'Scrubs,' it's time to pull the plug

ABC is in talks to renew Scrubs for another year, minus Zach Braff and creator Bill Lawrence, which isn’t so shocking since Lawrence has been talking about that scenario for months. I say this as a hardcore, extremely devoted Scrubs fan, who has seen every episode and heard every DVD commentary track, who has the soundtrack to the musical episode on her iPod and can sing all of it, who almost died from joy when she interviewed Lawrence a few years ago: Please don’t do this.

Enough’s enough. I rewatched this season this weekend, and as much as I enjoyed it, it’s definitely a farewell tour — to tack on one more is to become Cher, and not in the cool ways. For better or worse, Scrubs is about JD; a JD-less season is the telequivalent of one drink too many. Go forth, Scrubs writers, and make new hilarious shows!  We’ll watch them, and ABC needs them!  This show has had a good life, but that time is over now, and it’s time for a new never-quite-a-hit-but-still-so-awesome king to emerge.

ABC overlords, Bill Lawrence, hear my humble plea to go out on a high note. Like this, my all-time favorite Scrubs moment:

What do you think, PopWatchers? Are you hoping for One More Season? Or are you content to close the doors to Sacred Heart?

I’d have to agree on this one. I had no idea that Bill Lawrence would have no part in more seasons. So please pull the plug. I’m with Mags all the way!

Totally agree. I’m a huge fan, own four seasons on DVD, watch the syndicated episodes. But the magic is gone. This season is fine, but not nearly what it once was. The actors and writers seem tired.
    Time to let go.

I totally agree. Season 8 was awesome but you know that if they try to carry this show on without the interns it will be terrible. My Full Moon proved that all too well. We know what this show is like when it’s bad… and it’s almost unwatchable for me when it is. I can’t imagine how bad a season 9 without Zach Braff would be.

Totally, totally agree. And thanks for posting this clip. I had been driving myself nuts trying to find that song since the last time I saw it on TV. What a great scene. The show should quit while it’s still good.

I agree as well. This season hasn’t been as good and I really don’t want it to become ER-like. It was a good show bc of the main characters and I don’t think there are enough stories to maintain more seasons without them.

I ADORE Scrubs and think that it is one of the best, most underrated shows that has ever been on television. NBC never gave that show the chance or the press that it deserved and I was so happy when ABC picked it up, as the show would get the send-off it so richly deserves. As much as I will genuinely miss all of the folks at Sacred Heart, I do think it is best to end it now, while Zach Braff and Bill Lawrence are still on board. I think the cast and crew should be commended for the work they have done. These fine folks will most certainly find other opportunities as their talent is undeniable!

I completely agree with everything you said, including your favorite moment. This season is clearly wishing farewell to the Sacred Heart gang. Let’s leave it at that.

Ditto. Never missed an episode. (Okay, except for the musical), but it’s time.

Keep the show going, the new interns are awesome.

I’d forgotten that scene, as hard as that is to believe. Great stuff. Is the female doctor in that clip (singing with Ted and Kelso) played by the same actress who plays Lady (the Janitor’s wife) now? They look just alike!

I agree – Scrubs is about JD. He narrates the show (except on a few occasions). Without him there is no show. Go out on a high note, not fizzling until no one is watching.

Other sources say Bill Lawerence is involved in renewal talks.

I will not watch “scrubs” without JD and bill lawrence. This season has been good, and it seems to be wrapping the show up. I hate the fact that they are trying to force feed us the new interns. I get it you want to keep the show going, but in all honesty the new interns kind of suck and the chemistry between each of them is non existant. Please just end the series so i can pick up the complete box set and be happy.

I don’t understand this at all. Scrubs has run for 8 seasons which is a great run, a run most shows would kill for. So what if it’s never been a blockbuster show like Friends? It has a devoted fan base and it’s been funny from start to finish– something almost no comedies can boast about. Just let it go!

I am on board with the sentiments here. It would feel so much more complete, like JD’s diary (without the unicorns), to have the show end with this season. This was JD’s story, and he’s moving on. I want to sit there and watch the show finish. I want to wipe away a few tears when the end credits roll, knowing that a great series has come to a final and satisfying close. And I want to revel in my geekery of having seen every single episode more than once (thank you Comedy Central).
