaged his spirit and confidence behind it — along with the training and technique he could tackle if he set his mind to it — that he could do well. It was as if he finally decided that he was just going to go for it — no excuses. That is such a wonderful thing to watch. A real breakthough. And we got to experience it right there with him. Congratulations Chuck and Julianne!

'The Hills' starlet L.C. on 'Family Guy': Maybe she is a genius

Per Kristin at E!, Lauren Conrad, one of my favorite "bish, please" face-makers, will guest-star on the May 3 episode of Family Guy as…no, not herself. Quite the contrary: She’ll be playing an intellectual genius. Conrad, or as I like to call her in official television reports such as this one, C., apparently hired an acting coach and researched the "history and theorems and conductors" about which she’ll yammer on in the episode so that her lines would sound more authentic. Hilarity! Watch a preview clip, below. (You’ll recognize her brilliant last line from every single Hills scene in existence.) Anyone else want to applaud C.’s willingness to sleep with Brian the Dog, not to mention her thoughtful decision to get a substantial boob job before appearing on an animated program?
