Track it. I really don’t care about big brother because I’m not doing anything illegal. I much prefer shows I love like CHUCK CHUCK CHUCK CHUCK!!! not get cancelled.
    Chuck.
    That is all.
    Chuck.

I wouldn’t mind my Tivo tracking viewings at all. Like many comments I read, I’m willing to do that to save shows that get continually canceled due to a dead Neilson’s system. And no, I don’t know ANYONE that’s been a neilson’s family. (Any most of my friends and fam have Dvrs and watch a lot of tv.) It seems like maybe, they only care about viewers obsessed with American Idol and Dancing with the starts not quality shows like Pushing Daisies, or Chuck.
If Tivo wants my info, I’ll be the first to sign up to help!

The Neilsens are broken. Anyone who still makes major decisions according to them is a moron.

I have no problem with them recording, sending, or analyzing my viewing. Hell, they can take a billboard out if they want…If it would help some shows stay around, and get a more accurate recording of who’s really watching what…I’m all for it. And like so many before me have said – I’ve never met ANYONE who was a NielsenFamily.

We are a Nielsen family, have been for about 9 months, yes we do exist! Although I question how accurate it is since we tend to watch shows on DVR that are more than 7 days old and Nielsen does not count it in their statistics over 7 days. So not sure how accurate the ratings are, but we like to think we had a small hand in getting Friday Night Lights a two season pick-up.

This issue will not go away until the networks somehow find a way to make money via TiVo, DVR and torrent feeds. Until then, if you are not watching your favorite show live, you may be hurting its chance to survive another season: sad, but true.
Any improvement to the way viewership numbers are gathered might be of some interest to a network. However, TV is a business. In the final analysis, a network’s primary focus is how additional revenues can be generated through the use of any measuring technique – if its worth can be proved, it will be used – welcome to reality TV, in the true sense of the word !

Since the networks are always basing their shows on ratings, I do not mind that my recording/watching information is collected anonymously. Shows I really like have often been canceled. As the article points out–who are these Nielson families? I have never met one.
I record almost everything I watch because I like to schedule viewing into my own convenient time.
Now that more and more options are becoming available for watching TV shows, I am considering not even having cable, just broadband Internet. I am able to transfer video to my TiVo from many sources online. I am also a Netflix fan.
