'American Idol' Power List: We're down to five -- now vote for your fave!

Categories: American Idol 2009

Idolpowerlist_l5. Allison Iraheta: (Last week: No. 3) Simon has finally warmed to her — did we hear him say "brilliant" after her slowed-down, ass-kicking take on "Hot Stuff"? — but to date, America has not followed suit, as evidenced by her third bottom-three appearance in the last six weeks. Needs to take Paula’s tip from early in the finals and show a softer shade of her raspy instrument if she wants viewers to take a second look. Perhaps a softer, more glamorous look for Rat Pack week, and a little more focus on enunciation, would pay dividends, too?

4. Danny Gokey: (Last week: No. 4) Simon seems to be slipping off his bandwagon, noting his karaoke take on "September" had no star quality just a week after criticizing his harp-led arrangement of "Endless Love." Unlike Adam, Kris, Allison, and even Matt, Danny has yet to deliver a thoroughly original arrangement during the season 8 finals — something that seems more of a requirement in the New Idol Order. Needs to deliver a stellar, breakout performance if he’s going to make good on Paula’s "See you in the finals!" prediction, not to mention avoid a shock elimination this week.

3. Matt Giraud: (Last week: No. 5) Remember last season, how we all thought Syesha was going to finish eighth, then seventh, then sixth, then fifth, then fourth…and yet she made it all the way to third? And wouldn’t it be fair to say Matt is infinitely more likable and original than Ms. Mercado? Plus, if Matt gets booted, who will fulfill Kara’s flirtational fantasies? Weird things can happen at this stage of the Idol game, and Rat Pack Week may benefit Matt more than any of his competitors. We just hope dude dials back a bit on the excessive runs and falsetto. They’re 1-800-Not-Needed.

2. Adam Lambert: (Last week: No. 1) Hasn’t had a single bad (or even middling) performance in seven weeks of the season 8 finals — something none of his competitors can boast! — and his "Mad World" and "Tracks of My Tears" have arguably been the season’s most gripping performances. Biggest challenge for Glambert, in fact, is that he’s set the bar so high with his unbridled theatricality and manic energy, that anything less than a show-stopper can seem like something of a let-down. The crown is still his to lose, but if there was ever a week for a switcheroo at the top of the Idol Power List, you’ve got to admit it’d have to follow his slightly sleepy "If I Can’t Have You."

1. Kris Allen: (Last week: No. 2) He’s delivered back-to-back powerhouse performances with the unexpected and heartfelt choice of "Falling Slowly" on Movie Night and the brilliantly rearranged "She Works Hard for the Money" during Disco Week. True, his understated vocal style never makes the judges go wild, and yes, we haven’t quite forgotten that bunky "All She Wants to Do Is Dance," but he’s turned a one-horse race into something a little more interesting, and for that, he gets this week’s top spot.

A shock elimination for Danny? You guys are funny.

  • Adam

Adam is definitely #1. Chris #2…then Matt in last place.

Come on people, let’s put the GO in GOKEY this week. We can make it happen.

  • Dave

Kris is going to come from behind and surprise all you people!
Put the GO in GOkey this week!

  • Jen

I’m all for Matt lasting as long as possible. I’d take 3rd for him but here’s to hoping he defies the odds and makes it all the way! The guy is extremely talented. He can sing, dance, and play a killer piano. Definetly IMO the most talented Idol this season!

  • terri

Great to see Kris at number 1 even though Adam fans will deluge the voting. Still – nice to see him there for a while anyway.

  • Ford

Ahh…Sleazy{OOPS!Sleazak}you know you are a desperate Idol-head when you realize that Allison, whom you not so subtley try to force down our throats,is not going to win and jump on the roomy Kris bandwagon. He is good and should be 3rd.Allison should be second. But fess up!You haven’t liked Adam since day one!You should support him on the fact that you both are gay alone. Then remember, this is a SINGING competition! The best voice is Adam,PERIOD!Wake up,Sleazy!!!!

  • DrDolly

I’d switch your 1 and 2, then it would be perfect. I know Adam’s had the number 1 spot 4 weeks running, but no need to take it away from him for two awesome performances in light of Adam’s 7. You said it yourself, he hasn’t been bad, or even middling. Kris has been both.
In terms of actual POWER, I still think Adam belongs at the top. He’s going to have to suck in a major way, and I do mean coming out and doing the Macarena this week or something, for Kris to have more than a fair outside chance at beating him. I absolutely love Kris, I could go on about it for years, but he wasn’t better than Adam this week, or any other week (except Ain’t No Sunshine and possibly Falling Slowly – well, that blows a hole in that theory…)
I do appreciate that you gave your princess her deserved last spot, I know that was probably harder than it is for me to see Adam at No.2. Almost.

