The prospect of playing Captain America seems to be growing on Matthew McConaughey – either through sheer repetition of his name in connection with the planned movie about the patriotic superhero, or because he’s actually grown as tired as we have of him playing doofy (if hot) dudes with commitment issues (who also at some point go shirtless). Does anyone else get the feeling in, say, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, that he’s thinking, "I still can’t believe they keep paying me for this, but what the hell"? As much as I wonder if we need still more comic book creations roaming our multiplexes, I enjoy a good superhero flick. (Hey, those Iron Man and Batman movies last summer weren’t bad, right? Hell, I even liked The Incredible Hulk okay.) And casting McConaughey could do a lot of good for everyone involved: It would attract female moviegoers who still swoon over his shirtless pics in Us Weekly, and it would put the right kind of guy — if you think back, you may remember a good actor lurking in McConaughey’s past, right around A Time to Kill — in the prime role. It would also give McConaughey something constructive to do besides getting third-rate romantic comedies greenlit by signing onto them indiscriminately. A win for us all!
What do you think, PopWatchers? Would McConaughey make a good Captain America? And would America benefit from McConaughey in the role?

LOL what a joke! God I hope this doesn’t happen. Worst casting since Topher Grace as Venom.

DOOOOO iiiiiiT Matthew McConaughey!!!
I’m not quite sure he could capture the essence that is needed for Cap, but he’s better than what the casting people get to play some characters. Example, Ray Stevenson as Frank Castle…blech.
I think it’s a totally smart idea on everyone’s part!
A little old, isn’t he? I mean, Cap is supposed to be a 4-F draftee who took the super soldier serum. Did they draft 39-year-olds in WWII? If you’re going to go that old, I’d prefer Matt Damon.
This would be a horrible choice for anyone who knows the character. Steve Rogers aka Captain America was a young man(Late teens early twenties) when he became a super solider NOT 40!!! McConaughey is a good actor nothing against but Cap was from the Bronx and something tells me the Texas surfer can’t pull this off.
Here’s a peek at McConaughey’s other new project:

Why does it always have to be a big name? This would be as bad a decision as Ben Affleck playing Daredevil or at least Cage playing Ghost Rider. Get some young no-name who can act (as opposed to the young no-name who couldn’t act playing Superman).
Too old for the role. Plus he’s done enough fluff movies with his gazillion romcoms so my career advice is he needs to get back to drama like Time to Kill to earn respect again.
Ryan McPartlin, aka Captain Awesome on NBC’s Chuck, would be a better pick
Matthew McConaughey is now the male equivalent of Kate Hudson and Jennifer Aniston, pretty to look at, but that’s about it, as deep as the shallow end. They all can’t seem to transition from the cute girl/boy roles. Any role they’ve played in the past could have been played by a lamppost and the audience wouldn’t notice the difference. Don’t see either of these 3 acting in starring roles at the cineplex within the next 10 years.
Jennifer, pls consult with Marc Bernardin and the other geeks. Steve Rogers was a skinny art student from New York City who longed to fight in WW2 but was just too scrawny. He was convinced/lured into the Super Soldier project. He’s as far from jingoistic as can be imagined and still be a soldier literally wearing the Stars and Stripes. I know McConaughey has acting chops … but so far, accents have not been one of them.
When I first read the title of the article I laughed, but as I think about it more, it might actually be a good idea. I can see it. And it does have that, what are you thinking quality to it that makes it intriguing. I like it. I say do it.
It is sad that he indeed show acting chops back in the day and has squandered all of that after taking a hit of Mary and Juana while bongo-ing naked. Yes, he may have some looks and lots of people wouldn’t mind seeing his body in spandex but c’mon the frak on, he can’t pull this off.
Mr. Tall, I don’t think that Captain Awsome from Chuck can either.
I vote for Ben Foster, Brian Greenberg or better yet Logan Lerman.
Pretty awful. The actor should fit the character a lot better-like Tony Stark and Robert Downey Jr.
