I’m not one to maintain a massive DVD collection, but I do feel an obligation to keep certain classics around for my children, such as Rudy, Broadcast News, (the original) Planet of the Apes, The Natural, the first three installments of Rocky, The Godfather I and II, and my all-time favorite, Just One of the Guys. On June 2, I’ll be sure to add a special DVD edition of Eddie Murphy’s Delirious to my small but very important library. Granted, pretty much all of Murphy’s brilliant standup from that memorable concert is available on YouTube, but that won’t stop me from handing over the suggested retail price of $29.97 just so I enjoy Murphy’s spot-on impersonations of Michael Jackson, Ricky Ricardo, and Stevie Wonder for the 148th time.
Without fail, though, it’s Murphy’s hilarious (and NSFW) take on James Brown that gets me every time:
Man, that man was a comic genius. I wish he’d come back to see us. What about you, dear PopWatchers? Do you miss this potty-mouthed cut-up in the tight leather pants?

why is this so special? you can get the original on DVD at Wal-Mart for $7.50. Can imagine what it has to make it worth $30. The $7.50 version works just fine for me!
Oh Eddie Murphy, how we miss you…
He should really stop doing crappy kids movies and start going back to this. Adult comedies. And we saw on Dreamgirls he can do drama too. He’s so talented, it’s a shame he sucks today.

I really miss Eddys old antics. he nneds to bring it back!
For your children? Really?! I loved this movie, but for every brilliant piece (“i got some ice cream”) there is one that’s cringe-worthy, and even if i recall correctly, quite virulently homophobic. A LOL guilty pleasure, but hardly a classic to pass down…
“I got some ice cream! I got some ice cream!”
not to mention how HOMOPHOBIC it is…great thing to pass on to your kids genius!
He was so much funnier before he became family friendly.
Hooray! Thank you EW and especially all your gay staffers and editors for choosing to commemorate this pinnacle in history when the AIDS joke became an acceptable part of pop culture. You should be so proud!
Eddie Murphy has since retracted the comments about gays and AIDS. But back in the day, that’s how a lot of people (unfortunately) thought about those subjects. Does that make it okay? No, but it is what it is.
I wish Eddie Murphy would go back to stand up, if only for a one-time HBO special or something. I’d love to hear him now, as an adult with a family and full career behind him, and get his take on things. I’m sure it wouldn’t be as blue as “Delirious” or as family-friendly as a lot of his movies of late, but I am sure that it would be hysterical.
You ain’t got no ice cream. You didn’t get none. You didn’t get none. Wanna lick?… Syke!
Lucky for you, GiantAsianMan, that all your friends weren’t dying at the time this movie was roaring across the country – instead of it being a quaint relic of olden days like now. Murphy chose to write that material and the producers chose to include it in the movie. Don’t try to excuse them because “that’s what people thought, back then.” It has hardly changed that much now, and Murphy & Co. did a lot to help prevent any progress or sense of urgency back in 1984 (when Pres. Reagan refused to even say the word “AIDS”).
This is by far the best stand up Eddie Murphy as ever done… Raw couldn’t compare
Oh how I miss Eddie Murphy stand up.
Ice cream! Eddie Murphy should just do another stand up tour if he’s afraid to do a movie that actually appeals to people over the age of 10.

And guess what? These jokes are STILL a part of popular culture. They will always be. Why? It’s called having a sense of humor. No one can say they have not ever made jokes or laughed at jokes at the expense of a demographic that’s not their own. Eddie should never have felt he had to apologize for his comedy routines. But I guess he’s Mr Family-entertainment now, so who knows.
