'American Idol': What should the Top 7 sing for Disco Night?

Americanidoltop7_lPrepare for some couch-dancing, Idoloonies! That is, if things go well on tonight’s disco-themed performance episode of American Idol. Of course, if the top 7 are stupefyingly uncreative –  or limited to the same tiny list of songs the Idol producers seem destined to hear on the show over and over and over — then we’ll be hearing three Donna Summer tunes, three tracks off the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, and Danny Gokey’s cover of "Grease."  And I’ll be dialing 1-800-Head-in-the-Oven! But why choose pessimism when blinding, delusional optimism can keep a spring in your step till Ryan Seacrest gets all up in your face come 8 p.m. EDT? Here’s my Disco Night request list for the remaining finalists. Ch-ch-ch-ch-check it out, then post picks of your own in the comments section below.

Adam Lambert: Sylvester’s "Do You Wanna Funk" or Musique’s "In the Bush"
Allison Iraheta: Indeep’s "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" or Loleatta Holloway’s "Runaway"
Anoop Desai: KC and the Sunshine Band’s "Keep It Comin’ Love" or France Joli’s "Come to Me"
Danny Gokey: Cheryl Lynn’s "Got to Be Real" or Patrick Hernandez’s "Born to Be Alive"
Kris Allen: Andrea True Connection’s "More More More" or Odyssey’s "Native New Yorker"
Lil Rounds: First Choice’s "Let No Man Put Asunder" or Alicia Bridges’ "I Love the Nightlife (Disco ‘Round)"
Matt Giraud: The Gap Band’s "You Dropped a Bomb on Me" or Machine’s "There But for the Grace of God Go I"

Tonight will be a train-wreck. Disco night? Really? Well at least all four judges will get to talk this week.

Uh, I thought about “More More More” and “Native New Yorker” but Kris is the LAST one of this group I would expect to sing either of these songs!
ADAM – “Get Down Tonight” (KC & the Sunshine Band)
KRIS – “Love Is In The Air” (John Paul Young)
ALLISON – “If I Can’t Have You” (Yvonne Elliman)
MATT – “September” (Earth Wind and Fire)
LIL – “I Don’t Want to Lose Your Love” (The Emotions)
ANOOP – “You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine” (Lou Rawls)
HOKEY POKEY – “I Just Want to Be Your Everything” (Andy Gibb)

Remember, Michael, these are 866 numbers, not 800 numbers.

  • crispy

    Disco sucks.

  • Sean

Great choice for Allison. Last Night A DJ Saved My Life is a great song!

  • JEK

    It’s 1-866-Head-in-the-oven.

Not to mention the outfits tonight will be horrible. Ughh. I’ll watch but I know it’s going to be super cheesy.

Oh my, Slezak are you insane? Adam Lambert doing Musique’s “In the Bush”?? Do you really think PG-rated American Idol is going to let Adam “Push push in the bush!” (Though it would be hilarious) Lambert should pull a high drama move like Donna Summer’s “MacArthur Park”.

  • cranky

    Why disco? Why Why Why???

  • Hi Michael H

Nice list but is Lou Rawl’s “You’ll Never Find considered a disco song? Same thing with “Love is in the Air”.

  • Jeff F

So how many train wrecks do you think we will see tonight, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6? Or maybe even seven. My bet is 4.

  • Kelly

Adam has to sing You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real). With that range and those swiveling hips… it would be fab!

  • Jeff F

PS, my comments on based on it being Disco night and not on the Constestant who are very talented.

  • Kim

god, I hate it when Slezak does this request column. No one EVER performs the songs he (or any blogger) suggests, and most that Slezak suggested no one has heard of. Face it, it will be Donna Summer, Bee Gees and Thelma Houston night. Ugh.

  • to Michael H

Love Is In The Air, is a 70′s pop song, as is Lou Rawl’s song. You are mixing up 70′s theme with disco. Unfortunately disco consists of a catchy synthesized beat with ZERO vocal range.
