'Drop Dead Fred' remake: Let's not flick boogers at it just yet

Glaaaadiooooolas?! Snotfaces, I am all over this remake of Drop Dead Fred starring Russell Brand on two conditions: One, they keep the gag where Fred’s face gets flattened out in the refrigerator (favorite!); and two, Phoebe Cates be involved at least in some capacity — we don’t see enough of her, and she is awesome.

Assuming those conditions are met, DDF is ruh-ruh-ripe for a remake. It’s…kind of awful. (EW gave it an F when it came out. Burn!) And it’s creepy, but not in a funny way. The original is tonally incoherent — is it supposed to be hilarious, or a really, really depressing story about the long-term effects of emotional abuse? Oh, both? — and nothing fully develops. So there’s definitely room for improvement.

At its core, though, there are plenty of fun and substantive ideas behind DDF: that our childhoods inform our adult behaviors; that the combination of imagination and ambition we embrace in our youth is important as we grow up, too; that a little rebellion here and there keeps us from being pod-people. Russell Brand is ideal as Fred 2.0: Uninhibited, probably irresponsible, but not an actual trouble-seeking idiot. (I’m in the minority here among DDF fans, but I really hope Fred is less of an a–hole in this one. Seriously, we’re supposed to root for him, except he tracks poop through the house? Uh, that’s not a childlike sense of whimsy!) I’m not sure I’d be behind anyone else as Fred — Brand seems totally right.

Who’s with me, PopWatchers? Are you ready for a remake of Drop Dead Fred?

I do think Brand is the perfect Fred. Out of the choices available today, no one comes close.

The sneering, leering Russell Brand makes my skin crawl, as did Rik Mayall as Drop Dead Fred. Brand and the remake should be perfect for each other. Here’s hoping it flops and Brand will finally crawl back under his rock and disappear forever.

wtf r u serious!! this mvie wont flop, beause its a great movie!! and russel brand will never disapper!! he is awesome!

  • Adam

As long as they keep the hilarious scene in the restaurant I’ll be happy.

I freakin’ love this movie. Don’t know why, but as a kid many of my favorite movies were like DDF…quarky, weird, strange sense of humor. I’d be fine with a remake…and actually Russell would be a perfect Fred.

I thought I was the only person in the world who had ever heard or, let alone seen, this movie! It’s so horrible! I would love to see Brand as Fred, he’s pretty much perfect for the part!

I LOVED Drop Dead Fred when I was kid and still do (oh yes, the DVD sits on my shelf). It’s so quirky and weird. I’d be for a remake if Brand was in it-I heart him the most!

I used to watch DDF constantly as a child and found it wondrous. I re watched it recently and realized how horrendous it really was, though I still find Fred hilarious and hot. The score really sucked though.
I bet Brand’ll do the Fred legacy some justice for a new generation. I approve.

As a kid, I LOVED this movie, but yeah, it is kind of terrible in a fantastic way. I wish Hollywood would leave my childhood alone! That said, Russell Brand would be pretty great in that part.

Wow! A movie no one cares about being remade with a star no one cares about! Sounds like a perfect movie not to watch! Just as long as they’re not talking about letting him remake Arthur anymore.

it is hardly a movie nobody cares about… it is cult and has hardcore fans. while it wasn’t a success commercially it has never been forgotten. I just can’t see Brand improving the film- the dark, edgy craziness of mayalls Fred is what made the film so intriguing to watch. But best film ever so lets hope it works out!

In my opinion Russell Brand cannot act. He plays himself in everything he does. Even when the character is written differently, they tailor it to be a “russell” type character. My fear is that Fred will get lost in Russell Brand’s antics and personality. drop dead russell brand.

I justed to watch this movie on a loop when I was younger. Why my parents let me watch it, i don’t know. I forgot that there was so much swearing.

  • Mike

Brand plays himself in everything he does? He’s only been in 1 movie.

    • Joe

Uh no, he has been in three, FSM, Get him to the Greek (botht he same character & both pretty much hat Russel is as a person, or at least was) as well as The Tempest which was accepted as an OK movie of the Shakespearean classic, however Brand was widely panned as pretty much being the worst actor in the whole thing…he was pretty much playing his onstage persona in that one too…not that I m a Brand hater, to me he his hit and miss