  • AIfan

Jeez… a very, very imaginative power list.
I knew it, Allison was just a cover-up and Slezak’s idol from the very beginning is Kris — can’t blame him, the guy is cute and kind of sexy.
JUST REMEMBER: Any power list that does not have Adam Lambert in Number One is definitely not reliable!!!

  • jcc

These ranking are meaningless. Adam Lambert has 6 of the top 10 Itune download including #1 and #2. Kris is far behind. Additionally, Google reported March Search for Adam is 6 million hits and Kris had less than 100K hits.

  • Meleegi

SO HAPPY you finally gave the top spot to Kris!! I can’t believe YOU would put Allison in 5th! You should at least swap her and Danny.

  • Dave

Hey Michael! If I were you I would prepare for an infestation of Lambert fantards coming in here to criticize you. Should be entertaining. =)
    Go Kris!

  • suebrody

How the hell is Kris ahead of Adam? And your pimped but worthy girl Allison is #5? What show is America watching, anyway?!
Adam fans, WHERE ARE YOU?! Pick up the phone and vote tomorrow. C’mon, now.
And put the GO in GOAKY.

  • nervz

Pleasssssssse people! For the love of God, do the right thing and eliminate Matt once and for all!!! It’s obvious that’s what the people want, judging by his 3!!! eliminations already! He has no more lifelines. Please, please, please, end him this week!!!

  • ana

    Adam <3

  • AB

Wow! It’s pretty amazing to see your poll reflect your #1 and #2! Yea Kris! I’m a big Kris fan, and his style appeals to me more than Adam’s. But I think Adam probably will and should win it. It would be sad to see Kris win and have to crank out an album as fast as David Cook did, knowing it would be so much better if they had a little more time. Adam could crank something out pretty quickly as his style is polished. Kris is more thoughtful and would need time to “create.” But, I would be pretty happy for him if he beat Adam out! They both have given some pretty amazing and touching performances.

  • suebrody

Adam fantard here, loud and proud.
Dave, perhaps you would be happier at VFTW.

  • carol522

Switch #1 & #2 and then you’ll have the correct order. As a matter of fact, you really need to put space between Adam (1) and Kris (2) because its not even close. Remove the blinders Slezak.

  • mb

no! i don’t want to see Kris at #1! that would mean he’d be too busy with press to come out and meet his fans on tour, waaaahhhhh. part of me wants him to come in 4th so he can do his press junket and get his own deal. but oh well…go kris!

  • Andrea

Kris deserves it! If you think about it, Kris is a combination of all the past Idol winners, yet he’s completely different than all of them at the same time. He’s mega-talented and great to listen to and watch, and he’s always very genuine when he performs! Go KRIS!!!

  • monica

No Way, I’m not convinced! Yes, Kris is getting better every week, but he doesn’t show star power and his vocal ability can’t come close to Adam…
If there is any justice in this world, Adam Lambert should be the next American Idol Hands Down!

  • MNW

matt giraud sucks he should have been gone along time ago the judges made a mistake by saving is sorry butt syesha is way more talented and likable than that copycat matt is nothing but a poor woman’s justin timberlake

  • AC

I know that these polls are very un-scientific but I’d like to believe that they have some kind of accuracy! In all of them, I see Adam and Kris as 1-2 and I really want them both in the finale! Yes, we all know that Adam will win but wouldn’t it be more interesting with Kris in there to see them both drastically change up their songs? That way, Kris is also guaranteed an album to be released as runner up. Go Kris!

  • momma bear

Slezak, you are on crack if you think Adam is not at #1…he is burning up google, itunes, the internet, no one can stop talking about him, and his performances have been great…kris is a worthy #2 (waayy better than gokey), but you have lost your mind putting him #1

  • Stephanie

Slezak, you must be blind! The only person left in the final 5 with the best chance of being a superstar is Adam. Nobody in the history of AI has blown me away week after week like he has – he has dreamed of this ever since the series began. Sob stories and geographical affiliations won’t win you the AI title, consistency, versatility and “it factor” will. Take the blinders off and get with the program – Adam is the true shining star of season 8

  • Glenda

Kriss ahead of Adam?! What you say? Adam ppl–for gawd sakes VOTE and make this article moot. I’ll print it out and burn it.

  • HootieDean

Am I the only one who doesn’t want Adam to win? Yes he is talented, sexy and wonderfully unique but if he wins, his album (most likely) won’t be any of those things. Let him come in at #2 so he can have a real career and an incredible album!

  • Mitchie

KRIS AHEAD OF ADAM WHAT THE HECK ARE U DEATH/BLIND!!!!
