Paula Abdul on 'Nightline': 'I've never been drunk'

Tomorrow night, Paula Abdul will appear on ABC’s Nightline. And you know what that means, PopWatchers! That means it’s time to revisit that old chestnut of a Paula question: Has she ever abused prescription drugs or been drunk on the air? That oldie-but-goodie was a hot topic back in 2007, when the Idol judge appeared on a morning show slurring her words and acting all loop-de-loopy. And we saw much of the same behavior on her short-lived Bravo reality series, Hey Paula (which I totally watched, albeit often with a hand over my eyes. There’s only so much trainwreck a girl can take — even a cynical one like me! Check out a clip below.) Of course, in this latest interview, Nightline’s Cynthia McFadden wastes no asking Abdul to straight up, now, tell her is she had a Rx or alkie problem.

An excerpt from tomorrow’s interview:

McFadden: "So let me just ask you the question straight up, absolutely crystalclear: you have not abused prescription drugs?"

Abdul: "Never."

McFadden: “You have not consumed alcohol before going on the air?”

Abdul: "Never. I’ve never been drunk in my life. I don’t like it. It’s not my thing. Spending money on clothes and shoes, that’s another thing."

Given some of Paula’s infamous on-air behavior, take a moment to contemplate that exchange, and then let us know if you’ll be watching the interview tomorrow and whether you’re kind of sick of the questions about her drug and booze abuse.

Does anyone else notice that when asked if she is ever intoxicated she only replies in connection to alcohol or illegal drugs… She never clarifies as to LEGAL drugs?????

And Bill Clinton never had sexual relations with that woman…

I am sick of the questions, because no matter how often they’re asked no one’s going to believe her answers. But all of the loop-de-loopy is what makes Paula kind of endearing, actually. I can’t help but root for her.

To quote Rod (or was it Todd?) Flanders, “Lies make Baby Jesus cry.”

I think her meds (probably legal) have been adjusted, or she stopped abusing them. Either way, there’s something off about her behavior. Of course she’s going to deny it. It’s part of addictive behavior to not see or acknowlege what’s obvious to everyone else. Paula’s cool, but something is not working for her. Because if she’s totally clean, what explains the drunken/druggie behavior? And the sleep-depravation excuse doesn’t cut it. Her use/lack of use of drugs is going to be an issue as long as her behavior matches that of an abuser.

Just remember, Paris Hilton also told Larry King she never did coke.
    Snort.

She says she’s never been drunk but then says she doesn’t like being drunk, so which is it?

Hard to understand why people continually pick on this poor woman who is about as nice and caring as they come and would never do harm to anyone. Shows what a crappy world we live in. The poor girl suffers from Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, a very painful and difficult-to-treat condition. Despite that, she has continued to work hard to support herself and takes on many rigorous projects. Most people with this syndrome are on full disability. She takes pain medications occasionally, but has repeatedly said she NEVER takes it prior to a show.
People should think long and hard before they make judgements about things they know nothing about.
Good for you, Paula! You keep on keepin’ on!

How does she know if she doesn’t like being/getting drunk if she’s never been drunk before?!

  • Wojo

Next thing you know she’ll be claiming that kids from the late 80s didn’t love Xuxa. Lies…horrible, horrible lies.

  • Adam

But will she pull an A-Rod and she was young, naive and stupid?

McFadden better follow up that exchange with the following question: “Then how do you explain this behavior?” (roll clips).
The only thing that will stop the drugs/booze questions is Paula’s clear answer to this question (even if we don’t believe her).

“Simon Sez” “Oh, Paula, Come On Now!”

GINA is absolutely correct. What a great world we would all live in if everyone was as caring as Paula Abdul. We should all be so lucky. The show would really suffer without her.

Come on people give sweet Paula a break. She has a very painful disabling health problem. I suffer from a similar one and I know what that is like and just trying to cope with the pain can make you come across as being off. She is not a drunk or an addict. If she needs pain meds for her health it isn’t affecting her ability to function, rather it keeps her functional and yet even with pain meds you still fight pain and that is very hard to do is to fight constant 24/7 pain and sleep deprevation as a result of it. you go without adequate sleep and be in constant pain and see how you act. I speak from experience. Keep on going Paula I am behind you 100%!

It’s unfortunate that so many people feel the need to evaluate everyone else without knowing what they are talking about in the first place. People with chronic pain go through so much as it is. I also have rsd and the pain is unbelievable – the disease has been around forever but yet hardly anyone knows anything about it. I give Paula a lot of credit just to be able to function at all. Knowing her lifestyle with always being on the go with multiple diseases explains it all. As to fulfill all commitments in your daily schedule while being in so much pain but try and present yourself as if your not……… KOODOS TO HER! Everyone deserves making a living.
