'Last Cake Standing': When did I suddenly become obsessed with cake baking?

Bronwenwebercake_lLast night, I gleefully sidled up to the TV to watch the finale of the Food Network cake-baking competition show Last Cake Standing. I eagerly watched three bone-tired cake decorators create massive confections of cake and frosting to satisfy their "mystery client" — i.e. a group of sextuplets, two girls, four boys, all turning 16 and expecting their single collective birthday cake to reflect all of their impressively divergent interests ("computer," "soccer," "saxophone," "aeronautical engineering," etc.). This assignment came after a marathon week of cakery, whittling six competitors down to the final three for a $50,000 prize and the dubious title of "Best Cake Artist in America." Of the finalists, I was pulling most for Bronwen Weber (pictured), whose penchant for overly ambitious designs that are a bit weak on execution was balanced by her hilariously frank personali…

What the heck is happening to me?! When did agood quarter of my TV time become dedicated to watching people roll outa product called "fondant" that has apparently supplanted, you know, frosting as the specialty cake decorator’s covering of choice? When didI start growing as fond of the cast of Food Network’s Ace of Cakes as I am of the cast of 30 Rock or Lost? How did I become the kind of person who, after stumbling upon Jorge Garcia’s blog about the Lost 100th episode cake made by the peeps on Ace of Cakes, does a little dance in his desk chair?

I actually don’t even like large cakes all that much — I’mfar more of a cupcake or cookie kind of guy. And yet there I sit, making comments about "piping" and "gum paste" as if I have a flippin’clue what I’m even talking about, happy as a clam-shaped cake as Iwatch a grown man melt into a puddle of flop sweat over his sugar flowers. So tell me, PopWatchers, what random niche TV shows — be they aboutcake baking or otherwise — have you been obsessively watching in spiteof yourself?

For some reason, I keep watching the house buying/selling shows on HGTV, especially the ones with property virgins. I rent and have no urge to buy, but I can’t turn the damn things off! House #2 you fools!

  • Angela Martin

Who ended up winning the competition? I love watching those cake competition shows, and I totally forgot this was on last night.

I love the Food network but this was the first time I also found myself watching this Cake competition too. lol

Loved the competition. Better than ALOT of reality tv shows, infact better than Top Chef even. Watched the marathon for the irst time yesterday, amazing show.
    Angela Martin Mary Maher won.

Courtney totally got ripped off!! Mary’s cake simply wasn’t as good as Courtney’s, but what are you going to do. Kerry Vincent has never appreciated Courtney so Mary had a leg up on the competition. Mary’s cakes were good, Courtney’s were better.
Even in the explanation of why Mary won, Kerry Vincent basically admitted that she simply likes Mary better and therefore Mary won over Courtney.
Bronwen’s mistake was in sleeping too much after creating a design that was too ambitious.

I used to watch everything on HGTV, now it is the Food Network. Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and Chopped are great shows. I haven’t given up HGTV, but I watch more Food Network. Get ready to watch “The Next Food Network Star”…coming in June. I never in a million years thought that I would be interested in any fashion or modeling shows, but I watch ANTM, Super Model, Project Runway, What Not to Wear and on and on…

  • Kristina

I love these shows too! I was totally pulling for Bronwen as well – her cakes are AMAZING, and she’s hilarious to boot.
I just keep waiting for someone to go off on Kerry Vincent – girlfriend needs to remove the stick from her behind.

i’m the same way! i found myself admitting that and food network challenge where cake is involved is my FAVORITE thing to watch on TV… it consistently keeps me entertained and satisfied… i just wish there weren’t so few new episodes; i LOVED last cake standing, but now that it’s over i’m gonna hate the reruns!!!

  • Sue

I’m glad Mary won b/c I loved her artist ability, but I totally thought Courtney was gonna take it b/c her cake was so clean.
    PS…tell Duff I said Hi!

It’s ‘roll out a product called “fondant”‘ not ‘role out’ Seriously EW, do you not have ANY editors??
